GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Police say veteran X Games biker Dave Mirra has died in North Carolina. He was 41.

Greenville police said Thursday night that Mirra's body was found earlier in the day with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities say they responded to an apparent suicide and discovered his body in a truck.

Mirra, who was married with two children, had been visiting friends in the area, officials said.

Mayor Allen Thomas called Mirra "a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift."

"He called Greenville, North Carolina home and was as humble a guy talking with kids on a street corner about bikes as he was in his element on the world stage. A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon," Thomas said.

Mirra was an accomplished BMX rider and one of the most decorated athletes in X Games history, medaling every year from 1995 to 2008 and winning 14 gold medals.

His one-time record of 24 career medals was broken in 2013 by Bob Burnquist.

Mirra, who hosted MTV's "Real World/Road Rules Challenge" and had two video games that carried his name, was also in exclusive company with Shaun White as the only athletes to win multiple gold medals over three X Games. Mirra was also tied with Tony Hawk and Joe Parsons as the fastest athletes to win 14 X Games medals. It took them eight appearances to reach the mark.

Wasn't expecting Mirra to go this way.

Rest in peace.

My iPad updates me with news, and I saw a breaking news and it was just something about NBA all-star game festivities. Well in my mind I thought it said Breaking News Person Dead.

The freaky thing, right after I was like, maybe I had foresight, wouldn't it be weird if it does pop up someone dead.....then like 1 minute later, pops ups Breaking News Dave Mirra Dead.

I actually looked into my PS2 games and found my Dave Mirra game, I might play it to honor him...I listened to Motorhead on MAX audio for Lemmy and Phil Taylor, then listened to David Bowie's top 10 songs on youtube....

Heads Up, the following video can never be un-watched, but I guarantee this will cheer someone up: (this also honors David Bowie at same time, so do double whammy and make fun of Mick Jager).

This is really sad he was awesome and had a lot of moments at the X-Games. I'm sure the injuries sustained during his career influenced this decision. RIP
