Cody announced during a media conference call that AEW will, starting today and updated every Friday going forward, release a Top Five Ranking for every title.

He also announced a "new prize" will be unveiled next month - worded this way to not designate it as a secondary or "mid-card" title. Not even sure right now if it would be another title at all, but could be a once a year tournament or something. Odds are it will be a television title though as he spoke favorably about such in the past.

I wonder if the Jericho match stipulation is part of this eventual roll out. Not sure that would be a good idea to have Cody debut a new title because he can't go after the AEW title anymore, but OTOH having Cody really wanting this new prize now as supplement for not being able to have the main title could be seen as him putting this new title on par with Jericho's AEW title.

Interesting. Definitely feeling the ranking system. Seems like they are getting a lot of the formatting stuff from UFC and presentation stuff from NJPW, which I am not mad at.

Do you think it's a bit too early to roll out a mid-card belt for the men's division?

Talking about "a new prize" and not a new title belt makes me believe it might be a ring or other type trophy. Cody own Battlebowl and that was a Nov/Dec event IIRC.

Could they have a complete battlebowl in 2 hours? 8 lethal lottery tag matches means 32 wrestlers in "random" pairings. 8 matches even 10 minutes means 80 minutes and then you need time for the battle royale at the end to crown the winner.

Winning never went anywhere ie no earned title shot. Just something to add to a resume I guess, while the one-off tournament could be used to further or launch new storylines.

I wouldn't mind something have the winner earn a "ring", and have 2-3 other type tournament/matches throughout the year regularly whereby the winners then face off to earn a title shot at a regular PPV. Or a wrestler who can win all the rings (put their ring up against another winner's until they are united) then can cash them in for a world title shot on an announced Dynamite airing.

Maybe the prize will be their version of a MiTB. Some kind of match or competition where you earn a title shot.

I wouldn’t mind a midcard title either, though.

I really like the top 5 rankings idea. Probably going to need a good amount of effort put into them though because I can see them being scrutinized if they aren't consistent.

I'm probably in the minority, but I hate mid card titles. They seem like a lazy way to avoid booking story lines and I just never saw the value of a second tier title. I hope the "prize" will just be an annual tournament like Rey de Reyes from AAA. That is definitely something I could get behind.

Ranking systems in wrestling are constraining and unnecessary. They are making things harder for themselves. Better to feel a ranking system embedded in the culture of the program through good booking. They are going to get booked into corners and need to rush faster towards things like Jericho vs. Mox and heel/heel programs like Jericho vs. PAC.

The weekly prize will be something like “Match of the Week” or “Wrestler of the Week.”

With a proper rankings/ratings system there isn't a need for mid-card titles, as you can add match value and storyline out of rankings climbs and falls and winning steaks to crack the top five etc.

A mid card title is a crutch to not have to storyline for your midcard matches when they don't have any world title impact.

Cody has said he doesn't want a midcard title though - so any secondary title would be more on par with World Title - and to that I say, why so soon? I like the idea of a really exclusive World Title, maybe defended 4-5 times a year with the Champion fighting maybe 10 times a year total (not counting non-canon non-televised matches) so I could support a singles television title that would be defended once a month on television and on PPV's - so 17 matches vs 4-5 matches for the World Elite Championship.

Would a Television Title being defended every week be too much? Every two weeks or once a month on Dynamite be better? A 15 minute title match every week with a time limit going to judges sorta deal - wrestlers would want to win it for the television exposure and given it would be every week, there would be no real ranking system - anybody could get the shot that week which could lead to random, interesting matches.

I think every week would be a bit much though. At most every other week - so 26 defenses a year. Announce the next challenger during the off-week show, for a weeks build up.

I could see it being too gimmicky. Maybe once a month defense. With a Top 5 ranking play in each month cycle. 1 vs 4 first week, 2 v 3 second week, winner vs winner third week, winner vs TV Title Holder week 4.

The Men’s division was up first:

#1. Cody Rhodes
#2. PAC
#3. Hangman Adam Page
#4. Kenny Omega
#5. Jon Moxley

Tag Team division:

#1. The Lucha Bros.
#2. Private Party
#3. The Young Bucks
#4. Dark Order
#5. Best Friends

Women’s division:

#1. Emi Sakura
#2. Britt Baker
#3. Hikaru Shida
#4. Allie
#5. Nyla Rose
Seems to justify the PPV title matches more than anything. Women's division is a hot mess right now - can Emi really be #1 ranked? Allie ranked at all?

PAC vs Page being #2 and #3 basically makes the winner of that the defacto #1 contender. With Mox vs Omega unsanctioned either should move, maybe both jumping ahead of PAC/Page loser. Of course we'll have Dynamite wins and losses to further consider as well before the next World Title defense.

It should preferably be a title. Not a MitB or a title you can cash in. Let MJF or Joey be the first one to hold it.

I don't know of a wrestling promotion that featured a ranking system that lasted more than a month or two. Usually, it doesn't even last that long.

Allie has a positive win loss record overall irrc. Most of the women have losing records
