For several reasons:

1. Shane O'Mac wasn't a proper wrestler and was obviously rather terrible at wrestling. Therefore, he had to resort to crazy dangerous spots to provide entertainment.

2. He was incredibly agile.

3. He's Vince's son.

4. He wanted to get rid of the "Shane's a pussy" chants that haunted him for months.

5. Because you could get away with stuff like that back then.

I wanna say it's cuz Shane had insane balls and the athleticism to do such crazy shit. It wasn't just once or twice. Even in 2003 against Kane he did crazy spots, and again in 2006 against DX.

Well, because he was the son of the chairman. And it's not like he was a real wrestler, so he did crazy shit in place of really wrestling to make it worth watching.

I always admired Shane's guts AND athleticism. It's not easy doing a version of the "Van Terminator".

He needed to earn his spot on the cards he was on by providing entertaining spots. Without those he was just Vince's son being handed a spot without paying his dues.

I imagine taking those bumps earned him respect in the lockeroom

There's bit of a mad streak in the Mcmahons- Vince and Shane that is. It's a genetic thing.

I remember once Bret Hart or Dana White or Austin, don't remember who, said that Vince was probably the toughest SOB in the company. He didn't have to take the bumps, didn't have to get embarrassed publicly so many times for the sake of his company. He just did that coz he wanted to.

Shane's got the craziness in his genes I guess, but turned up several notches more.

Because he could afford to take months off after such a stunt, which wrestlers under regular contract couldn't afford to. Besides that he was basically a stunt guy kinda character, he is not main event or even mid card by any means.

Shane McMahon was a better wrestler than 3/4ths of the current roster.

Although it was a botch, being thrown on his head/neck on the concrete floor TWICE by Kurt Angle (and then through glass twice and being Angle slammed from the ring post) looked more crazy than those falls

He couldn't wrestle so he had to do something plus he is the son of the Vince which is the number one reason why he was able to do that
