In my opinion at the moment the WWE has too many similar characters and variations of the same character.

Most characters at the moment are way to similar, the entrances are basically run outs to rock music while they run out in different coloured trunks, this is fine having a few like this but they need to vary things.

At the moment there is Randy Orton, CM Punk, The Corre, The Nexus, The Miz, Alberto Del Rio, Ziggler, Chris Masters, Kozlov and probably about 15 more most with personality disorders of schizophrenia.

They need more characters like Late 90's early 00's they seemed to be able to create variations of characters with interesting styles, storyline's, gimmicks and entrances Mankind, The Undertaker, Masked Kane, Doink The Clown, Al Snow, Paul Bearer, Demolition Brothers, Gangrel, Ministry of Darkness, Viscera, Bam Bam Bigelow, Giant Gonzalez

Even legends like Hulk Hogan, Ultimate Warrior, Randy Savage, Brett Hart, Yokozuna had greatly differing attributes.

What has happened to WWE's creativity?
I guarantee if they had added a few more characters like this it would boost the ratings, merchandise, storyline's and crowd reactions.

I think this might be why crowd moral is at an all time low, because everything is way to similar.

Yeah, there's something in this. For too long male and female wrestlers have been moulded to a very narrow template. Male wrestlers must be bulked-up musclemen, with females must be bikini models with stick-insect physiques. The result has become way too predictable.

Hopefully the hiring of Sin Cara and Kong, both of whom differ significantly from the WWE cookie-cutter approach, is a step in the right direction. We'll see how far both can get...

Yes I was very happy with the capture of Sin Cara it was need to spice things up a little, TNA's suicide looks interesting never seen him wrestle but his entrances and style is different, apart from you would have to change his name from suicide.

give one of these new guys a gimmick and they can become a legend

They don't really do obvious gimmicks anymore.
Now they focus more on making the wrestler more 'normal' to connect with the crowd. And possibly focus on their personality

I think it is an attempt to make wrestlers look more believable, focusing more on the guy and less on the gimmick, a failure in my opinion, cause gimmicks are really more fun if not too much ridiculous.

So what if there isn't a pimp, a vampire or a guy with a mannequin head.
But they where all extremely popular when they where in the WWE, and you can't argue with that as these gimmicks do make a difference.

I also find it funny that you have left out the Mankind, Masked Kane, The Undertaker, Doink The clown, Ultimate Warrior etc basically a man with a mask who wears a sock on his hand, a guy in a red and black mask, someone who likes caskets, and two guys who wear face paint.

It isnt as simple as that they all varied greatly had different back stories, cliques, costumes, interesting entrances, creative story lines , rather than the same story line for every character.

Creativity is low and it needs improving on to show diversity and originality to stay ahead of the game and create a fresh and creative brand which is fastly becoming dull due to laziness.

"Too many similar characters" is way off. There are no characters anymore. That's the problem.

Yeah, a lot of boring "copies".
The themes should vary a LOT more.

Bingo. Hit the nail on the head.

Other than a few of the Main Eventers and lowercarders, no one has a character. You're either a smiling face with no personality, or an angry and/or arrogant heel with no personality. There's no rhyme, reason, or rhythm to what any one of these guys are doing. They simply are. Everyone is a vanilla, generic guy in black tights. Or, if you're a Diva, you just walk around and smile/scowl all day in colorful outfits. That's it. That's the problem right there.

You're talking as if wrestling is unique in this regard. Things have changed in society since the 80s and 90s. The general audience does not respond to over-the-top gimmicks/personalities/characters in the same way. Reality TV happened, TMZ happened, the internet happened, celebrity culture happened. People used to look up to stars and see them as role models, now they want to watch them go through rehab and laugh at every drunken tweet and embarrassing thing that happens in their lives. People want "real" now, or at least the version of "real" we get through modern media.

I love cartoonish, "larger than life" characters and I'm sure a lot of other fans do to, but that is no longer reflective of pop culture.

Hey, thats what you get with Florida CAW Wrestling. You get guys out of college in black trunks named "Tanner Brick" with Seether cover band entrance music and DDT and Fireman's Carry finishers. You know, because kayfabe is dead and nobody likes characters.
