So I watched the first episode tonight, not expecting very much.

Yes, there was some slightly irreverent humor... and it didn't come off to me as being overly funny as a whole. But I was somewhat surprised by the seriousness that coasted along underneath the humor. In particular the tension between the captain and his XO. There were certainly jokes made at the expense of their previously failed marriage. I felt that it added something to the show, though.

It may or may not end up being a type of "Galaxy Quest" sort of show, but I think it deserves a few more looks. At least it is not "Family Guy" in space. That would have been a disaster.

Did anyone else watch this?

Any thoughts?

Sounds promising, I'll check it out tomorrow most likely.

I do know McFarlane was annoyed with fox promoting it as a comedy when you described it's genre better than them. He felt fox is setting them up to fail by drawing in people expecting FG in space while pushing away those that want a GQ type show with some moving plot points.

Seen clips. Looks promising. I agree way Fox are Promoting it. It gives the impression FG in Space. But it's not. That just wouldent work. It seems more genre bending then that. And their seems to be some interesting plot lines. Have to see the full episode some point. But can't find anywhere online to do so.

That's what I thought it was going to be, FG in space.

I'll watch it later, you made me interested.

Also Galaxy Quest had an interesting universe, sure it's Star Trekish but to me stood out a little more. Being like Galaxy Quest is a good thing!

Hmm. I don't know if I'm going to like this or not. The pilot episode did not overly wow me but did barely enough that I'll give it some more time. It felt and looked all a little too neat and a little too clean. I suppose the best thing is that it's not the FG in space some people feared it would be. I think the thing I liked the least about it is that it was too heavily influenced by Star Trek: TNG, from the uniforms to the characters to the captain's ready room to the bridge and even the music. Don't get me wrong, I love TNG but I don't need a clone of it. There was even a holodeck FFS. If they start doing wacky holodeck adventures then I am definitely out. It gets a meh and a maybe for now. If it's going to hold my attention, it's going to need to start breaking some of the molds established early on. There's some great sci-fi out there and I got no time for boring, cookie cutter shows.

Yeah, this show didn't blow me away, but it was so different from my expectations that I am intrigued. I think it definitely has potential.

I won't be too bothered if it ends up being a kind of Star Trek clone, as long as it doesn't get heavy handed and rely on TNG tropes and rehashed plotlines in every episode. I am going to hope for now that that is not the direction it will be headed. There will be some similarities... I just don't see a way to avoid them at this point. But if the show does set itself apart I will be happy with it.

Like others I intend to give it every chance to impress me. And I will walk away form it if it doesn't. :shrug

Just watched the first episode.

I mostly enjoyed it. Potential comes to mind. Hit and miss at times. It seems more genre familiar to a ST type clone yes. Kinda reminds me of a live action Futurama tbh. It's promising. I'm willing to give it time to develop. I think the most interesting aspect was the relationship between the captain and his XO. Potential their. Jokes made between them. It was actually more serious in tone than I expected. The way they were promoting it. Seemed more Family Guy in space. I'm so glad it's not. A lot of the characters are a bit too formulaic though. I found them amusing. Be interesting what direction they take them.

I agree at this stage it seems too clean. Borrowing from ST tropes too much. They well need to break away from them. To become it's own thing. Bit formulaic at this stage. I'm willing to give it another chance though. A lot of shows, even iconic ones. Started slow. If it becomes some sorta "Galaxy Quest" then I think it could be successful.

In terms of ratings. It did pretty solid. It got a 2.8 in demo. Tied with This is Us.

I kinda liked it.. It felt shorter than it's runtime which usually means I was immersed enough to block out everything around me.

Feels like something I could easily binge-watch. Some of the funnier moments had been done to death in the trailers which spoiled some of them, but that shouldn't be an issue from this point onwards.

Hopefully they can develop a more unique identity for it over time.

Seems like the kind of show that'd do relatively well in the 90's on cable but eh, i dunno if it will survive the current TV environment.

Found the bad CGI hard to ignore but I do like the cast.

The 2nd episode plot of an inexperienced officer being put in command during a time of crisis is more TNG clone-esque story telling. I think pretty much everyone on the Enterprise was put in the position of command at some point throughout the series. Humans being put in a zoo by a more advanced civilization isn't exactly a new idea either. What saved the episode for me was the part at the end with the reality TV shows. I got a good chuckle out of that.

I'm still pretty meh on the series. It's not completely awful but it's nothing really special either. I feel like this would be a good show to watch with the wife and kids if I was a family guy.

I did like it. I want to see where it's going.

The humor and the initial script was a little childish, but there's a lot of potential there because when it wanted to be serious, they got it right. The humor needs tweaking and seems forced at this point, but being a vanity project that was kind of expected.

Needs work and I wouldn't mind if they changed the tone of the show a little bit. Will watch the whole season. More interested in this than Discovery which just looks and sounds like complete and utter trash.

Loving this show. Fox stupidly advertised a Galaxy Wuest like spoof when this show is s lot like Chuck was for NBC: a clear nerd homage to something like Bond, but a flair of its own that showcased how much heart it had. In some ways, it reminds me a lot of Stargate and some Farscape as well.

And really, it is no surprise it feels like Trek and hits many of the same notes. He wanted to make an official Trek spin off for CBS. CBS wanted to make generic grimdark sci fi. I hope the success continues so Fox keeps with it. This is the kind of sci fi I have been missing since Eureka and Chuck went off the air. It's fun. Also loving how the characters act more normally and make references to pop culture that Star Trek was weirdly averse too. Can't wait to see this world reveal more.

Yet to see the second episode. I agree with the tone though. If they shift it to a more serious tone. I think it could develop. I love the cast. Perfectly casted. So I'll keep watching it. I also agree, the way Fox promoted it. Kinda of seemed detached once you watch it. I thought Family Guy in space. And I'm a huge Family Guy fan. But it just wouldent work in this format. Chuck is one of my all time fav shows. And it does have the same feel. Sci Fi Elements while poking fun. So interested to see how it evolves.

These elitest morons will never learn. I don't even know why they have jobs at this point.

Fox also had something like 8 million viewers tuning in to watch the opening episode.

I like it. Want to see where it goes as the writers get more comfortable with it.

I do see a problem though. A friend of mine who is a Family Guy fan watched and was disappointed it wasn't more of a comedy. Viewers tuning in may be expecting a tone similar to his previous work.
