I think those guys feuding are more like an educated fans dreamfeud, or like ROHs Austin/Rock rather than a WWE version of it, there just doesn't seem to be enough support by the writers to make it as legit as all those feuds, where creative was having their hands full trying to make those feuds as huge as possible. As Thanos said, they are not using enough footage and history to teach the general audience about the epicness this feud could really have, throwing a few lines about both coming from the indies and facing each other before doesn't consistute as building this feud up to be a big deal, which is a huge waste imo.
They could make this feud seem like a huge deal almost in the league with the Nexus Storyline or Summer of Punk if they invested a ton of energy into it. You could build both guys up far more than in any feud by having them rip off ADRs "It's my destiny" stuff, because you could really make a point for them beeing guys that were destined for greatness even back when nobody knew them. ROH wouldn't sue WWE for free publicity, so they could use tons of footage from there, showing how the fans reacted to those guys even back then, show D Bryan in Japan in front of huge audiences etc, some scenes from their past matches against each other, the tears from winning smaller titles to show the passion these guys have killing themselves in front of 100 people facing each other before becoming the stars they are now , then proceed to show them their first successes in the WWE with Punk winning the ECW Title and Bryan winning the US Title to transistion their history in WWE (making midcard titles actually look like an achievement that guys inside the WWE actually want) it would add so much depth and fan-connection to both guys it's unreal.
