My horror binges tend to be short sadly... too much reliance on gore and cheap jump scares for my tastes. But I hit a good 7 or 8 terrorising films every october, sometimes get a few extra in.

Frailty - for both subtle horror and just a damn good story

Alien and Aliens - the only two Alien films.

Terminator - I don’t know why this isn’t universally noted as horror. It keeps coming! Nightmare feul.

Silent Hill - first movie and about 5 games to binge. Still get unnerved at every siren.

Devil - Something about it... good tension, claustraphobic, great story.

Ninth Gate - more thriller with a dash of horror, but it unnerves me.

Saw - only the first, and onlt because I first saw it on Halloween. Much more than horror. Then the franchise cratered.

Pitch Black - yeah... nightmare fuel.

American Werewolf - terror of losing control. Always works.

Goosebumps/AYAotD - tame in some episodes, but damn if some don’t work.

The Thing - the horror film. It should be law to watch this film every October. The pinnacl of horror. (Though, in honour of true soul crippling horror, the only real law should be to watch Gigli on the 31st... maybe I’m kidding. Maybe.)

I forgot one!

Stay - rivetting and the way it creates the “what the...” moments is astounding. Under appreciated gem, partly for a non horror ending and partly because it speaks to true helplessness. That is true horror.

So far, my scary movie watch list for October has been:

Jigsaw
The Predator
Deliver Us From Evil
Hold The Dark
Nightbreed
Insidious
Malevolant
Veronica
Creep 2

I try to keep to stuff I haven't seen before for the most part, but I will certainly be rewatching a couple of favourites, in honour of the witching season ...

Alien
Jaws
Predator
The Exorcist
A Tale Of Two Sisters

You can actually keep up with my progress on "letterboxd". Username is greasykid1.

Today's movie is probably going to be Raw (2016)

Based on the comments, I went for Terrifier today rather than Raw.

I have to say ... it's fairly average. I mean, the effects are great and the portrayal of Art the Clown is fantastic. But it is really not scary in the slightest. Gory, yes. But I'm not getting *frightened* of fake blood. It echoes all the great slasher flicks of the 80s, with the creepy killer and the electronic soundtrack - plus the generic teenagers in trouble, but it seemed like all the writer had was a list of cool ways to be killed in a movie and he went from one to the next with no story or suspense.

Well, I guess it's appealing to the torture porn market rather than actual horror, and it does the torture porn nicely. I just can't be "disturbed" by the fx, no matter how good, if I haven't been given a reason to care whether the characters live or die.

Gets a perfectly OK *** from me :)

Who's the dense fuck who said "torture porn" once and it caught on to join up with people who already use faux terms that don't mean anything - and won't ever - like "so bad, it's good" or "guilty pleasure"?

I'd so totally throw my pen at them.

Throwing pens is cathartic as hell. Especially when aimed at those with bad taste.

Watched Christine last night. Screw any SHITTER who doesn't enjoy this.

Going to finish the Dead trilogy tonight. Bonus points to anyone who can guess which one my favourite is out of the last two.

Frailty - for both subtle horror and just a damn good story

:banderas Frailty rules.

I agree 100% Cameron has even mentioned Halloween as an influence, and one can see that Jason and Micheal and all became Terminator-y after this classic came out.

October 10- Apartment 1303 (Asian remake) wish Upon is a remake of a Philipines' movie, and this one is from a Japanese film. Gotta say I'm confident the original is way better as this one is just awful. 1st half is starndar ghost stuff and then it ends up feeling like a big waste, then the second half is just a bad. A big let down. Actually stopped and had to finish the following day.

October 11- When Lights Went Out (haunted place) Based on a "true story" of a poltergeist case in England, which is not as famous as Enfield one but has some similarities... the parents are somewhat unsympathetic (the dad saw it as an opportunity to make money, so it was meta to an extent) as was the priest while the ghost hunters was very little time on screen. Was OK for the most part but the ending just wasn't excitng at all, there are better Paranormal Witness episodes out there.

