I’ve heard this shit over and over again and it makes zero sense. Everybody claims that svr 07, Smackdown HCTP, Smackdown SYM are the best wrestling games there are while still playing the newest ones all the time DESPITE claiming that they are shit. What is the actual logic behind that? I think that svr 07 and svr 08 are the best games thus I actually play only them in 2019. It’s contradictory for anyone to say that the game that is allegedly the best is not the one they play, ever. Even though the game they are talking about is 3x cheaper than WWE 2k19 per example.

Probably because it's easier to get your hands on a PC/PS4/Xbox One copy of the newer games.

That being said, I just play Smackdown 2 over and over (that damn season mode at the start is a pain though).
The newer games, while prettier, just take away too much of the actual content for me to enjoy. I want to be able to put tables and ladders anywhere, I want to be able to stack tables, I want to be able to interrupt attacks/grapples and have the refs fight back like in day of reckoning. I HATE the point system when it comes to creating characters.

It all feels super slow as well because they want realism. It's wrestling. It's supposed to be an arcade-like, semi-fast paced game.

SVR07 and SVR09 are the best of the SVR series to me, but I don't play them because they are outdated. You can't play with the newest wrestlers and in the newest arenas and no one else is playing them anymore. It's not the same as playing the game during those time periods, in elementary school I used to invite friends over to play and go play at their house which was a blast. I used to play SVR online once I got my 360, I can't replicate any of those experiences by dusting off any of my old wrestling games and playing them.

The modern day wrestling games are the best when it pertains to creativity. You make your own arenas, championships, logos, etc. But the actual gameplay is really bad. To piggyback off what another poster has said, they are trying to make the gameplay too realistic which slows the game all the way down. The games should be fast paced, and things such as reversal limits and kickout meters need to die. They are a cancer to the game.

To me, SvR 09 was the worst in the series when it comes to both playing matches and game modes. Damn, I started hated wrestling for a bit because of the thing.

For me it doesn’t matter what the other people are playing, if there is a better game I’ll have it. Outdated probably isn’t a problem either, I make about 7-8 class-A caws and problem solved + you have more legends than in 2k. Also, GM Mode in SvR 2008 is worth much more than any online play. It just sucks that they’ve removed it and got shitty Universe mode instead. I’m only talking from my perspective so I hope some snowlakes won’t get offended.

2k games sure have some cool game modes I’d like to see in SvR but to hell with it when the actual matches are worse. Svr 07 and 08 would be perfect if they had a create an arena, better create a championship, finisher, an option to change a color of existing wrestler attires and a few more. But still, I always have much better time playing svr’s than 2k.

Loved svr09 by default cause Victoria was in it.

OP how do you know folks don't play both the new and old games? or are you just assuming?

Don't know about svr 07, but svr 08 had some insane loading screen times that make the game basically unplayable.

I enjoyed SVR09's road to wrestlemania, but yeah it's lacking GM mode and the season mode in the previous games were better because you could literally play them with any superstar as well as your created character and there were numerous storyline paths you could take. The reason I love SVR09 so much is because that's when I first started playing online. I met some cool people that I'm still friends with to this day.

I do agree that GM mode is far superior to universe mode, personally I just always enjoyed the experience of playing with my friends and being able to play against actual competition as opposed to the cpu. 2K has some of the worse gameplay of any wrestling game I've played. I don't know if you played the Day of Reckoning series on gamecube, but those games were very fun as well when it pertains to actual gameplay.

because in many cases, the games arnt amazing NOW. Thats not to say they can't hold up for people but lets be honest, they are old games.

its like saying goldeneye was a phenomenal game.......yes it was in 1997, if anyone played it for the first time in 2019 they would likely say "whats this shite?"

no mercy is one of my favourite wrestling games ever but one I cant really play it because it looks dreadful on my TV and two its really not as good as it used to be back in the day, its aged.

plus you have to factor in things like the rosters.

Well, you see, the sports game that was only good 20 years and not good now can not possibly be the best game that features that sport. That simply means that it’s WORSE than the newer games. So the people that say that HCTP is the best wrestling game but it’s “not good now” are being plain ridicilous. A game that is best in the series must be better than all the others, in the time that we are talking about it.

