My apologies as a newcomer here if this has been discussed in some capacity before, but nonetheless: suppose Bret had decided not to go along with the change of plans for the WrestleMania IX main event. Suppose for instance he'd chosen to react to Fuji throwing salt in his face by instead rolling quickly out of the ring and rushing up the aisle, pretending to still be blind and not knowing where he is, and staying out despite what we'd assume would be Yokozuna's efforts to get him back in until the referee would have no choice but to count him out and thus let him keep the title for at least then. Or if he'd decided to turn the tables on Hulk at the risk of a heel turn: he'd let everything go as planned, then throw the swerve by climbing into the ring as Hulk was celebrating the win, down him with a chair shot from behind, grab the mike, and apologize to the fans for doing so but claim that Hulk had been in cahoots with Yokozuna the whole time, that he'd sold out to Fuji in exchange for the title back, and that he (Bret) could and would produce the proof of this supposed sellout in the near future in the interests of "maintaining the purity of the sport."

So the big question would be, if either of these hypothetical scenarios were to have played out instead, would Bret be fired then and there either by a steamed Vince or under Hulk's pressure? And if so, assuming he'd then sign with WCW, would he have made more headway in that company in a window of time where Hulk would not have been running the show? Or if Vince would have kept him and decided, "What the heck?" and run with the sudden swerve, would he simply have turned Bret fully heel then and simply had him play off Hulk that way (although given how over Bret was then, it probably wouldn't have been a long heel run at all, similar to L.O.D.'s 1988 turn), or do similar to the Warrior-Savage buildup for SummerSlam '92 and leaving the question of whether all-American Hulk had sold out to the devious Japanese villains hanging till either King of the Ring or SummerSlam '93 as long as Hulk didn't veto such an angle? Probably the latter would have been the best way to go, putting they and Yokozuna in a prototype Fatal Three Way, ending with Hulk proving his honor by eliminating Yokozuna from the match, but then being pinned cleanly (if perhaps by surprise) by Bret for the title win. But of course, hindsight always is 20/20....