I watched Terrifier, seems like the thing to do.

This is without a shadow of a doubt one of if not the most brutal, mean and sadistic slashers I've ever seen, but it's also an absolutely fun ride. Seriously, Art is up there with the most genuinely scary horror creations. He's a funny guy though. Definitely not above some slapstick every now and again.

Insanely well directed horror movie though, and the low budget just feels perfect. Grimy and dark. How this even exists at this point in time is amazing in and of itself. While most modern horror is fascinated with allegory's, metaphor, grief and loss etc (I'm not saying this is inherently a bad thing btw), this is a pure exercise in no holds barred slasher carnage. That might even be underselling it though, because this is genuinely terrifying for a lot of it.

FUCK Art sitting in the fast food place like it's nothing. Trying to keep me up for weeks or what?

Allegory goes and dies, and only thing left is the clown killing EVERYBODY. :mark:

Kept the clown goodness going with Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Set-design and effects alone it's great. But the fact that it's 83 minutes of just alien clown anarchy the whole way makes me love it. It's a blast and still feels dark enough to see these kill people with cotton candy, various temptations of entertainment (because apparently little towns are starved for carnival fun), and all kinds of prank-minded, but deadly attributes. The 50's Sci-Fi riffing in the middle of a distinctly 80's setting was on point. Reminds me of The Blob remake in a way with that. Only, this certainly stands out on its own. How could it not? Giant, colorful clowns are throwing pies at people and they're melting. This was a goooood time.

I agree with the sentiment 100%. I only used the term in my Terrifier review because that IS the accepted term for movies that are full of gore but devoid of scares.

I use it basically as an insult rather than a classification or sub-genre. :)

I went to watch Blood & Black Lace on youtube only to find out 45 minutes in I was watching a movie called Blood & Lace. Wound up enjoying anyway! Ending was pretty great because they hit me with a twist I thought was obvious, only to hit me with one I hadn't even considered. Guess I'll have to find a download for Blood & Black Lace. Watching Saw now instead, never seen any of them.

Blood & Black Lace is the best.

Finally saw Bird With The Crystal Plumage. It's fantastic. Maybe Argento's best most streamlined mystery. Very Hitch.

Watched the first two Species films. Because I caught aspects of both in the past on cable and never saw them in full, except for the sex bits. But they're so all about sex, it was easy to see why I kept only seeing those parts each time I randomly flipped to the channel.

The original is trash & boring nonsense, but the sequel is kind of a solid B-movie Horror, if largely thanks due to having great effects. I'm talking some cool pulsating pods and exploding pregnant bellies all over this. I might like this more than I lead on, but I'll wait in the future to figure that out. It's very Lifeforce-lite, so I know that's driving some interest home. Point blank, effects ruled and if SPECIES II can have them, why can't more out there? /tiresome complaint

Lowkey mind-blown knowing H.R. Giger created the model for Sil.

Foiled again on the Bava. (that you intend to watch, at least) Blood and Black Lace really is the best, though. It's the ultimate fashion killzone. Does that only excite me? idk, but it does and never fails so yay. This is the 60's we're talking about.

You and the SAW films, though. hmm. Unsure how you'd take to that.

Just watched Scream 2, haven't seen this movie in time.

It's actually pretty good for a horror sequel, franchise went downhill from this though.

Btw what would everyones top 5 "Slasher" movies be ?

I obviously love the classics such as Halloween, Scream, Elm Street and Friday.

Looking for lesser known ones.

Saw was mostly fine I guess. Though for all of the talk about how old slasher movie had stupid characters, some of the decisions made by these people were baffling. The dud was really that eager for a smoke? Ok I guess!

Some non-super-famous I love are Tourist Trap, Maniac (1980), Sleepaway Camp 1 & 2, The Fog (1980), Black Christmas (1974), Eaten Alive, and The Burning.

Peeping Tom counts I guess too; 1960 proto-slasher.

Never even heard of this service. Might have to look into it, thanks for the heads up. :hmm:
