When did this whole thing start? I was a lot younger in the late 90s but I don't remember this always being a thing.

I have no idea but apparently when you lose a title that you've held for an exponentially long amount of time, you are entitled to a rematch at any point you cash in the clause.

No, it's literally just whenever you lose a title now.

I'm pretty sure I remember it going all the way back to 2006 at least.

It's just lazy ass writing. In the AE, that very, very rarely happened. Now since they have nowhere to go with storylines with the 45 writers, they just do that to fill time in the short term. They need to think more long term imo.

Well in today's era all athletes have a contract and they have all these special demands which for wrestlers I guess include a rematch clause

What about the Rock's WWE Title rematch he never got? Is there a time limit? If not I can see him getting his rematch when he comes back despite it being three years since WM29.
