Man rewatching the attitude era from 1999. Man they had such an underrated feud. Their matches were really underrated as well. Mick Doesent get the credit he deserves for getting Rock main event ready. My favorite of theirs is actually their Empty Arena Match on Heat

Rock's rise and his feud with Mankind doesn't get the credit it deserves for raising ratings and buyrates through the roof and basically putting an insurmountable amount of distance between WWF and WCW. WCW had temporarily taken the lead back from WWF in the Summer of 1998, and even in early 1999 they were doing huge ratings on Nitro and did a massive buyrate for Superbrawl. It's just that Rock getting over and his hot feud with Mankind took WWF to another level.

It doesn't? Pretty much every story on it that I have seen acknowledges it as the moment the tide shifted for the final time with WCW counterprogramming the Fingerpoke of Doom to less than favorable reception.

Most of the time people just attribute Austin winning the belt at WM 14 and his feud with McMahon as the sole reason why the WWF won the Monday Night Wars.
Which seems particularly weird given that RAW hadn't even broke Nitro's winning streak in the ratings until AFTER Austin won that match.

I've even seen it suggested that Rock piggybacked off Austin's popularity in his 2000 run with Austin hurt and that he just rode the wave.
If anything, I would call it more akin to what happened with Goldberg during the N.W.O. run. He was a new breakout star that came into his own once WWF was getting their footing back.

The narrative that Rock became a megastar after WCW was already in decline is a fairly common narrative that has no basis in reality.
To me becoming a megastar is becoming a megastar. What connection there is or was to WCW's decline feels irrelevant. If he's hosting SNL, starring in movies, selling T-shirts and merch, and doing book deals, he's made it. There are circumstances like timing and atmosphere that play a role in nearly every accension to superstardom.
