The Story:
The growing unrest created by lower than expected Wrestlemania paychecks and lack of direction for many young superstars created the perfect formula for a coup of World Wrestling Entertainment superstars and resurgence of the hybrid wrestling company, Major League Wrestling. MLW owner and former WWE Writer Court Bauer entered a fiscal alliance with multi-millionaire, Denver-based entrepenuer Howard Cooper. Mr. Cooper concocted a strategy based upon the premise that no current or past wrestling company provided its employees with financial security or healthcare, Cooper Enterprises created a liscensed worker union recognized in the United States of America designed specifically for those involved in the wrestling business. PWA (Professional Wrestlers Association) began to promote itself among World Wrestling Entertainment and TNA entertainers. The perfect storm began to brew in the locker rooms of the major wrestling promotions as well as independant promotions such as Ring of Honor.
Paul Levesque was the first to publicly respond to the outcry proclaiming, "World Wrestling Entertainment will not negotiate with the concept of wrestler unions. We do not believe this threat is legitimate and those that are loyal to our product will not consider the idea of signing with any kind of union".
Much to the angst of WWE, over 30 contracted superstars signed the union inquiry causing Vince McMahon and Board of Directors to negotiate with their employees offering some benefits being asked for as long as a union is not formed. The WWE Board of Directors also offered an exit for any employee who feels that the offer is not what they are looking for, allowing them to opt-out of their contract and join the PWA.
Rather than creating any public outcry, Dixie Carter and her staff immediately re-negotiated all contracts offering benefits comparable to what PWA was demanding. Dixie Carter's employees signed their new contracts aside from two who asked for their immediate release and were granted freedom to join PWA union. Other independant promotions would not negotiate with the thought of a union and did not have the assets to offer any sort of benefits. As such, many independant promotions lost contracts to wrestlers who joined the Professional Wrestlers Association.
Mr. Howard Cooper, President of the newly formed PWA, promised the workers that an organization was ready and willing to accomodate the contracts they deserve. This company has the financial backing to begin to tour North America immediately, a TV contract for a weekly television show, and open to possibilities of Pay Per Views. This organization has a history of success in the Wrestling business and have already began to construct a staff that will help create a competitive wrestling organization to conquer the monopoly of World Wresting Entertainment. Mr. Cooper, married to the daughter of Mr. Iger, CEO of Walt Disney and American Broadcast Company has secured a Friday Night 2-hour Primetime slot for a wrestling program.
Mr. Cooper and PWA introduced its employees to the company, Major League Wrestling. A hybrid wrestling organization known for its historic matches involving Mick Foley, Steve Corino and Terry Funk. Court Bauer immediately began to promote the resurgence of MLW online with Twitter, Wrestling Inc. and whoever would listen. Having already signed a contract to be represented from PWA, wrestlers could either chose to join MLW or remain unemployed until a company would be willing to accomodate union representation.
Court Bauer announced that on Monday, August 27, 2012 an online announcement will be made of staff, wrestlers and future tour dates of Major League Wrestling. He indicated he was confident that a mid-September launch is not only attainable but almost garunteed. Rumors began to run rampant online as to who Court Bauer has on his staff and which wrestlers have joined the new MLW. While some names are all but garunteed to be joining, it was impossible to tell who from WWE will defect to the MLW as Mr. McMahon and Mr. Levesque continue to negotiate furiously with the wrestlers threatening to leave even up to Sunday, August 26, 2012.
The stage is set for a new, yet legendary, name in wrestling to rise. Even with the whispers and label of "dirty politics" and many predicting a financial nightmare for Mr. Bauer and Mr. Cooper, there was a rising amount of interest and intrigue from wrestling fans who were waiting for something fresh.
On Saturday, August 25, 2012, TNA President Dixie Carter released an official statement on the TNA website:
"With open arms, we here at TNA, welcome Major League Wrestling back. Any competition that creates interest towards our industry will always result in good things across the board. We anticipate a good relationship with Court, MLW and wish James Storm and Brandon Silverstry the best of luck in their new endeavours."
