Re: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (March 22nd, 2019) - "its nothing like a souls game"

@Arya Dark @Dolorian @Vic @Black Metal @Sephiroth

So played Sekiro for the 1st time yesterday for a number of hours, first thoughts:

* The reviews stating that Sekiro is nothing like a souls game are pretty damn accurate. The combat is fast paced like Bloodborne but also requires a lot of precision and timing. There are also a lot more avenues to go about in terms of killing, it's much more diverse and different situations require different approaches. In many instances I felt like I had to be a lot more covert rather than just facing the enemies head on. Makes each encounter very intriguing and different.

* I absolutely adore the grappling hook and the amount of freedom you get to roam around the world. In Souls games, you were limited really to walking/running and using ladders, you couldn't really jump high or climb ledges let alone fly around like you do in Sekiro. This game completely flips the script on that which is a big reason why you can utilize different methods to kill enemies and get around the world. It's very liberating to say the least.

* Speaking of the world, thus far it's very beautiful in aesthetic and very sparse. Can't wait to explore and discover more. Hopefully the promise of Sekiro being one big world much like the original Dark Souls comes true. You have different merchants in different areas much like the original DS but also a hub much like later renditions, so it combines the two and thus far it works pretty well.

* I'm slowly getting used to the combat but it's going to take time, I was a slow learner for DS and it'll be the same probably here too. I've gotten used to the basics quicker simply because of the experience with previous FromSoftware games but I have a feeling it'll take me longer to master to a good degree.

* Breaking up the areas with mini bosses is an aspect I'm really enjoying as it makes getting through each area even more rewarding. Having said that, these mini bosses are TOUGH. I think for most of the mini bosses I've utilized stealth where I can (another aspect which is great in this game) to get them down to half health so it's easier to take them down because I'm still bad at deflecting and timing in this game. It took me a while to get through the ones I have, especially ones with other smaller enemies around them.

* The prosthetic tools thus far are cool as well as the skill tree. I've made use of a few of them and I've seen some really cool new moves that I've taken advantage of. Though I haven't gotten that far into customization because obviously I'm not that far into the game. Not missing the leveling system yet but I'll have to see later on.

* I believe I've gotten up to the first two main bosses now, I've seen one at least which I have not properly attempted yet but looks incredibly difficult and pretty unique. It'll be a tough learning curve. The other one I've gotten up to an area which looks like a main boss area where I've had to go through two mini bosses to reach so I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure that's a boss too. So getting through those two are going to be my challenges for today.

Thus far I'm loving it, there's other things I want to say but they are more big spoiler type things so I'll tag it under spoiler for those who wish to read at their peril .

Spoiler for Sekiro Spoilers!:

* The hardest mini boss thus far I think would be Juzou the Drunkard had their not been obvious ways to exploit the situation. If it were a straight up fight it would have been super super difficult and it still was despite using exploits. Thankfully you can take out the other enemies before properly engaging him as well as sneak up and get the first deathblow in like many mini bosses. Plus you have someone else to help you defeat him but even with all of that it's difficult.

* None of the mini bosses are easy but probably the least difficult thus far is the Chained Ogre simply because you can rely on old Souls like mechanics the most to get through the fight, the ogre has no weapon so you can't deflect. He's still super beefy though and you need the Flame Vent prosthetic tool to make it a little easier.

* In fact there are different prosthetic tools and skills you can get which really help make what seem like impossible mini boss fights a hell of a lot easier. One example is using the Mikiri Counter for the Shinobi Hunter. I would have not defeated him without that skill. Not to mention it's extremely useful for thrust attacks in general.

* The flashback utilized by the young bell charm leads to a fantastic area called Hirata Estate which both is great in design, has a wide array of enemies and thus far two pretty difficult mini bosses, one which I've already talked about. It is also very important in terms of plot, character development. Highly recommend going to that area when you can.

* My favourite part of the game thus far is the route from Underbridge Valley to Ashina Castle Gate Fortress where you have to sneak past and deal with a GIANT FUCKING SNAKE. I'm not joking when I tell you that it is perhaps the scariest experience I've gone through in a From game. The mechanics of sneaking round it, getting into position to do a deathblow and then running the fuck out of there before it rips you apart is absolutely heart racing, thrilling and terrifying at the same time. Brilliant.

