The Go-Home Show to 1997 Survivor Series:

Overview: We are just 6 days away from the Survivor Series in which Shawn will get a title shot vs. Bret Hart in Montreal, Canada! With one show to go before that PPV, Shawn and DX cut a promo, and Shawn takes on Ken Shamrock in the main event of tonight's RAW.

Review: The first mention of the upcoming Shawn/Bret match in 6 days is a GREAT video-package highlighting the Shawn/Bret rivalry over the past couple of years. Even back in these days, WWE's video-packages were second to none just like they are today. This isn't the great quality video, this is the video-package that they aired:

Later on in the show; Michael Cole conducts an in-ring interview with Shawn and DX. Shawn takes off his sunglasses to start the interview:

Shawn gets 'Shawn is gay' chants and proceeds to kiss HHH and then Chyna to fuck with the fans:

Triple H then takes the mic and says Cole has talked enough. HHH shakes Cole's hand, and then pushes him down:

Shawn takes the mic and says he is the showstopper, the icon, the main event of the WWF that can go. But from now one he'll always be known as the "Wrestling God" before HHH takes the mic and says he knows where Shawn was going with that and Shawn begins to play the guitar with the European Title. HHH then goes on about how old Hogan is. Shawn says at Survivor Series he'll show Bret that he is indeed the man.

Shawn says next week he is going to come here and 'walk naked.' And then he is going to take Shamrock and show him the world's most dangerous man and does a crotch-chop. HHH calls out Sgt. Slaughter to make that match official.

Out comes Sarge. Shawn and HHH put on windshield wiper masks to protect from Sarge's spit when he talks:

Sarge makes the Shawn/Shamrock match for TONIGHT!:

Match: Shamrock jumps Shawn during his entrance to get a quick advantage! Shamrock Gorilla Press Slams Shawn out of the ring and onto DX. Shawn finally gets a chance to take off his entrance gear outside of the ring and regroups. Shamrock slams Shawn's and HHH's heads into eachother. Shamrock hip-tosses Shawn back in the ring, but with his hair!

Back in the ring, Ken works Shawn over in the corner and goes for a belly to belly, but Shawn counters with an eye-poke. Shamrock hits a Perfect-Plex on Shawn for a two count. Shamrock sloppily hip-tosses Shawn down and you can see Shawn smile and laugh in Vince's direction. Ken clotheslines Shawn out of the ring. Ken throws Shawn into the ring-post, but Chyna does the same to Ken! Out comes Rick Rude as we go to commercial..

Back from commercial, HHH is pounding away on Ken, before he throws him back in the ring. Shawn hits his patented stomp to the face and two leg-drops to boot. Ken hits a crossbody for a two count, but Shawn is back up and hits him with a hard clothesline, also good for a two count.

Shamrock works out of a chin-lock, and rolls up Shawn for a two count. Shawn hits a beautiful drop-kick right on Ken's face. Shawn goes shoulder-first into the ring-post. Ken hits Shawn with a running elbow and a spinning-heel-kick. Ken goes for a hurricarrana, but Shawn hits a sit-out powerbomb for a two count! Shawn tunes up the band, but Ken ducks and hits him with a belly to belly! Ken puts Shawn in the ankle-lock, but Chyna distracts the ref, and Rude hits Ken with his briefcase. Match ends in a DQ. HHH Pedigrees Ken on the briefcase as RAW comes to an end.

Analysis: Surprised Bret didn't come out at the end there since this was the go-home show to the Shawn/Bret match. Good promo and match, but not much in the build of Shawn/Bret. At the same time, it's Shawn/Bret. By late 1997, we all very much knew what their deal was; that they hated eachother, why they hated eachother, and all of that good stuff.

31 years ago tonight (11/3/91); The Rockers took on The Natural Disasters:

25 years ago tonight on RAW (11/3/97); Shawn took on Ken Shamrock in the main-event:

19 years ago tonight on RAW (11/3/03); Shawn took on Mark Henry:

14 years ago tonight on RAW (11/3/08); Shawn and HHH took on John Morrison and Miz. Match starts at the 10:25 mark. Before that is a pre-match DX interview:

I will not criticize Shawn for this match. He made like $3 million for it. For all the money he lost out on during the Attitude Era, he deserved that payoff!
Absolutely. Just watched it last night, and despite the fact that Shawn hadn't wrestled in alot longer time period than any of the three other guys in the match, he wrestled the best out of all 4 of them and it wasn't even close. That's also with his partner getting seriously injured like 3 minutes into a 30 minute match meaning Shawn probably wrestled alot more in that match than was originally planned going into it.

