What happened to storylines?

I was wondering. Whatever happened to storylines i.e a story playing out over many episodes? For example - 2005 - Batista wins the Rumble. Triple H spends weeks convincing Dave that he should go after JBL. Even had a JBL limo run him down IIRC but eventually Batista turns and bombs HHH through the table.

Among current storylines - firstly, Bryan and HHH have a lot of background. So I'll give WWE that and Shield vs Kane too. Other feuds, not so much

2. Brock-Taker - no story
3. Cena-Wyatt - no story
4. Batista-Orton - no story
5. Can't remember the last time the IC title had a storyline

Rhodes Brothers vs Authority played out over multiple weeks. Bryan-Wyatt had story behind it but apart from that, the past few months (years even), stories are taking less and less importance. More often than not, it's a case of people coming out and saying I'm better than X, Y as opposed to I want to break X, Y in half because of what he did. Looks to me like a case of a lot of short term planning i.e writing episodes week to week

Sound off your thoughts

Re: What happened to stoylines?

Taker feuds don't have stories anymore, for Taker the "story" is breaking the streak, as he only wrestles once a year now.

Cena and Wyatt has developed a story now, Wyatt is trying to expose Cena, for the phony he is (kayfabe)

BOOtista/Orton has no story it seems b/c NOBODY cares about it. I think the original plan for BOOtista to be accepted as a face and their Evolution history would be the story.

I agree that it seems like very short-term planning and re-writing based on things the WWE over-looked or just didn't want to admit. Also, throw in some very LAZY booking.

But this is nothing new, its very rare for the WWE to actually go through with any well developed, drawn out storylines.

You should watch WWE Monday Night Raw then. They actually had everything you mentioned on nearly each show over the past 2-3 weeks.

Did you not see Brock and Taker last night talking about ending the streak? did you miss when Cena had a lamb mask on? You must have missed the opener with Orton and Batista talking about the title, no? Christian became the IC number one contender, did you miss that?

Streak doesnt really need a story at this point. Even when its the same thing every year, I can accept that.

Orton/Batista screams "Plan went terribly wrong and we dont know what to do with them now".

Cena/Wyatt has a story.. its basically the same thing as Rise Above Hate with Kane a few years ago.

I remember hearing a rumour about mothers complaining to the WWE's advertisers that their children are too into watching Raw and so they don't do their homework and when they have to go to school Tuesday morning they're groggy and can't concentrate from not getting enough sleep after Raw ends. So, to keep them happy, the WWE makes sure Raw isn't too entertaining--they do this by keeping it light on story and padding it with recaps, WWE Network promos, hyping whatever charity WWE is partnering with at the moment and meaningless matches between midcarders.

A couple of those have stories, just not interesting ones. Cena/Wyatt is Cena/Kane, the streak is the story, but that's it. No backstage segments or brawls, no deception, nothing outside the box.

Storylines and rivalries barely even exist today.
Which is funny since WWE supposedly WWE have a team of creative writers and even some people who worked in Hollywood. You would think we would have more developed characters and story arcs throughout the entire program. WWE likes to identify itself as another entertainment television show yet it seems all they do is throw random matches together with little to no storytelling. The entertainment value has been diminished overall.

Well....overall those aren't well-written stories so that's why OP is saying there is no story (not literally). No story meaning no real, significant, well-written story. Just compare them to Ruthless Aggression era or Attitude Era. Much more drama. PG era storylines are decent, but not spectacular. They CAN BE BETTER.

1. Brock and Taker
This week's RAW is the 2nd time Brock gets freaked out and makes the story even more predictable that Taker will own Brock at mania. Brock should've speared Undertaker, destroyed the casket, and beat up those hooded druids. There needs to be some hint at Brock actually having a chance against the streak other than being a big angry muscle head.

2. Cena had a lamb mask on.
Ok, that's it? Why don't they show Cena in his house hallucinating (way more than that bathroom scene)? Everywhere he goes, he should be seeing Wyatt Family when he turns around and then they disappear. How bout having Wyatts attempt to mind control Cena into doing things against his character, kidnap him in the parking lot, interrogate him, etc.

3. Orton/Batista
They complain and bark at each other yet there are no scenes of them doing anything personal outside of the arena. No arguments backstage leading into brawls? No heel Batista "accidentally" scratching Orton's car or vice versa?

4. Christian becoming IC number one contender
Why has Christian been attacking Sheamus without making it more personal? If a character dislikes someone, they should show that they mean it. Triple H invaded Orton's house in 2009. Batista beat the crap out of Rey Mysterio some years ago despite them being friends and Rey mentioning Eddie Guerrero. Edge slapped Cena's father and then Cena beat the crap out of Edge backstage later on.

IC title/ US title have had no story behind matches for a while now

I thought Brock Taker would have a better story tbh

Welcome to the PG era, it's getting worse here every day.

they tried it, fans apparently want instant gratification when it comes to stories. look at the Bray Wyatt vs Daniel Bryan story.
This is accurate as well, a good chunk of the audience refuses to let shit develop before shitting on it, or throwing "What?"s at the promos etc. You couldn't give a lot of people a 10 month storyline where the fan truly gets what they want only towards the end. People would be crucifying the shit to death.

Lack of storylines are insanely ironic in todays WWE. They want to cater to kids, but last time I checked, don't kids LIKE stories? If anything, WWE today should be having more storylines than ever, instead it's the exact opposite!

Storylines maybe arent as good as they used to but to say they dont exist is ridicolous. Bryan - hhh?

Cena-Wyatt has a story are you kidding? Taker-Lesnar could of been done better but the story is there.
