Television was always one of the most important things in pro-wrestling, dating back to it's early days on local networks across the globe. Having television exposure in those days meant a huge amount because it meant that you had a fan base to draw live crowds from. If companies travelled outside to a town where their show wasn't airing the draw would be poor in comparison.
So, to be having a conversation today about whether it was Nitro or Raw...it was neither because the industry has long been reliant on television exposure.
Now, there could be an argument made for TNA Wrestling being the first company to really only be able to survive because of their television deal. The money they make from that makes up a large amount of the money which comes into the company and without it they'd have gone out of business by now. The same could be argued for WCW because Ted Turner only bought it so he could control one of his most popular television shows on his network.