25 Years Ago Tonight:
1997 Survivor Series
"The Montreal Screwjob"

Overview: Here we are the big Shawn/Bret showdown for the Title! What happens tonight will have gigantic ramifications, not just for Bret, not just for Shawn, but for the entire wrestling business from this night forward. Literally, everything in wrestling changes forever on this night. And not just in wrestling, but in the lives of three men (Bret, Vince, and Shawn) forever.

Review:

Before the match, Bret is in the ring during his entrance and Shawn is on the outside waiting for the match to start and the camera zooms in on an over the top sarcastic smile on his part, as if to say, some big shit is going down tonight:

Shawn in the ring, and he jumps Bret to get a head start, before Bret starts to fight back:

Bret then head-butts Shawn, and hits him with a hard clothesline over the top and to the outside to a big pop:

Bret has the upper-hand as they brawl on the outside. An Attitude Era staple hear as Bret throws Shawn over the guardrail, and they brawl more. You can tell they are trying to go further up in the crowd, but there are just too many people in the way, so they go back over the guardrail back ringside. Shawn gets the upper-hand now as he slams Bret's head against the announce table. Shawn takes an American flag and chokes Bret with it.

Shawn throws Bret over the guardrail as he slams Bret's head against the guardrail. He tries to piledrive Bret, but Bret back-body-drops Shawn over the guardrail and then proceeds to kick Shawn in the nuts as they are back ringside. They continue to brawl up the ramp, where Bret once again counters a piledriver and back-body-drops Shawn on the concrete, and follows that up with a vertical suplex on the concrete. Shawn bumping like a madman on the concrete tonight!

They continue to brawl up the ramp as they are surrounded by numerous refs and backstage officials trying to get them back to the ring, as the bell hasn't rung and the match hasn't officially started yet. They brawl in the entrance box thing where the wrestlers enter, where Vince gets in Bret's face and tries to get him to stop:

They now work their way back to the ring, slowly, but surely, as they continue to brawl on the outside. They are now in the ring and the bell rings as Bret chokes Shawn with a Quebec flag. Bret hits Shawn with an atomic drop. Shawn hits his patented flying-forearm on Bret and gets to work on him alittle bit with some offense of his own. He hits his patented stomp on the face, and the chokes Bret with the Quebec flag that Bret just choked him with, and crotch-chops the crowd.

Shawn is playing to the front-row of the crowd which looks like a bunch of frat guys and throws Bret out of the ring right in front of those guys, and punches Bret right in the face, and laughs in their faces. Hilarious. Shawn then breaks the pole of a Canadian flag in half and jams the end of the pole into Bret's throat!

Back in the ring, Shawn hits Bret with an axe-handle off the top. Bret goes back on offense, but Shawn pokes him in the eye. Shawn hits Bret with a crossbody from the top, but Bret reverses it into a pin for a 2 count. Bret puts Shawn in the figure-four around the ring-post to a big pop. Bret continues to loosen up Shawn's legs by focusing entirely on his legs now. He then puts Shawn in a Figure-Four! Shawn eventually reverses it, but Bret gets to the ropes almost immediately to break the hold.

Bret hits Shawn with a Russian-Leg-Sweep for a two count. He head-butts Shawn's abdomen before hitting him with a vertical suplex for a two count. Bret hits Shawn with back-breaker. He then goes to the top rope, but the ref gets in the way, and all three men go down hard:

They get up, Shawn gouges Bret's eye and puts him in Bret's very own Sharpshooter! The ref (Earl Hebner) gets up and calls for the bell to be rang!:

The bell ring, and Shawn apparently wins the match. Bret turns around, and can't believe it:

Bret gets up and spits in Vince's eye:

Analysis: Well, there it is. The most controversial match and finish of all time. After this, Bret would head to WCW and Shawn would be the WWF World Champion, and the wrestling world would never, ever be the same.

The RAW after Montreal:

Overview: We are one night removed from the Montreal Screwjob and RAW is STILL in Canada. Tonight, we get the fallout from that match and see who Shawn's next opponent will be as the new World Champion.

