Why isn't Edge considered one of the Greatest of all time?

Looking back at his career i can't think of anyone who had more title reigns than him.
Not to mention he had the look, could talk on the mic and was solid in the ring.

He accomplished more in his career than anyone else i can think of, so why doesn't his name come up more in the GOAT discussion?

Edge is one of the GOAT. And every wrestler you can think of that is stacked up against your arguments (Orton, Hunter, Bastista) is also subject to. Edge has done a lot, and you can't say that he hasn't. But when it gets down to it, he doesn't HAVE his defining moment.

Foley with the HIAC
Austin with McMahon
Rock with the Hollywood boom

They have defining moments. Edge's moments are just written on paper and more then often, not arguable. Yes, he's won the RR, MITB and won both top championships and has a tag team partner. He's become both the most loved and hated person in wrestling, had a live sex celebration and is known for being better than Christian in terms of popularity. He's competed in two TLC matches which were nothing short of success. But what moment is featured on WWE that defines Edge?

The spear off to Hardy? (Orton's pop out RKO's to Evan Bourne, and anyone who jumps off the ropes could be equivalent)
His TLC matches? (Triple H's HIAC matches is equivalent)

He needs one. He is one of the GOAT imo but he will never be known to be.

Notice op said ONE of the greatest of all time, not THE greatest. And to say Edge is not one of the greatest of all time is imo wrong. But i also agree hes no where near Austin hogan rock etc.

Edge is probably underrated all time. I'd have him in the top 15-20 all time region. I can't stand Alter Bridge but love his entrance. I hope he has one last bump left in him and if WM is in Canada (say WM 32 in Toronto or Vancouver) he should have one last match (pun intended) against Christian or with Christian against whoever.

I personally never was a fan of his character. I think he had sub par promo skills at best and his best work in the ring is when he was teamed up with Christian. I do think Edge and Christian were one of the greatest tag teams of all time, but as a singles guy, neither could really cut it that well. The most intriguing feud he had (to me) was his one with Matt Hardy, and that's just because it was a real life feud.

I consider myself a big fan of Edge, but I can never consider him an all time great.

He had the look in Vince McMahon's eyes, and that's why he was so heavily pushed. Despite this, a lot of his title reigns were very weak and didn't offer us much. And honestly, when it came to things such as his in ring performance and his mic work, I think he gets overshadowed by his former partner Christian. I always thought Christian was a much better in ring performer than Edge, and don't get me wrong, they are both outstanding mic workers, but I always enjoyed Christian on the mic more. That's probably just a personal preference of mine, but I digress.

I will always think, however, that Edge and Christian is the greatest tag team of all time.

Going to go ahead and disagree here. The fact that Hunter pulled off a very successful antagonist (at the same time) to arguably both of the biggest stars we've ever seen, during wrestling's peak of popularity puts him in a category above Edge. I sincerely doubt Edge's ability to hang with that caliber of star during that time. He was great in '05 and '06, though.

I guess it's easy to overlook him. He racked up a hefty list of great matches and feuds, and he was a cornerstone on Smackdown for a very long time, but being on Smackdown made him an ancillary main eventer. So while he had less exposure on the "B brand" it all worked out for the best I think, because he still had an incredibly successful career, and Smackdown couldn't run as its own show without a strong backbone like him.

I stopped watching wrestling for 8 years, started back up during the Summer of Punk. I really don't see what the big deal with Edge is. Granted, I missed most of his stuff, but when I see him cut promo's now, he sounds really weird, like someone that's had a stroke or something. He does have a good look, but I'm not quite sure he comes off as a guy that will kick your ass. Granted, I missed a lot of his stuff, so if I took the time and watched it, maybe I'd change my mind, but as it stands right now, the love this guy gets has me scratching my head.

Sorry when I said name a Wrestlemania Edge closed as the winner, with him being in the spotlight as it ended. Should've made that clear.

Every great star has main evented and won a Wrestlemania, the only reason Flair didn't was because he was in the WWF a short time and was still viewed as an NWA/WCW guy.

Austin
Rock
Hogan
Cena
Taker
Brock
HHH
Bret
Michaels

Have all finished the biggest show of the year as the man. Edge wasn't even on the same level as Batista. Solid worker, entertaining, but nowhere near the greatest list.

Fair enough if yours is a list that counts overness as the biggest factor, but I don't understand that point of view. Winning a Wrestlemania ME is as scripted as winning 11 world titles, they're not real accomplishments. Edge was never a priority in terms of booking anyway, so in those terms of course he wasn't on Batista's level - not many people were.

I define a person's legacy mainly on how many classic matches and moments they had, and while Batista has his fair share, as a collective he's not really 'up there'.

He is one of the best. There is no denying that. However, he isn't one of the greatest. There is a difference.

Don't get me wrong. I liked him. I still do. Realistically, though, his retirement shortened his career. He was at his peak. If he would have been able to continue, he probably would have already been one of greatest. There is nothing wrong with early retirement, though. Especially if you are able to retire on a good note and in decent health.

I like Edge but winning X amount of titles does not necessarily make you great (see Billy Gunn also)

He isn't one of the greatest of all time, objectively speaking. If we're talking tag team wrestling, then sure, he and Christian are definitely in the GOAT discussion there, but as a singles star, no.

The reason why is basically because while he was good in every category that you can use to measure and quantify a wrestler's worth or success - drawing power, in-ring skill, promos, etc. - he wasn't the greatest or near the top of the list in any of them. He didn't draw industry changing money the way Hogan, Austin and Rock did. He's also not been the top face or name that has lead an era the way Cena has. He isn't a Kurt Angle/Ric Flair/Shawn Michaels/Bret Hart/Chris Benoit caliber performer, so whenever the true greats as far as ring work come into the discussion, Edge's name won't really be brought up. He is very good on the mic, but whenever you start to have a debate about the true greats of working the mic, then Edge will certainly be below Hogan, Austin, Rock, Foley, Dibiase, Piper, Cena, etc.

Realistically, since GOAT = Greatest Of All Time, there should really only be maybe a handful of people at the most to debate over in each category. There can only be one greatest, after all. Does Edge crack the top five or ten when it comes to the biggest stars in wrestling? Does he crack the top five or ten when it comes to being a great in-ring technician? Does he crack the top five or ten when it comes to being a great talker? I would argue No.

He was a very solid performer and talker. He had a natural rise to the main event - he was a great tag team wrestler, then great in the mid card, then a competent main eventer, and he retired as one. He won several championships and has quite a few noteworthy accolades to his name. But all of that doesn't really make you one of the absolute greatest. Sheamus and Del Rio are the two biggest flops of the past several years, are they 'great' just because they have several kayfabe victories and accolades to their name as well?

IMO, to be considered "one of the greatest", you should at least be in the top ten or fifteen when it comes to being the biggest star or having the complete package, and I don't see Edge as being in that category.
