Re: Destiny 2
After reading ab it more about Shadowkeep, I think I have altered my stance on it somewhat. Right now other than excruciating grind for the sake of grind, there isn't a lot of meaningful reasons to play Destiny 2 once you finish your weekly reset. This Battle Pass system reasonably gives you a reason to play longer after the weekly reset is done, as you have this overarching loot goal. A loot goal without RNG or hoops, just a transparent, XP requiring system. That has to be considered a good thing.
I still think there are so many aspects about Shadowkeep that sound either problematic or a full regression and I will be intrigued by what this premium/free dynamic does to the playerbase but I am also not opposed to getting a lot of content up front just for paying. I guess you could argue it could be seen as the start of a potentially slippery slope where Bungie give you the option to skip the grind with real world money, but we are not there. Yet.
I get that the vanilla approach to just hand you everything was damaging long term, but the complete 180 they've done on this approach feels just as harmful. Exotic drop rates have seemingly dropped through the floor, I've been back for a few weeks, I've had maybe two or three drop from doing powerful activities but absolutely none drop from the wild or from prime engrams. At least one was a duplicate, too. It also seems they have changed the system, so basically any exotic worth having drops from exotic quests, not from random drops.
Speaking of those quests, I currently have I think five or six exotic quests I am working on, but all are structured in pretty much the same miserable way. One quest step will require you to put more time into it than any working adult has spare, before the next step turns into pure, brutal, sadism. You then repeat this cycle seven and eight times and your result is either a full blown nervous breakdown or a new exotic weapon, or both. You can never complete these exotic quests by just playing the game, you always have to play them in very specific, very tedious, very frustrating ways that usually force you to fight against the way the mechanics of certain things work.
Like it is bad enough that Destiny 2 rams PVP into PVEcentric weapon quests, but it will also require you to use a shit weapon, get very specific kills, probably have a huge punishment for death and require you to not get 10, or even a 100 kills, but probably something closer to like 500 kills. This means you aren't playing for anyone else but yourself and you're gonna cheese and bend the mechanics for every advantage you can get and if you've got several players all doing the same thing, you're dragging down the entire quality of the mode as no one will be playing the game as it is intended to be played, no one is playing to win or playing selflessly. This goes exactly the same for Gambit quests which have very similar mechanics.
Even when it does include a PVE section, they usually ramp up the difficulty so ludicrously it is still unfeasible. Oh yeah, everything can now one shot you, there is no matchmaking, you get no revives, it is timed and if you die you go to orbit. K THKZ.
I just think it really fucking sucks that content I have paid for is potentially forever locked away from me, so if I choose the premium option and I get exotics and legendaries with no barriers up front, just for paying, I am sorry but I am fine with that. Obviously I'd much rather these exotic quests were actually fun and more reasonably achievable instead, but this is the next best thing until or if it turns into a pay to skip grind system.
I also talking about wrestling on my Twitter if you want to follow me or whatever...
