Its a dark main event. Its purpose is to have the audience go home happy no matter what. That or its a match they dont wanna give away on TV.

Its supposed to be separate from what we see on TV. Every show, Smackdown included, has one. Often its a tag team match, others, steel cage.

Makes sense if they do. He'll have had the title for 90 days by Elimination Chamber, and casual fans are accoustomed to seeing the WWE Championship change hands every 2-3 months.

Sheamus's 2nd reign lasted 91 days - the longest in over 2 years - and I remembed being ready for him to drop the strap when he did.
