Waltman was a firsthand witness to the over-expansion of the NWO, and he learned from that experience. He recalled a situation in WWE when head writer Vince Russo wanted to add Val Venis into DX, yet the group steadfastly refused.

“Russo wanted to put Val Venis in DX, but we said no,” said Waltman. “We stuck to our guns because he wasn’t right for DX. So, for Bullet Club, if New Japan or Ring of Honor wants Bullet Club to do something they don’t want to do, Bullet Club needs to remember this is their creation and their baby. Stick to your guns. If you feel like someone is not right, then don’t let it be done.”
So, could Val have fit in with the group? I could see it going either way. On paper it makes a kind of sense, but the Val character was at times so much of a character I don't know if he could interact with the group well unless they tweaked it some.

You could make good arguments for both sides, I'm mixed on which way I'd go myself. There are parts of Val's character that I could see meshing with DX, both were controversial, edgy and fun characters that we loved.

In the end though, Val and DX were perfect on their own, so they didn't need each other.

But the thought of Val in DX makes for an interesting thought and discussion and X-Pac is right about the whole over expansion thing.

We have the value of hindsight to see that DX was fine without him. I mean I look at DX now and think it was a great faction anyway. It's really down to the group though, so it's whatever they think that counts. If they didn't want him, then they didn't want him.

Even as a kid, I remember seeing the similarities between Val Venis' gimmick and that of DX's. I think he may have worked in it. The only argument I could see against having Venis in DX is that the group may have begun to over-expand, and, thus, start to lose heat.

I think it would have worked. Remember besides the fact his character was what it was the guy was thought of as being a possible low level main eventer. Could have created a DX scenario of Trips as champ, Xpac as lightweight champ, NAO as tag champs and Val as IC champ.

*European.

Though X-Pac was good and popular enough to hold the IC Title aswell. Venis has also gone after the European Title but has never held it.

WHEN did they want to add him to DX? Shortly after Val debuted it would've been completely unnecessary because Val was massively over doing his pornstar shtick, and they just spent weeks of vignettes establishing his character.

In early 1999 perhaps? Sure, the gimmick was starting to lose steam and it would've been a more natural chararter transition than RTS later in his career. He could've filled the gap that HHH left once he turned heel on X-Pac, granted that fans would've taken to him in that role.

the character of val venis didnt really work unless he was the center of attention

no way he was ever going to be the center of attention in DX

Things worked out for DX but Val could have been fun in the group. I would have booked him like a mascot and weak link allowing him to take pins so DX was not unbeatable while keeping other guys winning. It would have been interesting watching him interact with Chyna leading to maybe jealousy in the group.

I don't think it would've worked.

Somebody would have to take the backseat and given what the premise of all those characters were, it would've lessened their impact.

That being said, if you told me back then it was going to happen, I would've been all for it.

Not a chance. Val was his own character and at the time DX was a bunch of characters with chemistry. Niether DX member really had their own niche then so as a group was a good way to get them all over.
Definitely agree with the bold.

The lack of chemistry would probably have hurt DX & Val.

Val just feels a little to over the top for DX. While there was certainly a sexualized element of DX and even with their gesture and catchphrase that wasn't all that their characters were. It's all Val was. The only place I could see him fitting in is being the guy they somehow kayfabe got stuck with and rolled their eyes at a lot. Which would have hurt Val a lot. Could have ran an angle where he gets fed up but it's not like he would have went over HHH so I am in agreement that he wasn't a good fit.
