Why did the fans turn against Shawn Michaels after Summerslam 1997?

At Summerslam Shawn was genuinely trying to call the match down the middle. Bret Hart SPAT in Shawn's face for rightfully getting called out on his bullshit. Anyone would respond by trying to hit that person with the chair in their hand, but Shawn only accidentally hit Taker and had no choice but to count the pin, giving Bret the title. Shawn was also visibly upset waking out of the ring to the back. The fans on RAW the next night booed Shawn for doing exactly what they would have done, unless they liked spit in their face. Shawn told them they can go to hell and I never blamed him for that. He wasn't being booed before and was still heavily cheered, although second to Austin by that point. He wasn't in "coo hoots" with Bret. So why did the fans turn on him for that? And honestly Shawn was right to say 'piss off' he got blamed for something that was an accident and didn't do anything on purpose.

I don't know any of this for a fact but...

Maybe the fans didn't like his goody two shoes approach to the match. They would have preferred that Shawn behave with more tweener-ish tendencies and he responded to the fans by introducing degeneration X
Because Undertaker lost the title. Then of course the promo that he cut wasn't remotely apologetic so that amplified it. It's tough to say what their plans were given the shenanigans that ensued in the following months, but it seems like the heel turn was the plan, so... It worked. I wonder how they would have played it that night if he had come out to cheers.

When you have a bad attitude, moan, whine, bitch and complain even if you have a point, it still makes you a heel.

If it had been good guy John Cena he would have apologised, brought The Undertaker some flowers and accepted the consequences like a man.
I remember thinking the fans turned real quick on him considering it wasn’t intentional, but he cemented it with that promo the following night.

Set up a legendary feud with Taker before Montreal as well. Great few months.
American fans preferred Taker as the champion, Shawn was getting too annoying and cutesy as a babyface. Him cutting a promo crying and announcing his retirement earlier in 97 dwindled his image in the fans eyes, especially when in contrast with no-nonsense gritty guys like Undertaker, Steve Austin, Ahmed and Farooq..
Canadians hated him with passion, and didn't take kindly either to any main eventer who wasn't affiliated with Bret
That damn Canadian Bret Hart spit on Shawn and Shawn swung on the damn Canadian. I would have done the same exact thing and Shawn was right to say fuck the fans for turning on him. If a Canadian spit on me, my arab ass would ride on my camel annd knock the damn Canadian out with a fucking chair. Only Canadians spit on people because they cant fight for real so they resort to little girl tactics like spitting. Fucking Canadians. I’m just joking around of course. Or am i?🤣
Fans were booing face Shawn Michaels way before that. I guess it has something to do with his face and personality ;)

No way, I mean sometimes/some places, sure, but they were literally cheering him on the Summerslam go-home show just 7 days earlier.
He was a terrible face of the company, plus the fans wanted to see Stone Cold more.
The American wrestling fans don't accept responsibility for their actions, just like their American hero Shawn Michaels. Canada isn't riddled with violence and racial prejudice like America.

That may be but Shawn was being cheered pretty well heading into that match.
90% of the target demographic couldn't stand Shawn. I was at multiple events where Shawn was booed as a babyface. Vince was intent on putting him on top. I remember one time in particular during a taping where a "Shawn is gay" chant was started and Shawn stormed off and Vince gave the fans a death stare. It obviously never made it to TV. Like an earlier poster stated, he was an unlikeable prick.
