Jessica Chastain in Talks to Star in ‘It’ Sequel (EXCLUSIVE)

Jessica Chastain is in negotiations to star in New Line’s “It” sequel as the adult version of Beverly, sources tell Variety.

Director Andy Muschietti is back to direct. Gary Dauberman will pen the script. Beverly was played by Sophia Lillis in the 2017 horror hit.

Sources stress that negotiations are early and that the script is still being worked on, but both sides have officially begun discussing her coming on to the project. Bill Skarsgard is also expected to return as Pennywise. The sequel will bow on Sept. 6, 2019, with production expected to start this summer.

Chastain has been linked to the sequel for some time following its monster opening weekend, as the Muschiettis mentioned her in an interview with Variety as a top choice to play adult Beverly in the sequel. Rumors even surfaced of a post-credits scene in which Chastain could have made a cameo, though that never came to fruition.

Another layer to the rumors: Chastain has worked with Muschietti before, having starred in his first studio hit, “Mama.”

Despite the speculation, New Line and Chastain had not been in official talks until recent weeks. The studio sees the “It” sequel as a big priority, however, as it was one of the top movies of 2017 and became the largest-grossing horror film of all time.

“Chapter One” of “It” followed the first half of Stephen King’s eponymous novel, telling the story of a group of children who are terrorized by Pennywise the Clown and forced to face their own demons to defeat him. “Chapter Two” will follow the last half of the novel, when the characters return to their hometown years later as adults to face Pennywise once again. Chastain would be the first big star attached to the sequel, though the Muschiettis have said that they would hope to bring back the original young stars for flashback scenes.

Chastain is coming off a Golden Globe-nominated performance in “Molly’s Game,” and is expected to star in “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” later this year. She also recently became attached to a Universal comedy opposite Octavia Spencer. She is repped by CAA and Mosaic.
I'm a little disappointed. Watching the first one I kept thinking how great Amy Adams would be as adult Bev. It's not just that she looks similar to young Bev. I think she can give the same vulnerability and strength that Sophia Lillis had. Not that I don't like Chastain, I just think Adams is better for the part.

I'd cast Seth Green to play adult Richie since he played young Richie in the TV version.

Bill Hader as Richie, or no buys.

Just wait 15 years until Sophia Lillis is 31. Problem solved.

It's no secret that I am madly in love with Jessica Chastain so of course I am delighted with this news! It's also nice to see fan casting coming to fruition for a change.

It's not going to be easy to match the last movie. The cast was fantastic and the story worked so well because the protagonists were kids. It won't be easy to recapture that magic with a cast of adults.

Though I think the kids are still going to have some role in the movie through flashbacks.

James McAvoy, Bill Hader in Talks to Star in 'It: Chapter Two'

James McAvoy and Bill Hader are in negotiations to join Jessica Chastain in It: Chapter Two.

The second installment of New Line’s adaptation of Stephen King’s It focuses on the adult versions of the characters that were subjected to the terror of demon clown Pennywise, last seen in the 2017 movie that grossed $700 million worldwide.

If the deals are made, McAvoy would play the role of the adult Bill Denbrough, the unofficial leader of the group of kids nicknamed the Losers Club, who grows up to be a successful author. When he returns to face his past, his old stutter resurfaces. Jaeden Lieberher played the character in the first movie. Hader would play the adult Richie Tozier, the jokester who grows up to be a DJ. Finn Wolfhard played the character in the first installment.

Chastain is already on board to play Beverly Marsh, the group’s lone female member who as an adult ends up in an abusive marriage. Bill Skarsgard will return as Pennywise.

The kid actors from the movie, Lieberher and Wolfhard among them, are expected to return for the second chapter in flashback scenes.

It: Chapter Two is scheduled to begin production in July and is set to be released in theaters by Warner Bros. on Sept. 6, 2019.

Andy Muschietti and Gary Dauberman are back as director and screenwriter, respectively.

Barbara Muschietti, Dan Lin and Roy Lee are producing. Executive producing are Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg.

McAvoy last year starred in the hit horror movie Split and appeared with Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde. The actor, repped by UTA and United Agents, next stars in X-Men: Dark Phoenix and the Split follow-up Glass.

Former Saturday Night Live castmember Hader currently stars in HBO’s Barry, a dark comedy about a hitman moving through Los Angeles' acting classes scene. The show has received rave reviews and was just renewed for a second season. Hader is repped by UTA.

Jessica Chastain is cancer to any movie. Wish Hollywood studios would tell her overrated bitter ass to take a hike.

From what it appears to be Chastain is confirmed now as the Adult Bev with James Mcavoy and Bill Hader signed up for roles in the film. I know most people had their hearts set on Amy Adams , who would of been a decent choice to. I know a lot of people want Chris Pratt in this film to

Amy Adams was amazing in Arrival but I really liked Jessica Chastain in Mama, it should be good considering it's the same director.

As for Pratt, I feel like he's too "big" for this film. I mean now he's used to blockbusters and looks the part for them. Take someone more "grounded" for this, like Anson Mount.

Well McAvoy needs something to do, now he can't sit in a wheelchair for months on end.

I wish It had been better. The first half hour is rather strong but it gradually dissipates in intensity. Showing the "monster" too frequently is often a difficult hurdle to overcome in horror, and the over-reliance on jump scares dilutes the film of its possible impact.

It failed as a horror film because of those reasons. But I thought it was a good coming of age drama.

Agreed.

And Sophia Lillis seems like a new star fully formed.
