There was still a certain segment of fans cheering him as a heel no matter what he did to get heat, and I guess the casuals/kids missed him when he took time off, so WWE just started writing him as a face.

Same goes with all the heel and face unexplained turns

Well it wasn't one minute. There was that month and a half gap of Undertaker induced mental breakdown which saw him feel everything he had done as part of his heel turn was all for nothing and just left him tired and hurt.

I'm not saying they didn't handle it poorly, but his departure sort of made a face turn make vague sense.

Makes no sense really, like he said while feuding with The Rock early this year that he just played the fans (while being face) and insulting them telling them how stupid they were to fall for it and now he's the way he was before all that again? Definitely sounds like WWE logic.

That's wrestling bro. His face turn was about as natural as it could have been after his monster heel title run in 2012. Instead of him doing a complete 180 like Del Rio, with his forced peoples champion schtick, he feuded with someone the marks disliked even more than him during his heel days in Paul Heyman. Naturally making him the "hero" of the story. The fact that a large percentage of the crowd already loved him before anyway helped too.

He told Paul Heyman to not go to the ring with him.

Unbelievable. The second biggest face of the last 7 or 8 years up to that point, and the way they turn him is to tell Heyman to give him some space. Face and heel turns don't exist anymore and it's really sad. They just think that because it's fake, they don't need to turn anyone because the people will just think "Ok, Vince has decided he's a face now, so everything that's been happening for the last year doesn't matter". I still find it stupefying that neither Vince, nor Stephanie, nor Triple H ever ONCE thought "why would Daniel Bryan, the top babyface in the company be dating a colossal bitch like Brie Bella?" No explanation, no turn, no nothing. Just "TOTAL DIVAS HERP DERP". "Goddamn, they're together on reality tv so they have to be on our show too, with no explanation!" Nevermind the fact that the audiences are completely different and Total Divas does about 20% what Raw's audience does. Imagine if any other tv show just did that. Imagine if Charlie and The Waitress or Deb and Dexter were just together randomly with NO REASON given because they were married on a reality show.

If they ever turn John Cena, it's going to be amazing to see how badly they drop the ball.

His turn heel was much more stupid.

He was pushed like the biggest babyface in years and then of nowhere the people was supposed to boo him just because he attack the rock.

I mean, is not like The Rock and Punk are the best friends ever.

He attacked whilst dressed as a druid and poured an urn onto Undertaker a week before Wrestlemania and he was still getting cheered, Punk will get cheered now, whether he's face or heel. He's popular.

That doesn't excuse not having an explanation for why he turned.

Imagine if competent tv shows did that. "Walter White's getting cheered too much, let's abruptly turn him babyface". You would NEVER see something so stupid on a regular show. Shit like this is why wrestling isn't popular now.

Yeah, another one of their mindless turns in recent memory. Aside from him getting cheered, they desperately wanted to have Punk vs Brock at SummerSlam so they hotshotted the face turn and had no explanation for it. It makes no sense that he spent a whole year complaining about the fans and trash talking them, then he suddenly comes back and being all pandering and nice. Even Del Rio's face and heel turns this year have had more explanation to them.

I suppose if WWE applied logic to heel/face turns, there wouldn't be any heel/face turns. The wrestlers who are heels, stay heels and the wrestlers who are faces stay faces. But it's just the way the business is.
