Hey guys, this might sound like a silly question, but I am really curious to know how does Cena's STF work. He applies no pressure at all on the neck area of the opponent, most of the times he doesn't even lock his arms around the opponent's forehead. So, is it meant to be be just a leg lock, as in all the pressure and impact on the opponent's legs? Honestly, I think the move looks ridiculous.

Thoughts?

Usually, he has his arms right below the chin, making it hard for the opponent to get any breathing room. On top of that, he also has one of their legs bend in a position that hurts an awful lot. I've been in it and believe me, it hurts!

Great submission hold that gets a lot of hate because John Cena does it and he's the devil.

That's because guys have tapped seconds after the puts the hold on.

The actual moves hurts, Cena just does it poorly. He hardly applies any pressure these days. When he used the STF on The Rock during their WrestleMania match, and The Rock looked like he was passing out, it looked totally unconvincing.

I think there's a difference from 'being safe' and making it look utterly shit.

Bret Hart was safe with his opponents yet he laid in his holds. Cena just looks like he wants to slip it in the backdoor, while you smell his palms.

Hey why don't we just have guys punching each other from opposite sides of the ring, sure there will be a 10 foot gap in between them, but it's at least playing safe.

it's a neckcrank. and it supposed to put pressure on the neck and back of the opponent.

The biggest fault with the STFU is that he often has his hands far from the face and neck so he's visibly neither choking the opponent (which I figured was the point of his variation of the STF when he debuted it), or giving them a neck crank. The case is sadly that he doesn't do anything other than lie on his opponent.

Regal's STF looks more believable than Cena's. Not saying his isn't bad, but he could put a little more effort to it.

And?

Most of the people Chris Benoit locked the Crossface on tapped out only a handful of seconds after being caught in the hold. That list includes Cena too. When you're a main eventer, it only makes sense that your submission finisher is booked as dominating and credible as possible. (although sometimes I hate the booking such as Cena making a submission master like Benoit tap out)

And for the people complaining about the execution "looking like shit". Can you point out what's wrong with this?

yes he should pay close attention to bryan's no-lock or benoit's crippler crossface. All moves that involve a crossface to apply pressure on the neck back and arm/shoulders.

he doesn't apply pressure to his stf an that is because indeed he just lies on his oppontent instead of pulling backwards to apply the pressure on his opponent.

^ That just looks like they're cuddling in a really really weird way. It doesn't look that he's in pain at all. His head is barely pulled back, and his leg is in a 90º angle, which it doesn't hurt at all.

Now this looks a little more believable. Which is how the STF should be
performed everytime.

It really is a poorly executed stf. Looks more like an awkward cuddle than anything else.

Ironically enough I believe that he applies no pressure because he has no pressure put on him, he knows that he can go through the motions because he's the top star and nobody else on the roster poses a real threat to his position. Therefore Cena just coasts through his work a lot of the time. Just my opinion though (before the brigade arrives).

Cena working safe is a good thing, they don't want their top star to go around hurting guys and getting a rep for being reckless.
If you can't put on a hold like that and make people suspend their disbelief without injuring an opponent then you have problems.

Your comment suggests that he's not skilled enough to make the move look legitimate. You would have to be really clumsy to hurt someone with a move like that in a worked environment. I don't buy your point as an excuse in relaton to a move like this, if it was the case and Cena can't be trusted to do the move properly then why do it at all? There are plenty of other holds to use.

The "problem" is that Kane is so tall (and his leg is so stiff) that Cena can't reach well enough to execute it in his normal, improper fashion. He's still positioned wrong on your picture though. Here's a good example of how he does it wrong:

He's clearly not pulling the head (as the STF is supposed to do), nor choking him (which could be a variation). It's apparent that he's actually not doing anything at all, other than lying on HHH and giving him an awkward hug.

Benoit's crossface looked more devastating, and when you combine that with Benoit's superior intensity, he made that move look better than anyone else could.

That pic looks old-ish, but that's one of his better executions of the move. Nowadays however, he hardly applies any pressure, maybe he's just being overly safe, but this is a a perfect example of an awful STF:

Virtually no pressure applied. It just looks like he's dry humping The Rock for a minute.

I would take Rock's "sharpshitter" over cena's stfu all day