* I've come across 4 prosthetic tools thus far. One is found early on, two are at the Hirata Estate (which is another reason to go!) and one I had to purchase from a vendor. So there are different ways to grab a hold of these, so keep an eye out. There are also different skills you can get to utilize them to their fullest effect which I've done for a few.

* The only aspect I don't like so far is the Dragonrot essence system and the restoration process. Getting the initial cure is easy to restore full unseen aid but afterwards it's extremely difficult to get a hold of. I can't get any more blood donations and I can't seem to find vendors that have the cure in stock. Thankfully I haven't had that many NPC's get the Dragonrot yet the 2nd time around but am a little concerned for later. I like the idea of balancing the resurrection aspect so it isn't two overpowered and you have to think about when to use it but sometimes you really have to or you are in such a close fight that it would be silly not to use it and the chances of an NPC catching the Dragonrot essence is very high, especially the 1st time it happens when you are on 30% Unseen Aid which immediately halves to 15% with the first NPC catching it. Good idea but bad in execution in my opinion.

That's cool, thanks for sharing your thoughts @Rolo Tomassi . I can't wait to get my hands on the game (hopefully this afternoon).

Looking forward to it.

Re: Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (March 22nd, 2019) - "its nothing like a souls game"

Put in a good amount of work in this game so far (beat first two majors bosses , just reached Tamoe Genishiro...have fun with that guys :P) .

Absolutely fantastic game, drawing influences from souls ofc, tenchu and reminds me a lot of a very technical soulsy version of Onimusha. The combat is by far it's greatest asset. As cliche as it sounds, the harder battles do very much feel like a dance, when every input matters. I found myself getting rocked alot of course, but when I was playing well, my god did it feel amazing to deflect and attack with such precision.

Big Pros: Beautiful graphics, great framerate, insane combat, grappling hook!

Few tips for beginners:

- Don't button mash, you will die. a lot.
- Sneak when there's a lot of enemies or draw them out, taking on multiple enemies will get you turned into sushi real quick
- Get the Mikiri counter skill ASAP and practice it. One of the best ways to do lots of posture damage on those nasty thrust skills. Once mastered, spear bros will give you no troubles again.
- Don't be scared to be aggressive and keep up your offense on bosses, you need to do sustained posture damage to get anywhere (a good mix of one slash, deflect/dodge, counter, repeat)
- Try and reduce bosses vitality bars if you can't seem to break their posture, this will make things easier.
- Upgrade your prosthetic early. I personally use the axe a lot (charge attack) and the shuriken for long distance
- SKILLS worth getting early/grinding for: mikiri counter, ascending/descending carp, Breath of Life: Light (cost 5, but you heal after each deathblow, THIS WILL SAVE YOU LOTS OF HEALING ITEMS)

I won't put location spoilers in this post since the game is so new, but you can PM me if you need early game tips, I'm doing pretty good so far and am happy to help out newer players.

I love this game but I suck at it. I managed to get to the Shinobi Hunter mini boss (which eventually will lead to Lady Butterfly) at the Hirata Estate. I could also start the descent past the Great Serpent. Not sure which route I wanna go.

I was atrocious on Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (basically only able to beat the game on easy with parry assist) with the parry so it’s no different on this game.

I’ll get as far in Sekiro as I can though!

I'm loving this game, I hope no one is playing this with English language on because boo on you . Just beat Gyoubu the Demon, surprisingly I only died maybe 5 or so times against him and my first time fighting him and getting the rhythm of the fight down wasn't even that tough. Either the boss was a little too easy or I'm actually improving as a player. Also fuck that fucking snake, I only died twice against it, but it can still eat an absolute dick because I hate snakes . I beat Lady Butterfly earlier and the only reason I kept dying was because of cheap bullshit and dumb mistakes by me. I'm having the same issue I did with Dark Souls/Bloodborne here where there's times when I just refuse to block and deflect even though it could make things a hell of a lot easier for me.

If anyone wants to watch a playthrough from someone I absolutely adore as they are playing then I highly recommend Alaska. I fell in love *not literally* with her while watching her play Dark Souls 3. She's just fun to watch and listen to. I highly suggest you don't watch anything past where you are currently in the game though. Don't spoil things.

After spending several hours with the game I just realized how to retrieve coins like an idiot. There's no button prompt in-game to remind you and I skipped the tutorial that told you how. Seems kind of stupid not having coins just come to you like the spirit shit.
