(I dunno where to add this thread, so i put it here, however mods plz move it if you feel it's better to place in a different section thank you)

As a young boy, I remember my grandfather would love to watch the old school 70's and 80's wrestling. He would watch it religiously on tv. As a teen he would continue to watch it and would never mention anything about it being staged or fake which actually leads me to believe he thought it was a legit sport.

So my question is when did pro wrestling finally admit to being fake? Thanks a ton!

Technically, it was during the steroid trial with Vince saying it was predetermined, this also helped him get around health regulations with various state athletic commissions. Though there have been other incidents, once in Japan someone starting shooting on a guy and he left the ring and went on the mic and said "wrestling's fake", also there were exposes (20/20, Morton Downey Jr Show, etc) done in the 80's on pro wrestling that featured Jim Powers talking about the insides of the industry and he claimed he was blackballed for turning down homosexual advances from a promoter, while arguing with Dave Schultz the guy who slapped John Stoessel on national tv when he was asked if it was fake (don't know if it was named specifically but Jim Barnett (Bill Watts claims wrestling promoters knew Roc Hudson was gay years before it came out because it was known that Barnett was a boyfriend of his) who was an NWA board member is thought to be who he talked about blackballing him, though WWF, Memphis, Stampede and other companies had issues over pedophilia and other sex scandals that piece by piece opened up the industry). Really it could be argued that it went back to the early 1900's to when doubt was planted, with the whole Gotch/Hackenschmitt controversey over Gotch supposedly paying a sparring partner to injure Hackenschmitt then supposedly shooting on him in a 2 out of 3 falls match that was supposed to be predetermined to go to three rounds and Gotch quickly won 2 falls.

I remember this too. Seems correct. Thanks for the heads up!

It's been known for awhile. But the first really big thing though was the 20/20 report on wrestling in the early 80's. But it was pretty well known before that even.

I think most people knew it was fake even when it began as a part of travelling fairs and stuff. I believe a Wrestler would pick a fake crowd member out and fight him, it was all a work of course. And people must have known. The staged nature of wrestling has always been something of an open secret.
