Can we talk about the refs?

Shocked there hasn't been a post on this yet. How the HELL did we have 3 (or was it 4?) botches by the refs in the first few matches? I was 100% sold on it being a work and then...nothing. It's so rare to see a ref botch that so many in a short period of time must be so unlikely.

Re: Can we talk about the refs?

Remember when refs were known characters and part of the overall show?

Hebner, Lil Naitch, Korderas, Chioda, Nick Patrick etc.

Why do these stand out?

I wouldn't be able to tell you a single referee nowadays (Besides Drake Younger).

Chioda gave away a cash-in since he is the only ref I know these days and is always there for cash-ins.

I was convinced after the first 2 matches, that the ref ‘botches’ were an angle, and couldn’t fathom why the commentators weren’t linking them together. I thought maybe we’d get a heel referee stable, forming after years of being abused and assaulted.

Then I remembered that I was watching WWE.

I thought it was a work until there were no fuck ups during the last few matches. Now I just think the refs are idiots.

I was hoping it was part of a bigger storyline and was a way of protecting Lacey since they showed the botch on the replay and one of the announcers noted that she had Becky down for the 3 count.

Re: Can we talk about the refs?

They're probably second guessing themselves. They change the script so often and close to air time, I wouldn't be surprised if half these poor bastards didn't even know/remember the finish.

Dunno if this is still going on, but didn't refs get their pay docked for screwing up the count? These guys are probably shitting bricks the whole time

Re: Can we talk about the refs?

Besides the foot on the rope in the Shane match, I don't recall a ref botch. Even that was likely planned, since they went up to the top of the ropes right after. I think that's Shane & Miz who made the bad call. The ref saved the match yet sacrificed himself.

1) Samoa joe match looked like that was the planned finish, albeit early due to injury. That's why Joe left, got checked in the back, then came back out to destroy Rey.

2) Women's spot with the ref not counting. He was getting into position, and rightfully so for becky to transition into the disarm-her. I would say that's more of a delay into a planned spot.

I'll add, WWE refs are likely the best refs in professional wrestling. NJPW refs don't call anything and just stand there looking useless. ROH refs don't push any rules or they push all of them as planned, there is no between. Lucha Underground didn't even need refs. I'm really curious to see if AEW can keep up the quality of refs like WWE does.

Seth didn't kick out on the last AJ pin, the ref pulled up. Now I know Seth and others are told to kick out at two and a half to make more suspense and who wants to see a kick out at one? I don't call that a ref mistake, more of a Seth mistake.
I can only guess that Samoa Joe didn't know the match was ending, if WWE called the early ending for Joe's broken nose. I didn't see Becky's shoulders down for a 5 count, I didn't think it was even 3. It would go with her disputed pin of Rousey. Becky as a champion that hasn't won clean. I don't like that Graves is getting to point out the referee mistakes, but no payoff, makes him look dumb. I know Graves isn't getting in an altercation or getting the ring with a ref. Don't understand why Graves/Vince is pointing it out.

If it doesn't make money, it doesn't make sense.

This post is totally not trashing the refs. Them being so good a majority of the time is the reason I am even made this. It is so rare that seeing it in more then one instance was shocking. To the point where I expected a work..
