PlayStation Classic includes Grand Theft Auto 1, Resident Evil 1, Twisted Metal 1, and Rainbow Six 1. It has critically acclaimed titles like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, Syphon Filter, and Rayman. It has R4: Ridge Racer Type 4, which was one of the best racing games on PlayStation. It has Battle Arena Toshinden, which was a launch title for PlayStation. It has rare gems like Intelligent Qube, and the bizarre title Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.

It includes two original PlayStation controllers. Other than a few missing popular titles, like Tomb Raider, Gran Turismo, and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, I don't see anything wrong with the game collection. Most likely, licensing and rights issues were the reason some games were excluded. Gran Turismo and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater have music that could cause issues with rights, for example. I don't get the issue some have with some of the games being the PAL (European version). You can still play these games, even if their motion is a bit slower.

It would've been nice to see certain superior sequels, like Resident Evil 2, Twisted Metal 2, and Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear. But for whatever reasons, rather licensing issues, keeping the console below 100 dollars, etc, they were excluded. Most of the 20 titles included are historically important to the PlayStation, so it's probably best to include the first entries in their series anyway.

PlayStation Classic seems to be about the beginning of PlayStation, even including the original controllers. When I hear people bash it, it's usually about "so-and-so game I loved isn't there," like Tony Hawk's Pro Skater or Smackdown, for example. They then completely ignore the rest of the system.

So what's this all actually about? What's so bad about PlayStation Classic? From what I can see, Sony didn't do anything wrong. I don't agree with the game collection being bad, as most of the games clearly are not. I don't mind PAL versions. I don't mind it's only 20 games. I like the original controllers. So what's the problem?

Actually, most gamers who born during beginning or classic consoles barely complain about PS1 or PSX except this console maybe

The mini one always have air circulation problem than the big one and yet Sony did similar mistake when they launched PS2Slim version, despite the air problem can handle by USB fan but that console couldn't handle few game when I turn that console onto diskless, play through USB or harddisk drive such as RE4 and SvR2007 only stuck at logo while God Of War 2 didn't have proper render stage(I guess this one because bad copy)

It doesn't have a great selection of games but otherwise there's nothing wrong with it.

It's easily hackable and a decent emulator.

Ive never used it but criticisms seemed to centre around the actual console feeling rather cheap and simply not including a fantastic selection of games. The box even has the word "preloaded" on the back which makes it seem like you could actually download more if you wanted.....which you couldnt. Not a great choice of wording.

Personally I wouldnt be spending these sums of cash on an old console with 20 locked games when you could easily just pick up an old PS1 for a fraction of the price and play whatever games you like.

overall, it really depends on anyone's opinion as to whether it was good enough, if the games didnt do it for you then you arnt going to like it.....because you can't do anything about it. Not everyone is going to regard MGS or rainbow six as the great games they remember. If you could download any PS1 game from a store for £2 each then there would be nothing to dislike.

Plus in any case, playing a game from 20 years ago is always going to be underwhelming, people imagine it like they used to, problem is you don't factor in time and advancement in technology so once you step back into the game, you suddenly realise its not the thing you believed it was. Its dated and generally just not that amazing anymore. Therefore you feel let down. I recently played goldeneye after not playing it since the early 2000s and it was nothing like I remembered at all really.

Two major problems with it.

1) Games you haven't played for 20 years are invariably much better in your memory than they are in real life. When you play them again you're going to be disappointed with them. The best modern games are way, way better than the best games from 20 years ago - as they should be - and that's the level of quality you're used to.

2) Emulators have been invented which play every single game on this and many other consoles for nothing. The sort of people who would be interested in buying a PlayStation Classic are tech nerds, we already know about them. I have emulators on my phone that can play PS1, PSP, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS etc. why am I going to buy a console with 20 games? If I wanted an emulator under my TV I'd buy an android system that has 20 emulators and a million games on it.

I don't have a problem with any of these classic consoles being released. The thing that gets me is that people don't realize that emulators have been available for all these consoles for years.

I don't believe hes talking about the original PS1, just the re-released version that was essentially another means of generating some cash. It was fine for those who wanted it, just likely couldve been better.

it was much like all these "remastered" games when all they have done is alter the contrast and re-sell it for its full price again tbh. It wasnt worth that much money and shouldnt of been marketed as such.

I enjoy the PlayStation classic, however, the fair criticisms are 1) the poor selection of games. You can't please everyone, but things like Tomb Raider as you say really should be there. 2) The launch price of £80 was a disaster. It was clearly not worth that price and consumers outright rejected it. By the boxing day sales (iirc this was only a month or two) it was already at £40. For the £40 I paid and how easy it is to hack it's well worth it in my opinion. I understand emulators are available, but this offers a great nostalgia trip with the proper controllers.

they couldn't even include the USB AC adapted with it for crying out loud.

The games were the biggest issue for me. Too many must haves that were not included

These retro consoles are essentially useless to me unless they have

1. Optional 240p output for those with a CRT lying around (for those wanting a TRUE nostalgic experience)
2. Any of those really expensive games on the retro market like Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden 2, etc,.

Otherwise you might as well stick to emulation

Well, what's the point of rebuying an old console when, barring a few notable exceptions, most of the big releases for the PS4 are basically remakes from those very same games?

The ones who still play those games already own a PSX and a copy of said games, so no point in buying it again; while the ones who moved on and now simply want a slight nostalgia fix are going to stick with the remakes that, for the most part, are basically aesthetically enhanced carbon copies of the originals. Simply put, Sony shot themselves in the foot this time by going full overdrive with the nostalgia fever.

I think you missed out unfortunately. It was £16 for a while yesterday but they sold out. It will probably go back to this price in a future sale. Black Friday if not before.

ahhh, £16 was a steal though, I certainly wouldnt be complaining at that price. Thats less than a £1 per game.

Fair play on anyone who grabbed one. Great bargain.
