I'd look at this as a problem from this angle; if you normalise government control, it's easier to take away further liberties and individuality away each generation, or worse, with each new issue. Considering that the Chinese are already under social credit, you have to wonder how long it is until they begin to take on a Brave New World. If they are already beginning to make sure that children grow under certain influences and away from particular 'taboos', there'll be nothing there but a slave to the state. If the rest of the world feel they have to compete with China through economic means, we are looking at something far worse than Orwellianism.
I don't really dig the 'slippery slope' argument in most things but capitalism is one where the slippery slope will always occur as financials become more important than the human spirit to those who can push change.
