Jim Carrey in Talks to Play Villain in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie

Jim Carrey is in final negotiations to join James Marsden in Paramount Pictures’ “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie.

Jeff Fowler, who received an Oscar nomination for his 2005 animated short “Gopher Broke,” is helming the movie, which will blend live-action and CG elements. Neal H. Moritz is producing with “Deadpool” director Tim Miller executive producing, along with Toby Ascher.

Tika Sumpter is also starring in the film. Carrey will play Robotnik, a mad scientist and Sonic’s archenemy. Carrey starred in a similar film with 1994’s “The Mask,” which mixed his comedic performance with CGI.

Paramount has given “Sonic the Hedgehog” a holiday-season release for Nov. 15, 2019. The project, based on the Sega video game franchise, had been in the works at Sony, but the studio let its film rights lapse and Paramount picked up the project in October. Sega launched the Sonic game in 1991 and has sold more than 360 million copies to date, including both packaged and digital games on consoles, tablets, and mobile.

The game features a blue hedgehog named Sonic whose peaceful life is often interrupted by Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist who is trying to conquer the world, and by Doctor Robotnik, another scientist who has imprisoned animals in robots and stolen magical Chaos Emeralds. The game was enormously successful and established the Sega Genesis console as a major player in the video game industry.

Carrey has been exec producing the Showtime series “I’m Dying Up Here.” He is also exec producing and starring in Showtime’s “Kidding,” which premieres in September. Carrey is represented by WME and attorney Deborah Klein. The news was first reported by Deadline.

James Marsden to Star in ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ Movie (EXCLUSIVE)

“Westworld’s” James Marsden will star in Paramount’s live-action/animation hybrid movie “Sonic the Hedgehog,” an adaptation of the classic video game, sources tell Variety.

The studio landed the film rights to the classic game in 2017 and tapped Jeff Fowler to direct.

Neal H. Moritz, who recently signed a first-look deal with Paramount, is producing under his Original Film banner. “Deadpool” director Tim Miller will serve as executive producer, along with Toby Ascher. Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons will co-produce.

Sega launched the Sonic game in 1991 and has sold more than 360 million copies to date, including both packaged and digital games on consoles, tablets, and mobile.

The game features a hedgehog named Sonic on a quest to defeat Doctor Robotnik, a scientist who has imprisoned animals in robots and stolen magical Chaos Emeralds.

The movie is set to bow on Nov. 15, 2019. The film marks the first time that Sonic has ever been adapted for the big screen.

Marsden can currently be seen as Teddy on HBO’s “Westworld,” which is in its second season and continues to be one of the network’s most popular shows. Marsden is also active on the film front, having most recently appeared in Rob Reiner’s “Shock and Awe.”

...During the discussion, Moritz shared with the audience how he sold Gianopulos on making an animated version of Sonic, a classic Sega video game character. The Paramount boss was well aware of the fact that video games don’t translate successfully to film, but there was a hook, and Moritz made a short clip to show exactly what the tone and theme would be for the furry blue character.

Gianopulos was sold on Sonic‘s story. “He’s a juvenile delinquent on the adventures in a pretty straight rural environment with a local policeman. It was instantly engaging and it was good enough where you could see where it’s going,”

]Moritz continued, “What we’re trying to do with Sonic is make a movie about a small-town police officer and Sonic at a time when they are both desperately in need of a friend, and we hope that this theme is friendship is what gives the film its heart and makes it prosper.”

Carrey is pretty good casting for Robotnik. Making it a delinquent buddy cop movie is really weird though. Almost sounds like Sonic meets Zootopia/Roger Rabbit.

To be fair Forces being just ok at best and Boom rise of lyric being....Boom rise of lyric already put a massive dent in that comeback :side:

But yeah looking at this I am at best weirded out. Carrey works for robotnik I suppose but the rest of this looks questionable at best but I guess I can hope it's a relatively entertaining movie even if it has no chance of setting the world on fire or anything.

I have no interest in this never being a big Sonic fans, but is anyone that is a Sonic fan really wanting this either?
NOPE!

I'm a fan of most of the games released from 1991 to 2005, plus Sonic Generations & Sonic Mania.

Jim Carrey is the man though, so I wanna see how he appears.

Well my expectations aren't high but I always felt Sonic "bad rep" in video games to be highly exaggerated. Most of his games are pretty goof with a few bad seeds like Sonic 06, Sonic Boom Rise of Lyric, Sonic Forces, and the two Wii games.

How the heck is Jim Carrey going to play Robotnik? What a bizarre casting choice. Huge Sonic fan, but this is going to suck so much donkey dick...

It can't be worse than the Super Mario live action movie.
That movie was actually one of my guilty pleasures when I was little, then I grew up and tried watching it again :WTF2

If they call Robotnik Eggman yet again though :imout

Ben Schwartz to Voice ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ in Upcoming Movie (EXCLUSIVE)

Ben Schwartz has been tapped to voice the title character in Paramount Pictures’ “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie, sources tell Variety.

James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey will also star in the live-action hybrid.

Schwartz is no stranger to voicing classic characters. He’s currently Dewey Duck on Disney Channel’s reboot of “Duck Tales” and will voice Leonardo in Nickelodeon’s “Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” On the film side, Schwartz was most recently seen in “Blue Iguana,” and will appear next in the Kevin Hart-Tiffany Haddish comedy “Night School” and also has a new James Corden produced Showtime series where he will star opposite Jillian Bell.
