I'm currently doing a project where I look at old Coliseum Video releases of WWF PPV events from 1985 to 1997. And I've noticed a lot of differences that one would find on the Coliseum Video releases of the PPV that you won't find on the WWE Network versions of the same events. Now granted, on a few of these videos the Coliseum Video version has cut out promos, even trimmed down matches, and even left out whole matches. But there are some things about the Coliseum Video version of the PPV that do include content that you may find interesting.
1. I'll state the obvious beginnings and endings like on any VHS. Distributed by Coliseum Video logo. Early 90's releases would include an ad in the event center by Mean Gene Okerland or Sean Mooney promoting a new WWF Coliseum Video release like a Supertape or Rampage or World Tour release. 1989 releases would include "Be A Survivor, Don't Smoke" PSAs by WWF Superstars. Also a set of commercials for WWF Hasbro Action Figures. One thing that the WWE Network version cuts out of some but leaves on others, what they all remain on the Coliseum Video version is the WWF intro logos like the starry sky or the rocky landscape, etc. At the end of the tape from the 90's there would be a Coliseum Video P.O. Box address. Later releases would include "Strategy Tips" for Acclaim video games. Not necessarily the most important things missing from PPV's but I thought I'd bring them up.
2. During the event itself, they would include "Coliseum Video Exclusive Content" like promos that aren't included on the WWE Network version or highlights from Fan Festival events in buildup for the PPV.
3. Here's an obvious one, entrance music. The Coliseum Video versions still have the original music used for the entrances for WWF Superstars like Don Muraco, Ken Patera, Hillbilly Jim/The Godwinns, and Ravishing Rick Rude. WWE Network uploads however have different music for them and sometimes it blocks out announcing.
4. Unfortunately on the WWE Network uploads, some parts of PPVs still have either the letter "F" in "WWF" muted or they just mute out any uttering of "WWF" or even whole sentences that say "WWF". Though other times in the same event, the "WWF" is completely restored like when you see someone say "WWF". It's pretty glaring and doesn't make sense. Maybe the staff just got lazy and forgot to finish unmuting. I noticed these missing utterances of "WWF" when I watched both the Coliseum Video version and the WWE Network version at the same time.
5. During the New Generation PPV uploads on the WWE Network, for some intro packages, they dubbed over the original narration that was done by either Todd Pettengill or the NBA on NBC announcer (Don't know his name) with the Attitude Era-Ruthless Aggression Era announcer. I don't get it. Why do that?
Those are the things that I like better about the Coliseum Video releases of PPVs as opposed to the WWE Network versions. What are your thoughts on this?
