Just in time for WrestleMania week, doing the granddaddy of them all for documentation of the Coliseum Video content of WWF PPV events from 1985 to 1997. As expected, there were significant differences between the Coliseum Video versions and the uploads to the WWE Network on Peacock. I've documented all 13 WrestleMania events of the Golden and New Generation eras. Here are the differences you can find on the Coliseum Videos:

I:
  • Vince McMahon introduction to the WrestleMania VHS
  • Vince's voiceover intact for WrestleMania show intro, plus Tim Souster's "Enigma" song (what's used for the Coliseum Video intro montages on the original tapes.) used for intro instead of generic music. Though it's documented that Phillip Bailey and Phil Collins' "Easy Lover" was the song used for the intro.
  • Lord Alfred Hayes' preview of the Ladies WWF Title match is left complete. The Network/Peacock version had the beginning part cut off (probably due to a "WWF".) The titles graphic at the start of it was also intact.
  • Junk Yard Dog's intro wasn't on the Coliseum Video VHS but his theme song on Network version was noticeably dubbed over.
  • Wendy Richter/Cyndi Lauper and Hulk Hogan/Mr. T's entrance music from the video is the same. But the version from the upload has the commentary. Hogan's theme during the time was Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" from what I've been led to believe.
  • The main event's post match music is once again "Enigma".
  • Jesse Ventura provides alternate commentary for the instant replay to the finish of the main event.
  • Closing credits are to upbeat orchestral classical music. I don't know the song. Tacked on at the end are a few additional credits for Coliseum Video.
  • Vince McMahon voiceover ad for "The Best of the WWF: Volume 2" (Not on the WWE Network), "Andre the Giant" (Available on the Network), and "WWF's Most Unusual Matches" (Available on the Network).
II:
  • The "History of Wrestling" scrolling text/montage intro to "Enigma". (It began over 5000 years ago when civilization was young. etc.)
  • Mean Gene Okerland introduction to WrestleMania 2 VHS.
  • WWF starry space logo.
  • The Network version only had the New York skyline graphics but the Coliseum Video had the ones for Chicago and Los Angeles too.
  • Match titles at the beginnings of said matches.
  • Subtitles during a couple of matches identifying commentators
  • A couple of "WWF"'s said by Vince unmuted.
  • Corporal Kirchner's "The Army Goes Rolling Along" theme song left intact during exit, along with commentary. (The Network used a different recording of the same song for some reason)
  • Uncle Elmer's intro wasn't on the Coliseum Video VHS, but it's obvious he came out to "Don't Go Messin' With A Country Boy" in real life, and the intro on the Network dubbed over the song.
  • Coliseum Video closing credits to the same upbeat orchestral music as last WrestleMania.
  • Coliseum Video montage promoting the "Official WWF Home Video Series" up to that point. Set to "Enigma". They List:
    • The Best of the WWF: Volumes 1-6
    • Hulkamania
    • Andre The Giant
    • Rowdy Roddy Piper's Greatest Hits
    • Wrestling's Country Boys
    • The Life and Times of Captain Lou Albano
    • Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat
    • Wrestling's Bloopers, Bleeps, and Bodyslams
    • WWF's Most Unusual Matches
    • WWF's Biggest, Smallest, Strangest, Strongest

      • The Hulkster
      • WrestleMania Highlights
  • Coliseum Video mail in address.
III:
  • Mean Gene Okerland inside Pontiac Silverdome T-Minus 24 hours until WrestleMania. Showing crew setting up for the event. Gene said that they had 360 miles of cable alone inside the Stadium.
  • The day of WrestleMania III with fans outside the Silverdome T-Minus 2 Hours until the show.
  • Gorilla Monsoon and Lord Alfred Hayes doing some pre show commentary for the tape.
  • Starry space WWF logo with music carrying over into WrestleMania III intro.
  • Match titles at the beginnings of matches.
  • Hillbilly Jim's intro was not on the Coliseum Video but like with Uncle Elmer last Mania, he came out to "Don't Go Messin' With A Country Boy" and the Network dubbed that out.
  • During the Hillbilly Jim/King Kong Bundy mixed tag match an insert pre match promo is shown with Craig DeGeorge interviewing Hillbilly Jim about the match.
  • Instant replay of ending to Dream Team/Rougeaus
  • Rowdy Roddy Piper at WrestleMania III press conference announcing retirement insert during Piper's entrance.
  • Only one WWF unmuted.
  • Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat's was not on the Coliseum Video release but his theme song on the Network was dubbed over.
  • Craig DeGeorge interview with Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, and Slick.
  • Craig DeGeorge interviewing fans outside of Pontiac Silverdome prior to event about Hogan/Andre
  • Craig DeGeorge interview with Bobby Heenan in empty Silverdome
  • Hogan and Andre during the WrestleMania III press conference.
  • Coliseum Video closing credits and ending montage to "Real American." The closing on the Network played Aretha Franklin's rendition of "America the Beautiful". But It turns out the actual song played was Aretha's "Who's Zoomin' Who?"

  • Coliseum Video mail in address twice, one for comments, the other for a Coliseum Video WWF catalog.

  • Gorilla and Jesse pre Hogan/Andre commentary complete. Likely due to a "WWF".
  • Tape 1 ends with "WrestleMania IV continues on Tape 2"
  • Tape 2 starts with "WrestleMania IV continues..."
  • Craig DeGeorge post match interview with Honky Tonk Man and Jimmy Hart about Jimmy's new haircut.
  • Bobby Heenan gives a post match promo after being mauled by Matilda.

