For me the mid-card is divided between two types of wrestlers. Jobbers and wrestlers that are somewhat appreciated and taken seriously but no really given much of a chance. I just think the WWE mid-card is very underdeveloped, lacks credibility and a terriblly booked. Of course i'm sure i'm not the only one to say that, but my for me the problem is just getting even more frustrating. So I thought i'd make this thread to vent my anger on several issues.
Jobbers- It's ok to have jobbers, they're good for talent enhancement and for wrestlers who are only making their debut. But I find a lot of the mid-card are jobbers now. Curt Hawkin and Tyler Reks, JTG, Jack Swagger, Zack Ryder and many more. Now some of you might say, who cares about these guys they suck. But when a lot of the mid-card is made up of jobbers it makes the wrestlers who aren't jobbers look bad as well. Ryback doesn't look anymore credible going over Reks and Hawkins, then he should, and WWE will no doubt continue to feed Ryback jobbers until they find something else to do with him or give him a push. But when he does get pushed who will it be against? a mid-card heel who's only half as credible as he is like Damien Sandow because let's be fair. All he does is go over jobbers as well. He can carry himself on the mic and seems to show promise as a future main eventer. But it takes more then beating jobbers all the time to make future stars. Again as I said, I reckon half the WWE mid-card is made up of jobbers. The other half is made up of Tag Teams and solo competitors that WWE shows interest in.
Credibility - As I said, beating a jobber doesn't give someone any credibility. If you're a jobber you have zero credibility what so ever. So getting credibility lies in a wrestler's own talent and ability to become credible, or WWE booking a mid-carder in a feud with another mid-carder on his level. But the problem is as I said above, WWE doesn't really give mid-carders that much of a chance, and what I mean by that. They don't give mid-carders much of a platform. Some wrestlers in the mid-card might get mic time like Damien Sandow, or The Miz. But ultimately promos and mic time is really only designated to main eventers because WWE focuses all their attention on the main event scene. So if a wrestler doesn't get much mic time then the only other way to make a wrestler credible is a proper mid-card feud. But what mid-card feud have we got right now. Damien Sandow/Brodus Clay and Antonio Cesaro/Santino. Sandow/Clay is being built up right now but who will benefit from it and what happens after that. Who will they feud with next? Cesaro/Santino isn't even a feud in my opinion. Cesaro will beat Santino because Santino is a jobber as well and will lose to the title to Cesaro. What happens for Cesaro after that though. We all know the US title is horribly booked already, but who will Cesaro face after that and will he defend it regularly? My point being, with lack of emphasis on WWE's mid-card. It just looks shit and the mid-carders have very little credibility as well.
Championships- Everyone says it and I think everyone agrees. Mid-card titles are shit. Some might say that winning a mid-card title means nothing in this day and age, however in the past being a champion actually meant something. If you were an I.C champion it was said that the WWE is watching you closely because it was seen as a stepping stone title. But that's non existent anymore since the Money in the Bank came along and gave wrestlers a different way to step up to the main event. But it's not the same it's not right because when a mid-carder gets pushed with a MITB win he doesn't look like a threat to the WWE or WH Champions, he looks like an undeserving champion who can only win the title by getting a sneak win. Anyway getting back to my point. Besides the I.C title, you also had the tag team titles as well, which also made a wrestler look good. Hell holding the United States championship in the past was pretty cool as well. But not anymore because WWE doesn't put emphasis on the titles anymore.
Booking - WWE's booking is shit overall. But you can bet if it's bad for the main event, it's much worse for the mid-card. I've already talked about jobbers, credibility and mid-card titles, and I think everything can be attributed to the booking of the mid-card(Obviously). In the old days, WWE used to have a strong mid-card. You could be happy watching mid-carders like Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Rikishi and William Regal because they were great for wrestling but they were also utilized as well. You could believe any of them could take on a main eventer and win. Hell I always got a kick out of watching lesser mid-carders like Steve Blackman, The Godfather and the members of Right To Censor because they had characters and gimmicks and you could still believe they could go over other wrestlers, and not just jobbers like they probably would be in today's WWE. They also had a strong tag team division to keep things in top shape. Today's tag team divsion sucks, and even though people say WWE is starting to focus more on the tag division, unless they go back to the way things were when you had the likes of Edge & Christian, The Hardyz, the Dudleyz, APA etc. I don't think it will be the same again. Forget about the women's division, the days of actually caring about the WWE divas(for those who actually liked the women's division) are gone. But I think i've made my point, WWE books their mid-card like it's nothing anymore, and except for a few selected mid-carders, a lot of these are about as relevant as a jobber.
Here's one more thing i'd like to say before I end this rant. If you want want to look at things from another perspective. A football team's offence is only good when they have a strong defense to back them up, it's all about team work. Mid-carders are WWE's defense, while main eventers are their offence. WWE needs a strong mid-card because it hurts the main event scene just as much as it does the mid-card, and that hurts the entire company overall. Fuck it, it hurts the business. But that's something I wanted to get off my shirt anyway, even though it wont change how things are in the WWE.