Btw thanks to the moderator that replaced this tread in the wrestling games section.

I've been playing Fire Pro Wrestling Returns until World came out, and now I'm playing that because it's superior to Returns.

As far as WWE-branded games go:

Favorite game was WrestleFest, but you can't get your hands on it unless you fire up an Arcade emulator. No Mercy, WrestleMania 2000 and WCW vs nWo Revenge were all great when they came out but it's not something that I want to spend my time playing anymore.

Smackdown series on Playstation has always been shit IMO, with HCTP being the only notable exception. SvR was middle-of-the road for me, where I'd play them for a month and ditch them. The 2K games have progressively become my favorite WWE-branded games out of the bunch, with 2K19 being my absolute favorite. Still, I'd rather play Fire Pro.

I made a Virtual Pro Wrestling II thread and that Sith Lord Calburt Frieduck deleted it. I would imagine the same thing happens with other older wrestling game threads.

So according to you I have to keep on playing a wrestling game I think is the best, and I can't play any others? Something can be dated and still be the best. You do you pal.

Not that you should ONLY play that one game, but it’s contradictory that someone doesn’t ever play a game for which he says is the best in the series. You own the alleged best wrestling game ever and never play it? Well, you don’t actually think it’s the best then.

Re: Why don’t people actually play wrestling games for which they claim to be the best?

I have. If SvR ’06 or King of Colosseum 2 were available to play on the PS4 or the X1 as is, trust me, I would be playing them. SvR ’06 was the most balanced WWE game; realistic match mechanics (5 seconding rope break, KO mechanics, submission KO mechanics) while having an acceptable speed for gameplay that wasn’t too fast and wasn’t too slow, and easy to use controls. If this game was remade with match options, abilities, and creation suite of 2k19, it would be considered the best WWE game ever.

Meanwhile King of Colosseum 2 seemed like a worthy spiritual successor to No Mercy and the other AKI games. It had room for improvement though. It just needed:

• a better creation mode (you select a head, and can’t edit the hair or beard styles, including if you want it removed, or add/remove facepaint or a mask. There’s only one female head available in the entire game. You can’t make refs or championships/trophies either).

• certain match mechanics, physics, and features (crowd fighting, guardrail moves when irish whipped into them, moves off of the ramp, better weapon selection when retrieving one, 5 count rope break, 5 count on the top rope, better physics in blood/weapons/environment, better limb damage selling – sometimes took way too long for limb to be held when worked on relentlessly).

• an expansion of match type selection and settings (3 v 3, 4 v 4, gauntlet, steel cage, ladder, a proper lumberjack match, a falls count anywhere option, death matches & electrified cage matches from the Fire Pro games, since it was developed by the same company).

• And be not just exclusive to Japan.

But it’s still the best pure wrestling game I have ever played (and a decent MMA experience to boot), and I can play with nearly a dozen different feds in Japan with a couple hundred wrestlers, boxers, and MMA fighters overall. I love this game for a reason.

I enjoyed 2K18, even though it wasn’t popular. And I was enjoying 2K19, but it feels like they patched the gameplay, making it go from being a fun challenge giving me epic long matches to being easy again and feeling uninspired. So, I traded both 2K games for better games.

So, all I have right left now is Fire Pro World. I’d rather have a sequel to King of Colosseum 2, (King of Colosseum 3/World Tour/Fire Pro 3D, whatever they want to call it) or even a remaster of the game, but this works.

the sad truth is pro wrestling like any game based on sports is more about the wish fantasy fulfilment and simulation than the actual meat and potatoes gameplay

you can only play Smackdown on the PS1 and make Al Snow the main eventer that chances are as an Al Snow fan back in the day you wanted to see him become until its gets upstaged by newer stuff and or you're no longer immersed and you realise that there is no way its going to happen in real life.

Still it is fun to pretend right?

I mean I don't play them because I don't have any way to play them now. I've tried to emulate them but I can never get the controllers to work for my laptop so I don't really care at that point. I play the newer games mostly online with my friends. I don't think I put to much time into anything in 2K outside of career mode other than playing online. I enjoy that because it's with my group of friends I have, and we have some insanely fun matches.
