Who do you think is the best on the mic and why? CM Punk or The Rock?

The Rock, no question. Punks promos are only good when he's shooting or breaking the 4th wall.

The Rock by a thousand miles. He’s entertaining, can connect with the crowd, can cut serious and funny promos. He can cut traditional wrestling promos. Punk is not on his level. He’s become overrated because during his tenure there was an absence of great promo guys.

The Rock has vastly superior crowd control and catchphrases that leave an emphatic point rather than just spouted for the Character's sake, He can elicit emotion in any range to sell the story, When you peg him as just a funny punchline that's when you really shouldn't judge Mic Skills, There's a reason only Cena or Austin can remotely touch anything close to Rock's ability to garner the reaction all talker's need to get audiences invested in every word they say.

Punk is a Shoot artist and blends that with Kayfabe very well but despite that he's still got competition when holding a Mic, Jericho is a threat to him and is actually the slightly better of the two when working a traditional story oriented formula, Miz post New Era labelled draft(2016) has shown he can add passion to his Promos without sounding like another loudmouth Heel and by passion I mean his general presentation as a Character performer.

Before you place Punk near Rock think about how he overall stacks against those beneath Dwayne's level.

Both were great! I am going to say The Rock, although he was not as witty as he was made out to be. I had heard stories that the Rock relied on scripts more than he could come up with something clever on the spot. But he certainly knew how to deliver well and control an audience. Punk was just brutal with his insults (pipe bomb) which always got great pops from the audience.

Rock easily.

Punk promos only worked because of the shitty era that he was in. Most fans were so desperate for any kind of "let's shit on the company's PG approach" promo. If he went out there in the 70's, 80's, 90's, or even the early 00's, and cut that type of promos, nobody would've gave a crap, why? because the business was kinda in a better, and the IWC wasn't such a big deal.

Actually guys like Piper and Michaels used to break the 4th wall a lot of times, but they were more well rounded as talkers, that they didn't have to rely on that all the time just to get a reaction.

You could say the same about Rock and his catchphrases, but if you look back at his initial run, from 1997 to 2003, you could literally see the development in his promos/character in each year. 1998 Rock promos were completely different from 2003 Rock promos. You could say that his promos in this year was better than that year, but you couldn't deny that he's always been in the the top 2 mic workers list. Matter of fact, the reason he got over in the first place is because of his heel run with the nation,...he barely used any catchphrase during that time.

...but Punk, he was in the right place at the right time.

...and there is another thing, Rock could cut heel babyface promos and babyface promos. Can't say the same about Punk.

Punk is up there, dude used to obliterate Cena whos known for absolutely roasting the shit out of people. He was very witty and had an authenticness to him to the point where it didn't feel like he's playing a character. The Rock is the best I've seen though. He's ability to captivate an audience isn't matched by many.

Both are fantastic. Everyone here (putting down Punk, and only focusing on the 'pipebomb') conveniently forgot about Punk's fantastic heel promos (particularity against Jeff Hardy, later with the SES, etc.).

CM Punk is the more Well-rounded promo guy in terms of material, and articulate.

The rock is an articulate guy himself but most of his segments and promos consisted of catchphrases and stupid jokes but he's still excellent in many other ways- timing, delivery, crowd involvement. He was also brilliant as Hollywood heel in 2003.

This pretty much boils down to a Tie. They're both great talkers.

But The Rock is infinitely the better package in terms of look, size, speed, agility, athleticism and charisma.

This is what I thought as well. Punk was awesome in 2009-2010 as well. To say that he could only be great because he broke some fourth wall or that Pipebomb is laughable.
