Lets be real...JR is really the worst. He used to be great, his time is over, he just needs to move on, and I am not saying that as a hater of the man, it's just my honest opinion.

People literally shitting on the guy for being a fan of the product and genuinely enthusiastic about seeing and having the opportunity to call the action, which he does well.

Sure he comes across as a dork sometimes, but that's what I want on commentary tbh. I want some virgin that knows all the moves to say their names, give me facts and hype them up. He's perfect in that role. He's also a great target for heels to come poke fun at his nerdiness and be the butt of jokes occasionally, which they do and it's usually hilarious.

He's one of the best announcers in the business at what he does, imo. He could probably lose the mask though, that part is a bit cringe.

They should take him off Rampage. The setup is really crowded and Taz can handle the play by play just fine.

I can't get around the mask either, it just looks stupid. I can't bare to watch video packages bigging up a match when he shows up, it just seems corny and I can't take it seriously. AEW might as well have someone cosplaying as their favourite DBZ character or even in a fursuit doing those 'serious' videos.

I don't have much good to say about NXT commentary. I've watch a clip here and there so look at possible signings and the commentary just sounds awful...

Excalibur has improves based on the fact AEW has signed some bigger names recently and he doesn't have to explain who they are as much. He thinks people care that he wrestled someone in a bingo hall a decade ago.

JR is fine. He's learnt the product and has a voice that stands out.

Schiavone is boring as fuck. His voice sounds small time and his feud with Cole and Baker is weird.

Schiavone’s voice has been on air since the early 1980s. He had radio jobs and didn’t follow wrestling for more than fifteen years after WCW was sold. Occasionally his voice will raise and he sounds exactly like he did when he was younger.

His appeal is that he was the voice of WCW during the NWO & Austin era. He was all over the place performance wise. To hear him now he sounds genuinely excited and interested in this generation of wrestling. He is a bit of a mentor for Britt. Cole is a jealous duck. I find it pretty amusing that he takes it out on 60something. father of many children. Yet Cole hates him. It’s actually a little subtle for pro wrestling.

JR has been a lot better the past few months. He hasn’t made any Freudian pro wrestling slip ups lately. It seemed like a far too regular occurrence before. He sounds tired and burned out. As long as he doesn’t mistake AEW for WWE again too many times he is productive and still an asset on commentary. Maybe he shouldn’t be asked to do the entire two hours on Wednesday. Hopefully he won’t get too grumpy when he has tocall something that upsets his pro wrestling sensibilities. He was doing it quite often last year.

Taz is a great colour commentator. Partnered with Excalibur and they are a great team. Whether they are being focused and serious on Wednesday and Friday or looser and more casual on Dark - they just compliment one another irregardless of their roles that evening.

Excalibur is great at what he does. I have most likely explained it in this thread or elsewhere. The fact that he wears a mask still warms my kucha loving heart. There are masks all over in lucha.

Announcers, officials and formal events will all show a proud luchadore wearing both his mask and a swanky suit. It just looks natural to me. If he takes the mask off people will just make fun of how he looks. They will do this not because he is ugly but simply because he dared show his face on television. That is one of the reasons I think he should never take it off.

The goofs will just rip on the poor guy’s actual face. Couple that with Corny’s misinformation campaign on all things AEW.

Until the loudest voice in the room is not trolling it will always be an uphill battle towards respect. When someone old and respected starts putting Excalibur over he will always be under the microscope by some nut job with ulterior motives and bad faith arguments. Excalibur is more afraid of them than they should be of him.

I don't think anyone cares about what a commentator looks like in 2022. He looks silly now and I'm sure he looks fine without the mask. Actually I had a look and he's a normal looking bloke? I don't get it.

Dynamite- Jim Ross, Taz, Excalibur (Unmasked under a real name)
Rampage- Mauro Ronallo, Chris Jericho, Tony Schiavone
Dark- Ian Riccaboni, Colt Cabana, Alex Mendez

If I was in charge I'd want some combination of this on my three shows. A main play by play, a colour commentator and another mix of a play by play and colour to cover or bounce off.

I just think people are mean. They will comment on his actual face because it exists online. Hopefully they prove me wrong.

I would try the WCW formula which for me was the best: 1. main play by play guy(has to have a good voice), 2. color commentator(usually former wrestler/manager) who can also add humour, 3. knowledgeably guy, specialist

Guys like Shiavonni, Ronallo, JR should always be the PBP guys. That is why JR-Tony don't work. Former wrestlers/managers like Lawler, Heenan, Jericho are colors, humour, knowledge as former talent. The knowledge guys, you have Tenay who is the model of that. You can say Excalibur can be color and knowledge but doesn't seem particularly funny. He should drop the mask, get a real name and be a new generation Tenay so to speak.

I would try Tony, JR and a new voice for the 3 PBP.

Jericho, Taz and Dan Lambert for the 3 colors.

Tenay, (formely known as) Excalibur and a wrestling journalist for the knowledge.

He's grown on me I have to say since starting. Part of that is you generally don't have to hear him say TOPE SUICIDA! every 5 minutes as thank god they now have the type of roster that doesn't do that every fucking match.

At least he gets excited which is something sorely lacking out of Tony and JR. They come off a bit disinterested sometimes and just a bit monotone when a big spot has happened that warrants more urgency from them.

Overall I think the commentary has gotten a lot better in recent times. They've done a great job of really putting over a guy like Danielson for example I've really noticed as well as their disgust over MJF. The only thing that is really missing on the Dynamite team is a heel colour guy. Why is that so hard to find in wrestling now?

Can't fucking stand him, he constantly has to show off his big brain of wrestling knowledge "Oh my its the sasquashian front flip plancha! first used by the great Uno Lamberta in 1991 in New Japan!" he just yells stupid unnecessary shit like that to show everyone he knows everything, and he comes off like a fucking mark virgin whos sat in a basement his entire life watching wrestling. He just has to add extra to every fucking move, like he can't just call a brain buster a brain buster, he's gotta call it something like "Its the sheer drop vertical brain planter".

And take the fucking mask off you fucking idiot, no one knows who the fuck you are, wears that fucking goofy mask as if he's Jushin Thunder Liger or Rey Mysterio, like people know him or something.... No one knows you mark, maybe the 5 people that watched your matches you had in a barn in Ohio somewhere do but no one else does.
The one pet peeve I have is ignorant comments like this. Excalibur had way over 5 matches he had 100s of matches. He didn't start wrestling in Ohio, he started in Santa Fe Springs California with the original Rev Pro. Most Ignorant fans think he started in PWG, dude had alot of good matches before PWG ever became something. While he is an average commentator there is a difference between passion and being a smart ass. The dude isn't racist either. His career came to an end from concussions like Corey Graves, the only difference between Graves and Excalibur is Graves doesn't have a bunch of haters that claim he is a shitty wrestler with ignorant ass comments like he is from Ohio. Super Dragon, Taro, Rising Son, Disco Machine, AWC, Matt Sinister, Excalibur all came from Rev Pro. Rev Pro was like what the velvet underground was to punk rock. They wernt a big promotion but extremely influential towards what southern California eventually became. I get it if you don't like his commentary but if your going to sit there and say he had 5 matches and is from Ohio you sound pretty Damm ignorant.

Excalibur is that you?!

In all seriousness though that's a spicy first post and I love it! Excalibur is awesome and gets way too much flak for the mask and even more ridiculously for actually being knowledgeable about the sport he's calling. Cool names give the moves more oomph and using the actual names gives them a sense of history in the larger context of the wider world of wrestling. I want my commentators to know more about wrestling than me.
