I thought this would be a great topic to discuss underrated heels from the WWE history, honestly one of the first that comes to mind for me is Sgt Slaughter, specially during his whole Wrestlemania VII stint he did alongside Hogan.

During this time Slaughter took on an incredibly risky role really, considering the time the gulf war was in full force, you have this American dude who is supporting Saddam Hussein and defacing Hogan's shirt by burning it live on TV (Slaughter was asked to deface the flag but felt he couldn't go that far so opted to burn Hogan's shirt instead, which as we know Hogan stood for America with his gimmick also), bare in mind that American people are very patriotic also and at this time, people didn't completely know how real wrestling was back then (of course they had an idea but it's not out there like it is now), it was an incredibly risky role for Sgt Slaughter to take on that he played with confidence and real well, something I feel he's under credited for way too much.

In the ring he wasn't bad either, I always thought Slaughter was immense at taking bumps (specially those corner turn buckle bumps) and he was pretty solid on the mic too, Slaughter is definitely one of the first heel wrestlers that come to mind for me who I feel is incredibly underrated.

What are your thoughts and who in WWE history do you feel is underrated?

I......R......S! I was a kid and obviously knew nothing of taxes but his voice, his stupid briefcase that at times he would use to win, his attire.......HATED HIM! I don't think he gets the recognition he deserves.

Paul Bearer. People mention him as one of the greatest managers of all time. But as a heel he was pretty damn good. Using his shoe to attack people during matches when the ref is distracted. Literally abandoning his son Kane and calling him stupid. And a bunch of other stuff that was gold.

Favorite moment was when he's cutting a promo with Taker after betraying Kane and JR says "He's your son for god sake, you rotund demon". Hilarious.

I agree about both of those, the Paul Bearer thing with the shoe reminded me of Fuji with his cane! ha :)

IRS is a good shout. He had no redeeming qualities. Hell, he even wrestled like an accountant!

My man Jacques Rougeau has to be up there. One of the all time great heels imo.

Honkytonk Man was a heat magnet.

Ludvig Borga just might be my favorite evil foreigner in wrestling history. He was like a wrestling version of Ivan Drago. Call me crazy, but I really think he could have been the mid-90s Brock Lesnar had he not got injured and pissed off a bunch of people.

Jacques Rougeau 100%!!!!!! I agree with Honky also, not sure about Borga, only saw his little run in WWE but would have to watch back on it again to see I think :)

I'd say Rick Martel also (obviously) which I do feel he's way underrated but at the same time, when he's mentioned people tend to speak really highly of him, I think it's more so the WWE that seem to underrate him really, though we'll see :)

Jerry fuckin' Lawler
Yep, I wish the younger crowd could see Lawler back when he was making kids cry, enraging mothers, making boyfriends jump from their seat wanting to fight him, and making the entire audience absolutely hate him in general. He was an epic troll back before trolls even existed.

All I remember/know of in regards to Lawler being a heel was when he was going at Bret Hart really, and things around that era, not sure if that was his peak or not but this is the heel Lawler I know :)

Arrogantly Grateful always steels my thunder! I opened this thread with the idea of enlightening all of you to the brilliance of Slaughter's heel turn. Ridiculous, dangerous heat. It was what they were going for and, if anything, it went over too well. Slaughter vs. Hogan is maybe my favorite Superhero vs. Super villian feud of all time. Either way, if I ever make my way over the Atlantic, I'm either putting Arrogantly in the figure four or drinking the night away with him talking about wrasslin'.

Haha, I do apologise lol ... but yeah, I absolutely agree about Slaughter here, the guy is completely underrated for what he did, don't get me wrong, so many heels are underrated but they were just that .... heels, Slaughter was a heel that took on much more than being just a heel, he pretty much took on what could have been a life threatening role, which I think did happen if I'm not mistaken.

Any other wrestler who has been a heel has just been a heel, which is no diss to them ... but it's nothing compared to the role that Sgt Slaughter took on, which is where I feel he is incredibly underrated here.

Oh yeah, and even before that, he carried an entire territory on his back as a babyface in Memphis. Lawler is underrated in general. It's shame he is so damn cheesy nowadays. I really wouldn't mind if he'd just retire, then Regal could replace him on commentary. Damn, that's such a good idea that I know for a fact WWE won't do it.

Yeah, I've heard quite often he was good at getting heat back in the day but like I mentioned above, I've only really seen him getting his teeth into this role during the whole Bret Hart rivalry, and I wasn't really impressed to be honest, I mean don't get me wrong, I never for a second thought he was bad, he was great at what he did but I never really thought it was outstanding or anything, just regular heel manoeuvres, which is why I asked above about when was his peak, he was obviously good because I've heard it so many times so I'm not going to ever discredit that, it's just from his Bret work and the amount of praise he's had, I don't really see it to the extent that's been put out there, which is why I think he's had much higher peaks than what he did during this point surely.

I'm not going back as far as you guys, but I do got a wacky one, that some may initially disagree with.... but I present...

THE MEAN STREET POSSE

No seriously though, I can't remember a group of guys that I enjoyed seeing get beat up as much, they drew heat without really even having to do anything crazy. I'm not over stating it either, like in this match:

The fans went nuts, the crowd comes out loving the APA even more... sounds crazy with such a simple concept but I thought it was hilarious watching these guys back in the day.
