Anyone have a particular moment(s) in their gaming lives where they were just amazed at what they were seeing/playing?

Mine would be going from the SNES to the Sega Saturn and playing Virtua Fighter 2 and SEGA Rally. 3D graphics, gameplay and OST for both was just amazing!

VF2 was a big change going from Street Fighter 2. Being able to side step and move around your opponent made for a challenging game. Also graphically it was really good at the time. It's also where I found my favourite fighter from any beatem' up, Shun Di - The Drunken Master. His stage as well was awesome especially the arcade version with the bridge which would cast a shadow on the fighters. Sadly it was missing from the Saturn version. :(

My Shun Di art.

Going from Mario Kart to SEGA Rally was a big jump even though they are two very different games. Like VF2 it was amazing in all areas even with the terrible pop up in the background and I spent ages trying to best my times on all the tracks.

The OST is awesome! :grin2:

My SEGA Rally art.

After that I'd say FF7 was a jaw dropper in both gameplay/graphics and PGR3 seriously made me fall back into gaming again.

How about you guys? Any cool moments that left an impression on you? :)

You really should have given a maximum amount or else posters could write a novel about it. I'll pick 3.

1) Zelda Ocarina of Time --> Walking out into Hyrule and seeing the huge land. That was unbelievable. I never imagined a game with that much content, graphics, interactions with characters, side quests, etc. I still feel that size was perfect.

2) Metal Gear Solid --> When Meryl gets sniped and you have to leave her behind.

3) Goldeneye (N64) - Fighting Odd Job

This would be my answer too. I remember playing it the first time and just being wowed by how vast the world looked.

Its funny because my initial impression of the game was disappointment as I found the Kokiri Forest and Deku Tree dungeon to be mundane and limiting. And then like stepping out of Plato's cave, I saw the huge and expanded world of Hyrule for the first time and I was like "Holy God!". I almost didn't know where to go from there. I kind of just wanted to walk around and explore everything.

Another one was a bit more obscure and a little sillier.

So I played The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse on SNES. It was a Capcom game and actually quite good if IIRC. My big wow moment came at the very end. So I knew Pete was the last boss in the game, and I got through everything without too much trouble. I was at the end and I was just ready to fight Pete and wrap the game up...

And I go into face Pete and he's a King Kong sized giant! I was like...oh shit. I was not ready for this!

Granted I was 8 and maybe a little cocky by that point, but I still remember how shocked I was as I did not expect to be fighting a giant sized Pete.

Another vote for Ocarina of Time. Spent way too much time with that game.

Also spent a lot of time playing Goldeneye and No Mercy on N64. Many late nights in middle / high school playing this with my friends.

Seeing Mario 64 for the first time. Going from NES and SNES to fucking 3D Mario in an open world environment was incredible. These days we just get graphical upgrades and no real major innovations like that. Not even VR has impressed me. Motion controls with the Wii were a cool novelty when it was first released, but nothing like that jump from 2D to 3D.

When I left midgar in ff7. Had never played an rpg and I couldn't believe the scale of the game at that point. First time I was really blown away.

Desert strike was close just because it looked so Damn good for the time.

Yeah, me too. Generally, the leap from SNES to N64/PS1 game sizes was my first real wow moment in gaming.

Midgar felt like the longest game ever for a 10 year old. Then leaving. Later getting an airship.....

Changing discs, too. In both Metal Gear Solid 1 and FF7.

For me, it was playing Twisted Metal the first time on the PS1. SNES to PS1 was such a huge jump. The FMV cut scenes in Warhawk were pretty sweet too. Also, I was a huge fan of the first Need for Speed. Finally a racing game that was actually like driving a car.

Nice thread.

There are so many, but for me these spring to mind as three of the great story moments;

Walking into the library is something I will never forget. Chills thinking about it.

Yes I'm going there. Despite the criticism, the build to the ending is superb. The charge to the beam and the conversation with The Illusive Man and Anderson rank with anything else I've played.
The way this game build and builds makes it hard to pick a moment. It would either be the realisation of what you did with the white phosphorus or the ending. Unlike ME3, whichever option you choose you get a distinct ending. Seeing Walker in Konrads clothing was a symbol to show just how far you and Walker have gone.

Bit different to the other three and in some ways the best.
One of the greatest games ever. If you have played it, you know what I'm talking about. When you see "it" for the first time ranks up there as one my favourite gaming moments.

God of War - So many, but the scene with the world serpent stands out. The point at which I realised the entire game as a single shot would be up there

Red Dead Redemption - The first horse ride into the sunset

Mass Effect 3 - The final scene on Tuchunka, however you play it

Escaping Monster Ock in Spider-Man :maury :maury :maury :maury

Ravenholm level in Half Life 2

Battling Phalanx in Shadow of the Colossus

Madden 05's franchise mode (which has to be time-adjusted to fully appreciate it)

"After you walk into a village and you see 50 children, all sitting neatly in a row, against a church wall, each with their throats cut and their hands chopped off, you realize that the creature that could do this doesn't have a soul."- Niko Bellic in GTA IV (the grim philosophical value that Nietzsche would crack a haphazard smile at being in a video game always struck me. It also encapsulates the darkness that GTA IV has that is so starkly contrasts from the presentation of all the other GTAs).

Riding into Mexico and the death of John Martson in RDR1

As a lifelong Batman mark, The Scarecrow portion of Akrham Asylum (Killer Croc's boss fight stands out too)

Similarly but simpler: gliding through the skyline in Arkham City

The Bloody Baron quest in Witcher 3

The camp party when Sean is returned, Blood Feuds, Ancient and Minor (which feels equally at home on the silver screen) and Arthur's last ride in RDR2

Many have mentioned different ME3 moments and I agree with them, but I would also add the whole Citadel DLC. Really nice and touching farewell to all members of team Normandy.

Being a child I didnt have Play Station so I only played it at my brothers place once in two month and he had that game called Road Rash Jailbreak on PS1. What a game that was! We could spend the whole day playing it w/o a break.

Halo Reach Long Night of Solace - when you board the Covenant Corvette and see the Savannah getting blown up outside and know you are up shit creek without a paddle

Halo Reach is one of my favourite games of all time and watching your escort get blown up and that melancholy music kicks in with Colonel Holland over the radio says you are "Noble, you're in deep with no cover"...gives me chills just thinking about that bit

I could mention loads more moments from Halo but won't turn it into a Halo fanboy list post

Outside of that I agree with others about walking out in Hyrule Field for the first time. I know some people love Mario 64 for the same reason of the jump into 3D but I played Zelda Ocarina before I played Mario 64 so M64 never had that impact on me that it had on others

God of War 3 - the whole game had me with my jaw on the floor. From that absolutely amazing opening scene climbing Mount Olympus to fighting a Titan as an ant vs a giant. That game had so many adrenaline fueled moments that were just crazy (why I don't like the massively toned down reboot)

More the better I say. :grin2:

I forgot to add Resident Evil 1 on the PS1. The creepiness and long instances of quietness scarred the demon out of me but also made me amazed at how atmospheric the game is.

Also I'll always remember "I hope this is not Chris's blood!". That was a WOW such bad delivery type of moment. :p
