Just so he can say he was a MITB winner, which is one of the few things he hadn't done in his career up to that point. Yeah, I know, it was kinda stupid but WWE loves having Cena win. I wouldn't even be if he won the IC title at some point in the future, even though he's way above that belt.

The real reason is they're going into the fall with Cena/Rock in the WWE Title mix against a heel CM Punk. It isn't the time for a Miz type to be in the mix with the suitcase. They are going heavy on star power. Dolph Ziggler gets to be the guy who hopefully benifits from the Smackdown MITB. We'll see. I have my doubts if he keeps taking that damn kick.

it was pretty damn pointless but still.. punk is viewed differently and The Rock got his ass kicked in the process good things did come out of it, so i have no issues with them treating MITB like trash..sure it couldve went to someone who could use the push and attention but after watching the ending to RAW im alright with it..

1. To pad Cena's accomplishments.
2. They obviously have no plans for any of the "young talent" to win the WWE Championship.

I honestly think that it was just so they didn't have any young guy run around with the briefcase for months when they have other plans for the WWE Championship already (CM Punk, Rock, Cena). That and they are not exactly doing well right now with having plenty of midcarders who could win the MITB...

If it was just to pad his accomplishments, then the guy would have straight up won the title last night as CM Punk turned heel.

This is exactly why. With Punk vs Rock basically confirmed for the Royal Rumble albeit unofficially, and Cena vs Rock 2 at WrestleMania for the WWE title, the WWE title will be held exclusively by Punk until then, or Punk trading it with Cena. They didn't have room for anybody else.

Not to mention, somebody had to lose eventually, and it couldn't be an up and comer because that would damage them. With Cena it just rolls off his back.

1. Had to have someone finally lose their cash-in. Cena is bulletproof, it does not hurt him to lose and be distinguished as the first-ever briefcase-wielding MITB loser.

2. There are no plans to have Punk drop the WWE Championship anytime soon. He's probably going to keep carrying it all the way to The Royal Rumble to wrestle The Rock to set up Cena/Rock II for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania and perhaps set up Punk/Austin just underneath that.

3. Frankly, having two young guns/midcarders carrying briefcases at the same time kind of diminishes both and it would probably harm Dolph Ziggler to have a Raw briefcase-holder. Ziggler gets to be the one Mr. Money in the Bank in WWE, which gives him a rub all by itself as everyone knows he's going to be gunning for Sheamus's World Heavyweight Championship in the coming weeks and months (in all likelihood).

Honestly, it was probably the best move they could have made.

It's honestly more important at this time to truly, authoritatively, cement the CM Punks and Sheamuses as elite WWE main event stars than to bumrush another midcarder's push to main event level for mere uppercard exposure. Especially since they're busy rebuilding The Miz with the Intercontinental Championship, bring Rey Mysterio back to feud with Alberto Del Rio and give Ziggler the slow, steady push in part via the briefcase and Jericho.
