Qatar World Cup Construction Has 1,200 Already Dead

The FIFA Executive Committee voted in Zurich on December 2, 2010 to award Qatar the hosting privileges of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad Al-Thani, chairman of the Qatar bid, thanked FIFA for the opportunity and promised that they make FIFA proud and not let them down. In the time that has elapsed since the successful bid for the 2022 World Cup hosting privileges, however, at least 1,200 construction workers have already been found dead. According to the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) if the trend continues, more than 4,000 workers will have died before the Qatar World Cup 2022 takes place.

For comparison, the construction for the 2014 World Cup being hosted in Brazil this summer ended with only six workers dead. Sochi, Russia’s resort city and host of the 2018 World Cup has had 60 deaths due to construction done for that event. The report from the ITUC indicates that the 1,200 workers dead are migrant workers from Nepal and India. The figures reported from both the Nepalese embassy and the Indian embassy support the figures from the ITUC statement.

Workers on the construction site have told reporters that they have been treated like animals. They indicate that they must live like livestock in a stable under squalid conditions and that they are routinely denied payment for work. In additional to the withheld pay, the employees have told of being denied rest and food during labor in 122 degree heat. There have been reports that their passports have been confiscated to ensure the migrant laborers do not leave Qatar. The Qatar World Cup construction situation which already has 1,200 workers dead has been referred to as modern day slavery.

The fact that Qatar won the bid over Japan, South Korea, U.S., and Australia is a joke. All four of those countries are better footballing countries than Qatar. No way people actually voted for it.

Two of the world's most corrupt countries hosting the world cup in the future.

There is a club in Qatar named Al-Sadd won the Asian Cup and was in 3rd place behind Santos and Barcelona in the World club. Don't judge you never watched them play. Lol how the hell is Qatar corrupted, it's the safest country and they have the nicest people there, that's based on my experience, it's a beautiful place. I lived there for awhile.

Yeh but as a country they have never made it near a world cup

Club performance doesn't justify the entire country hosting a world cup.

And if that were a factor, Japan or SK should probably host because they have had the most successful clubs in the Asian cup.

And not to mention it has to be held in the winter.

Only decent thing about this is the stadiums look kind of cool.

Qatar's labour laws are shocking to be honest, they really do need to be looked into. However, those who have the power to look into it don't really care enough to take a stance and make a change.

Seriously give them a chance. I have seen almost all the projects they are planning for and it's very cool and no I'm not just talking about stadiums. I think it's gonna be a very successful host.

But then again what did the US do to host the 94. Or recently south Africa.

To me it's accurate. I don't know who wasn't nice to you but I don't think he's qatari because I had friends in high school and I have been around quite enough to know that. But anyways I think it's the safest place.

Again they might not have the best football but they are not far behind the Japs, SK and AU. They are just as good in recent years especially after Al-Sadd winning and getting the 3rd place in WC. Maybe they didn't qualify to the World cup ever before but they are in a good place for the Brazil world cup by just checking their current place.

Uhmm. What? You knowing a bunch of nice Qataris is fine, but realize that there's assholes and nice people from every country. Guess I was just unlucky to know a bunch of assholes who happened to be Qatari. You're right that Qatar is a safe place though, most Khalijee countries are mostly safe anyway and I should know because I used to live there so I know what you're talking about.

Qatar is the SAFEST place? With all due respect to Qatar they are a developing nation and it's always a lot more risky to go there then it is a developed nation. I don't doubt it's somewhat safe but I think I'd rather go to a first world nation if safety was a big thing for me.

In regards to saying Qatar isn't far behind Australia, Japan and South Korea I'm not sure how true that is. Australia has a lot of their national team playing in Europe as do the Japanese and South Koreans. Qatar has players all from the Qatar local league and here in Australia they are viewed as a team we should beat every time we play them.
