Given that the pinnacle of pro wrestling is now WWE, why would anyone want to go through all that training and sacrifice to become a pro wrestler in an industry that now caters and panders specifically to 5-10 year olds?

Where is the motivation anymore to be a wrestler, where the idea is essentially to be a fearless fighter, yet the only reaction you're looking to draw from is kids - which requires very little of what bring a true pro wrestler nor being a badass?

Are these guys now in it more for fame/money, and not real pro wrestlers? Are they actually just guys 'playing' pro wrestlers on TV rather than being pro wrestlers as Austin said?

Thoughts?

Well to be honest decline has already started. Far few ppl wana get in to pro wrestling bec even if u make in to wwe chances of you making good money for limited amount of your carrer is slim. This is the reason why you dont see well built wrestlers or larger than life wrestlers now a days.
Only ppl now a days who wana get into wrestling are the ones who wont get anyother job or probably the ones who never made out of highschool.
A decent eng degree or diploma can ear you around 120k+ and you dont have to put your body on the line for that.

LOL where the fuck did you get the notion that the idea of being a wrestler is to be a "fearless fighter?" That's NEVER been what American wrestling is just go watch puro if that's what you want.

Not for those who enjoy wrestling it isn't.
Then why did Kevin Steen give up being an indy superstar where he could do whatever he wanted and not have to put up with the dreaded "limited moveset~!" to join WWE?

He's done everything possible in the indies, he's had his fun. Now it's about getting that money and providing even more money for his family.

If I was an aspiring wrestler, i'd be WANTING to wrestle. I'd want to be in the likes of Lucha Underground, NJPW etc where you can do what you aspire to be, a professional wrestler and entertain fans.

That's not the issue though. It could be targeted at mature audience, but with shitty booking, it's still the same. You should ask why the creative are so bad with their stories, booking, character development, etc.

Maybe because they enjoy wrestling in WWE?

These guys do not see it the way fans see it...

Many different wrestlers have made that clear over the years...

And what's wrong with being entertaining for kids? That's how you create lifelong fans

Many of us here started watching as kids

And the whole "true pro wrestler" thing I don't really know what you mean, pro wrestling has been the same business for like a century

You must remember that the people in the system right now are a product of - at the very latest - Ruthless Aggression era wrestling. When they decided to start getting trained it was from watching mid 00s content. When you're several years into investing yourself into something you're not gonna feel like turning back, especially since many (most?) of these guys will have foregone higher education for the purpose of pursuing things.

Although I question what you said about it not being the mark of a true pro wrestler, getting a rise out of kids.