  • Alternate closing voiceover by Gorilla Monsoon for Coliseum Video.
  • A few WWF's were unmuted.

  • Alternate intro voiceover by Gorilla Monsoon for Coliseum Video.
  • Sean Mooney highlights the WrestleMania VI Festival
  • Extended footage of the Bushwhackers after destroying the guitars of Rhythm & Blues.
  • Rick Rude's theme intact
  • I didn't notice any WWF's on the commentary of the Coliseum Video. So nothing really to document in that department.
  • The Superstars of Wrestling titles were replaced on the Network upload during the Hogan/Warrior recap which wasn't on the Coliseum Video.
  • The most obvious absence is the Piper/Bad News match which I don't need to explain. One wonders if it will be included once the move to Netflix is complete.
VII:
  • Mean Gene Okerland promoting SuperTape 4 (Available on the Network)
  • Lord Alfred Hayes intro.
  • Roddy Piper ad for WWF Hasbro Figures Series 2 singles, Series 1 Tag Teams, and Talking Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior.

  • Lord Alfred Hayes commenting on the Reunion between Randy Savage and Elizabeth.
  • Mean Gene Okerland post match interview with Macho Man/King Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth where Savage talks about mixed emotions.
  • Sean Mooney post match interview with Big Boss Man and Andre the Giant. Boss Man not upset about not winning the Intercontinental Championship from Mr. Perfect but justice was served while Andre expressed his having enough of Bobby Heenan and the Heenan Family.
  • Alternate Sean Mooney interview with the Legion of Doom before their match with Power & Glory.
  • Alternate closing voiceover by Lord Alfred Hayes for Coliseum Video.
  • Coliseum Video mail in address with Lord Alfred Hayes voiceover.
  • A couple of WWF's unmuted but still noticed some muted on the Network version that aren't on the Coliseum Video release. TBH I couldn't tell if the "F" was muted during Marla Maples' interview in the locker room with the Nasty Boys after they won the Tag belts, because it was so noisy.
  • Superstars of Wrestling titles unblurred during recaps.
VIII:
  • Mean Gene Okerland promoting "WWF Crunch Classic" video. (Available on the Network)

  • Highlights from the WrestleMania VIII Festival
  • Coliseum Video cameras catching an even angrier new WWF Champion Randy Savage with Miss Elizabeth saying how he's not finished with Flair.

  • Mean Gene Okerland attempt to interview Doink in his trailer over the double Doink shenanigan during his match with crush before a second Doink enters the trailer.
  • On screen name graphics for Yokozuna and Bret Hart left intact. I assume because Bret's has "WWF Champion" on it.
  • Post event footage with side scrolling text saying that the Kamala/Bam Bam Bigelow match didn't take place but Kamala was spotted with his "fellow countrymen" and shows him hanging out with an elephant and llama.
  • Ad for ICOPRO

  • Ad for King of the Ring 1995

  • Jim Fagan's voice is left intact for the intro package instead of Attitude Era-Ruthless Aggression announcer. What's his name and why did he dub over Jim Fagan?
  • Todd Pettingail's voice left for both the Hollywood Backlot Brawl and Iron Man Match packages instead of Michael Cole. Michael Cole was NOT employed by the WWF in 1996. So why was HIS voice dubbing over the packages narrated by Todd Pettingail?
  • Roddy Piper in the ring with his son, Colt, after winning against Goldust.
  • Ad for College Slam video game
  • Strategy Tips for College Slam
  • Coliseum Video mail in address with Todd Pettingail voiceover.
  • A significant number of WWF's unmuted.
XIII:
  • Ad for WrestleFest 97 (In Your House: Revenge of the Taker) and King of the Ring 1997
  • Coliseum Video logo
  • Red ominous sky WWF logo
  • WrestleMania 13 intro logo still has Playstation sponsor.
  • The Network version had a subtitle tag in the top left corner of the screen with the tag of the event and the date. Proof that the WWE Network upload was ripped from the WrestleMania Anthology DVDs.
  • The Godwinns' theme "Don't Go Messin' With A Country Boy" left intact.
  • Highlights from Slammy Awards
  • Post Chicago Street Fight commentary from Vince, Lawler and JR including the King missing his crown.
  • Vince bidding farewell from WrestleMania 13 plus copyright text.
  • Coliseum Video mail in address with Todd Pettingail voiceover.
  • Several WWF's still intact.
This has been the most challenging. But I managed to complete it in time for this years Mania. The Network uploads do often allow WWF's to remain unmuted when the face says it. But they at times cut away to avoid the mouth saying it anyway.
Anyway I've listed the Coliseum Video content for all the main 4 WWF PPV's. SummerSlam, Survivor Series, Royal Rumble, and WrestleMania I hope one can learn to appreciate the value of what's on these old Coliseum Video releases that one won't find on the WWE Network/Peacock/Netflix streaming service or YouTube uploads. You'll never know what hidden treasures lie on the tapes.
Should I continue and do the King of the Ring and In Your House Coliseum Video VHS tapes as well?
What are your thoughts on the Coliseum Video content of the WrestleManias?

Those are some great childhood memories for me. I loved getting those delivered and my mom rented some at a local video store for me to watch. Seeing the two columns show up on screen and move in either direction to show the Coliseum Video logo was a regular sight for me, and you knew the action was about to start when that happened.