Review: DX opens the show. This is the debut of the DX theme song and Titan-Tron video as they get massive heat from the Canadian crowd. Rick Rude talks as Shawn flashes his new Gold Watch:

Shawn says DX is on top of the world. He says he thought about being politically correct, but since someone else drew first blood; he is now gonna unload on everybody. Shawn says beat Bret in his home country, in his own finishing hold, and he is the new Champion, and if you thought DX was hell to deal with before, you have seen absolutely nothing yet. The WWF wasn't big enough for him and Bret, so he put the Sharpshooter on him and he ran his ass down south with the rest of those dinosaurs. He says the guys who aren't dinosaurs down there are his friends, and they're gonna beat the hell out of him one day. Shawn says he is the only man who will ever be number one in the business, not Bret, Hogan, or Savage, has the WILL to be the BEST, and Shawn will outwill all of them because he has something the rest of you will never ever have, that is 'God-given, pure, natural, talent.' Shawn says he's willing to be a fighting Champion. Shawn says he would never beat up a 52 year old man as Ken Shamrock's theme hits:

Shawn says he's gonna give Ken the mic, and he'd like Ken to try to put a couple words together and form a sentence. Ken says DX is a disgrace to the human race. Ken calls Chyna a male or female or whatever you want to call yourself and HHH flips him off. That seemed real:

Shamrock challenges Shawn now. Ken calls Rude an 'old man.' Ken says he's gonna punch a hole right in Shawn's chest:

Shawn takes the mic from Ken. Shawn says Chyna would knock Ken out anyday of the week. He says Rude will knock him the hell out. He says HHH could beat him anywhere, anytime. Out comes Sgt. Slaughter..

Slaughter says Shawn has a Title match scheduled against Shamrock. Shawn says he just beat a man who's a legend in his own mind and ran him out of the WWF last night. Slaughter says HHH will wrestle Shamrock tonight. Slaughter says he will be sitting at ringside and DX is banned from ringside.

Analysis: The crowd was rightfully HEATED tonight, especially when it came to DX segments. This would start a new era in WWE, and the Attitude Era was in full force. Good beginning to the Shawn/Shamrock feud, too.

25 years ago tonight at an MSG House Show (11/15/97); just 6 days after the Montreal Screwjob; Shawn defended the World Title in a match against the Brooklyn Brawler. How did that happen? The last time WWE held a House Show at MSG a couple of months earlier; they had a Battle Royal and the winner would get a Title shot against the Champion the next time they were at MSG, and the Brawler won, haha:

19 years ago tonight at Survivor Series 2003; Team Austin (HBK, Booker T, RVD, and The Dudley's) took on Team Bischoff (Jericho, Christian, Mark Henry, Orton, and Scott Steiner) in a great match that Meltzer gave 4.25 stars. This match has been praised over the years for HBK's great babyface performance with him being the last member of his team in the match:

13 years ago tonight on RAW at MSG (11/16/09); DX took on Cena and Taker AND Chris Jericho and Big Show in Tag Team action. This Youtube video of this match has 118 million views (posted below). WOW!:

November 17, 1997:

Overview: We are one week removed from the Montreal Screwjob and full-force into the Shawn/Shamrock build. Triple H is in the middle of a feud with Sgt. Slaughter. WWF is in full transition into the Attitude Era now.

Review: DX comes out to the ring to cut a promo. Shawn says what Shamrock did last was not beat Shawn Michaels. It wasn't a sanctioned match. He says that DX respects nobody. Shawn says that he ran Bret out of the WWF and he's beaten every single member of his family and there's only one thing left for Shawn to do and that is to start beating the hell out of Bret's friends and that's what he's gonna do:

HHH calls Sgt. Slaughter out to the ring. Out comes Sarge...

HHH says DX makes the rules, not Slaughter. He says Sarge's wife isn't too thrilled with his privates and Shawn makes the small dick finger sign. HHH says Sgt. Slaugher can't get past half-mast and he'll take a swing by his house and show her what 'standing at attention is all about.:

He slaps HHH, then DX attacks Slaughter. Segments with HHH pedigreeing Slaughter.

Analysis: Not much in build for Shawn/Shamrock tonight. But the promo and beatdown on Slaughter was fun. This honestly just felt like a bit of a filler episode.

26 years ago tonight at Survivor Series 1996; at MSG Shawn lost his first World Title in a match against Sid that Meltzer gave 3.75 stars:

20 years ago tonight at Survivor Series 2002 at MSG; Shawn won the WHC in the first Elimination Chamber Match of all time. Meltzer gave the match 4.25 stars:
