TOKYO—Convincing consumers to trade in bulky old-school televisions for slim, high-definition models was a huge success story for the TV industry. Now manufacturers are angling to kick off another buying spree.

They are gearing up to promote what the industry calls "ultra high-definition" televisions, or UHDTVs, which promise four times the resolution of existing TVs and are likely to be a hot topic at next week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

Such TVs create images using more than eight million pixels, compared with about two million pixels of today's full high-definition televisions. At the moment, however, a major obstacle stands between consumers and sharper pictures: price.

The stratospheric price tags—often the case with new technology—don't worry some industry watchers, who recall that HDTV sets, cellphones and other products were initially out of reach of most consumers but became hits as prices declined.

1080p TV's are nearly as sharp as computer monitors at this point (which you sit less than three feet away from). How much sharper can an image get when you're in the double digits in feet away from the screen? This could only really be beneficial with very large TV's which already carry a tremendous price tag. Diminishing returns will occur very rapidly.
Shitty big screens used to cost like 10,000 bucks, now a 1080p 50 something inch TV costs like 800 bucks at Sam's. It's all in retrospect.

...and not even that many people with HDTV's have 1080p.

I got lucky and bought my mates dead Nans 1080p TV for £20. She was super awesome though, so it's ok.

Next up is Super Ultra Mega HD.
:lmao

How about getting rid of the multitude of problems that plague LCD and plasma TVs now.

Then again OLED is supposed to be the solution.

I seem to have quoted two of your posts Striker!

OLED - is that that organic, living organism shit?

There's nothing wrong with the quality of TV, what they should be working on, is features for TVs. Make things faster, built in DVRs to TVs, entire walls in houses are TV screens(not TV screens the size of a wall, but actual walls that are TV screens) and stuff like that.

lol exactly. TV is HD enough. It's getting to the point where any closeups are getting scary(in a bad way) to watch cause of how detailed you can see. Which really sucks when watching something like a sports game cause for some reason, the camermen always love doing audience shots for like 10 seconds on the same person, with real closeup shots.

Here's a fucking tip to everybody: Stick with the t.v that you've got because after a while any standard of picture starts to look mediocre. Save your fucking money and stop getting mugged off by these companies. I bet they have the technology to produce something that's four or five 'generations' ahead of the latest standard, they're just pacing themselves to milk you of your money.

Having said that, those top line hd tellys are rather nice.

We aren't going to see the 4k technology anytime soon yet we are barely transcending from 720p to 1080p. We don't even have the broadcasters yet its just not going to happen anytime soon. Also this will sky rocket T.V. prices. I don't really see the point of 4k, 1080p looks very nice already how much better can 4k do (unless for big T.Vs 80 inchs etc) the ones that should move to 4k are movie theaters there quality sucks lol.

I honestly can't imagine how the average or even rich person would benefit from this, aside from e-peen measurement.

It would be sweet for commercial or industrial use, but really, it's not like watching football on a regular TV sucks or anything.

I don't really know how more detailed a football game can get. I mean the upgrade from regular definition to HD was huge in the image qaulity for nfl( and sports in general). Do I really need to see each bead of sweat during :peyton 's post game interview?

I find it ironic how as technology keeps improving, namely TV picture quality and arrival of blu-ray, the quality of many Hollywood movies diminishes. What with overhyped franchises, shitty remakes, overuse of CGI and the moving away from shooting on film.

Same with popular music - so easy to buy music thesedays. Yet the billboard charts often consist of: crappy hiphop stars rapping about money and pussy; bubblegum elevator level music (Justin Bieber, One Direction); and third rate karaoke acts from Idol or X Factor.

That's funny because the quality of movies are actually increasing. I always laugh when people say movies were so much better before when they really weren't at all..

Check out the highest grossing movies of the 90s. Laughable.

Please tell me all this quality you are talking about. Today has much better quality movies. Hell, 2012 put on some of my favorite movies of all time.

And if mainstream is hip hop is all about girls and money, why is Kendrick Lamar 2nd on the list for most hip hop almbum sales in 2012.
