What was a bigger heel turn? Hulk Hogan or John Cena?

Both heel turns much awaited, both well done, once in a generation moments. For those who have seen them I don't need to explain why. As much as the moment of Hogan's heel turn felt amazing, I felt same for Cena's heel turn. Hogan was well supported by nWo (the biggest stable to date back then) and they did some time on mic soon after the turn. But I liked Cena's heel turn more, perhaps it was very well fueled by Rock's presence. Tough call but I would go with Cena here.

“No. No, I wouldn’t [give any advice to John Cena about playing the heel]. I loved working heel when I was in WCW. I loved working heel when I first came into WWE, because that was a true heel. When I turned heel at what WrestleMania 17, the people didn’t want me to turn heel. It was a force to turn. It was my idea. Vince always likes to do something big on a WrestleMania. So, I suggested that. And he said, okay, but it was a s**t move. People weren’t ready for it. People didn’t want it.

“I just figured it go over like gangbusters. The heel I was trying to be was so hated, so so much, so fast. I think I tried too hard. When I look back at it, sure, I got to push the creative envelope and do a lot of things that were cool or whatever, and, you know, push the envelope in a different direction and go out on a limb. But, people didn’t want me to turn heel, and so I should have never done that. So, I don’t think that I’m in a position that I need to offer John Cena any advice from Steve Austin,” Steve Austin said.

Hogan easily, no contest. Cena's heel turn and the aftermath doesn’t make sense and feels off, especially after he didn’t change his attire and music and didn’t give any convincing reasons to turn on Cody. And when he is fed to Cody at WrestleMania, it will not even be in the top 5 of all time, lol. Triple H for you, horrible booker.

Kayfabe or not and regardless on how much people knew how the magic worked the biggest reason why Hogans heel turn worked is what he said was TRUE.

It is why it resonated so much and got emotions. I know some don’t understand how big of a celebrity Hogan was in the 80s. Even if you didn’t watch wrestling you heard of him. He was the champ hanging with stars like Ali, Mr. T, and Rambo/Rocky.

He made a lot of people know of WWF. He made WWF a lot of money and a household name and months earlier that same company acknowledged the competition for first time in the manner it did by dissing him as a has been.

You knew when he struck back at them it was real payback. When you saw him with Razor and Diesel who were just seen in promos being called new generation we hear Hogan acknowledge them as the new order of wrestling.

You also knew when Hogan jumped ship there was a buzz for WCW that they never had before. After a year and change some of those fans grew weary and tired of him and his WWF buddies taking over as Bischoff/Turner were appeasing him.

The promo was genuine and hit all the points that also included fans who turned on him due to the steroid scandal as well as fans who forgot he was the guy they came out to see years prior also in WWF.

The promo was a build up of frustration between organizations and fans ever since 1991 imo. It was much more than just a regular heel traditional promo which is why it has been hard to replicate or duplicate.

Hogan's was definitely the bigger one. No one saw it coming. I certainly didn't. And I think he had been off tv for a couple of months before Bash at the Beach so seeing him was a surprise. Everyone thought he was going to take down Hall and Nash, but we all know what happened next. Hogan being heel just did not seem possible (though he had been one before Hulkamania began). It is really one of the most shocking moments in pro wrestling.

There is a similarity with Cena messing with tradition just as Hogan did spray painting the WCW title. This part of the angle with Cena wanting to be the last real champion and ending the lineage has potential and is different.

With this segment they can definitely run back Roman and Bloodline trying to get it back, Cody with his lineage trying to get it back, and Bron Breaker with his lineage trying to stop him too.

The twist of The Rock trying to stop him is also something that can be played up due to his lineage as well.

All the asshats who voted for Cena should be revoked of their posting abilities and named and shamed. On what level of delusion must you operate to remotely think Cena’s heel turn was bigger than Hogan’s. Nothing will touch Hogan’s turn, he changed and revitalized the industry with his turn.
