The Rock took to Twitter this week and praised WWE Hall of Famer Steve Austin for being a "tough SOB" in the ring.

Responding to a tweet that marked the 20th anniversary of Austin's beer truck bath on Rock, Vince McMahon and Shane McMahon, Rock recalled their legendary WrestleMania 15 match, which saw Austin defeat The Rock for the WWE Title in a No DQ match that had WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley (Mankind) as the special referee.

Rock wrote, "My tough SOB brother @steveaustinBSR was operating here with a legit broken neck so we had to be creative with keeping our physicality to a minimum until our big WrestlemMania match. The result was one of the most entertaining segments to ever take place on LIVE TV."

That tweet led to Rock defending former WWE writer Vince Russo.

Former Empire of Soccer editor and wrestling fan David Martinez responded to the beer truck video and wrote, "You know, @THEVinceRusso catches a lot of crap, but segments like these are the ones that captured my imagination as a young fan and had me tuning in each and every week. The writing. The talent. What an amazing time to be a fan. Thanks to all involved!"

Rock responded to Martinez and said he had a great time working with Russo. Rock said, "Not sure why @THEVinceRusso would catch crap over this. I had a great time working with that guy. I had some crazy out of box ideas and never once did he bat an eyelash. He'd always say, "f--k yeah let's do it". And we did. And we killed. Always fun!"

I'm pretty sure Russo did come up with alot of good stuff back during his WWF tenure.
He's fucked his legacy with the shit he came up with in WCW and TNA though.
Legacy? :lmao

Old shit stain has no legacy. His crack pot ideas ar part of the reason this company is fucked now.

If russo had his way we'd have midgets beating off in garbage cans and dogs fucking each other. You've seen his work without the vince mcmahon filter. It's shit.

Awesome segment. Perhaps one of the best in Raw history.

Full clip:

Including brilliant top of the arena hardside camera which is barely, if at all, used anymore.

I'm not surprised The Rock praised Russo - he's always had a great relationship with the wrestlers he's worked creatively with. I think it's just the guys in the back who work in creative and others in office that probably dislike him. Both Austin and Foley have also praised him too. If you've seen the Beyond the Mat deleted scene with how Russo works with Foley on his Dude Love character, you can see why the wrestlers would like him and how he would highlight the characters strengths to hide the negatives.

Here's the clip if anyone hasn't seen it:

The Great One has spoken. Now watch people still try to hate on Russo even when the biggest star in all of entertainment has defended him.

WWE fanboys think Vince Mcmahon is the genius. The fact is all of his good ideas during the Attitude Era came from Russo or were copied from ECW. Vince's idea of what wrestling should be is the shitty PG era you've seen since 2009. If it was up to him The Rock would have always been Rocky Maivia.

Rock's persona much like Triple H Stone Colds and the majority of the personalities from the attitude era came from themselves not neither Vince.

Also we have minds of our own, just because someone says or thinks something doesn't mean anybody has to agree with it.

Pro Wrestling needs wacky ideas. In 20 years no one will remember that time Seth Rollins came out and cut another robotic promo, or that time Fin Balor cut another robotic promo, but in another 20 years time people will still remember the Beer Bath.

Read between the lines: “I came up with a lot of stuff.” Very cerebral way to be nice to the guy while subtly rejecting the suggestion that Russo was “behind” The Rock gimmick. The dude’s going to be President of the United States one day.

Whatever people think of Russo, he was part of a very successful era for the WWE. Did he come up with the Milk Bath idea for angle too, or was he gone by then?

People still remember stupid shit like Mae Young giving birth to a hand. Most people couldn't even tell you what happened on Raw this week because of how boring and uneventful it was.

With an over the top product some ideas will be great and some will be complete shit but you at least have SOME great moments. When you book a safe, overly scripted and politically correct product like WWE does right now you can satisfy sponsors but you put your viewers to sleep and the ones who don't fall asleep change the channel.

I love how apparently Vince Russo is the only guy capable of writing good shit because he did it 20 years ago. No, it's just that most good writers don't write for pro wrestling. They go for TV and Hollywood where they can make a lot more money.

So true.

Sure the wacky stuff will fall short from time to time, some wacky ideas will flop, but some will succeed.

I mean you look at things like the Beer Truck, or Kurt Angles Milk Truck, This Is Your Life with The Rock, or the whole Undertaker / Kane story. All wacky stuff, but all insanely good, and insanely memorable.

Whats memorable from this era? The closest thing we've had is Nia stiffing Becky and Becky's face being bloodied up as she kept doing her thing. But that was an accident, they don't book anything memorable anymore because everything is so sterile and forgettable. And to make it even worse when they do try and create a memorable moment they do so with the worst talents on the roster; the guys who lack personality.

Wrestling needs to stop trying to pretend it isn't a circus.

More hands, that shit was hilarious. Also love that it's always attributed to Russo, he was what 6 months gone from WWE by the time she gave birth to the hand? That's 100% a Vinny Mac idea.
