AEW World Champion MJF has provided an update on his status ahead of his AEW contract expiring.

During MJF’s heel run, the star would often talk about the ‘bidding war of 2024’, arguing that he’d have numerous companies interested in him ahead of his AEW deal expiring in January 2024.

While MJF hasn’t talked about his plans for this bidding war much over the last few months, we’re less than two weeks away from January 1.

Speaking on the SI Media podcast, MJF stated that he hasn’t yet signed a new deal with AEW.

Admitting that he wants to stay with AEW, MJF said:

“I’ve been saying the same thing (about my contract expiration date). I never lied. January 1st, 2024.

“When stuff like that gets leaked out, it makes me laugh because I remember something leaked out about Cody (Rhodes) having secretly re-signed and then he showed up (in WWE). Something got leaked out about, you know, CM Punk and Tony Khan or you know…

“I think fans leak out things that they want to be true. I love AEW, I wanna stay in AEW. After this pay-per-view (Worlds End), it’s time to assess the situation for a professional setting. So… not yet (I haven’t re-signed).

MJF is set to defend his AEW World Championship against Samoa Joe at the upcoming Worlds End pay-per-view.

AEW Worlds End will emanate from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on December 30, just days before MJF’s current contract ends.

Nick Hausman posted one of his conveniently timed exclusives on the back of this report (WWE higher-up source said 'storyline') to him. Personally I think he signed an extension in 2022, but who knows.

SI asked MJF about if his character would work in PG land. And is it just me, or does he sound like he has a lisp in this video?

I guess we'll know more for sure after the title match. If he drops it, it'd definitely look pretty bad for AEW if they were working hard to retain MJF. Unless Khan is expecting to work with MJF on a handshake verbal agreement like he apparently did with Moxley at one point.

For sure. It isn't even close. It would be a bigger loss than Cody. Much bigger than the Elite. He is the face of AEW, he is their "homegrown" star (yes I know he was in MLW but 99% of the fans first met him as Cody's sidekick).

Losing MJF is the kill shot that AEW has to avoid. There is no replacement. There is no next star up. He defines AEW. Catastropic is the exact right word.

I'll just laugh if he actually does walk out on 1st January. It'll be the end of AEW as anything even remotely worth watching and attendances and ratings will dwindle further. It would be absolutely catastrophic and anyone who denies that is a deluded fool.

Every chance he's already re-signed and it's all part of the story, but if not then AEW seriously may as well just fold.

It would be supremely dumb of him to say he was re-signed a few days before a title match on PPV two days before said expiration date.

And supremely dumb of Tony to have gone this hard with him as a babyface if he is not.

If he'd been a heel, that would be different. We could have been in the midst of some serious Summer of Punk-esque fun.

Tony Khan already did it before with Jon Moxley.

To start off the show, Paquette brought up the now-deleted Instagram story from CM Punk, in which he claimed Jon Moxley said he would not lose to him at one point in their program. Moxley stressed that he does not want to be dragged into anything. He said for the entire summer of 2022, he was not under contract to AEW.

Mox was the AEW World Champion at the time and said he could have walked into WWE SummerSlam if he wanted to. He added that no one knew about his situation because he keeps his business to himself. He was enjoying what he had been doing with Bryan Danielson and William Regal, but couldn’t predict how he’d feel in six months let alone in a few years coming out of rehab. His contract had been extended for the time he missed.

Speaking about CM Punk, Moxley said he had a conversation with him at the ‘Quake by the Lake’ edition of Dynamite. Mox reiterated that he was not under contract and did not have to be there. He feels he bent over backwards for both Punk and Tony Khan.

Not saying MJF's situation is the same but this is hardly breaking new ground with how Tony Khan has operated in the past.

If he signed a contract extension, then he’s saying this to play up to his character since he made the 2024 bid war an integral part of his character.

If he didn’t sign an extension, then this is incredibly unprofessional and puts the company in an even bigger bad light.

MJF could go ahead and sign with WWE, but he’ll have to humble himself and not be delusional enough to think he’ll be the main event player. There’s a pecking order in WWE unlike in AEW. WWE’s roster is stacked and there many guys on the top who are over. He’ll have to wait his time there.

It’s not even the right time for a jump. Where does he even fit if he goes over to WWE next month? The main event scene is consumed with Roman, Cody, Seth, Punk, Drew, Orton, Knight, Jey, Zayn, Priest, Styles, etc. The mid card is pretty solid right now. Anything else and he just doesn’t fit in.

It makes a lot more sense to continue being the guy in AEW for a couple more years, and then make that jump next time in your prime years where there will likely be more space than there is now.

If short-term booking is what he cares about, sure. AEW will book him way better in the first half of 2024. There's never a bad time to jump to the WWE if you have ambitions beyond wrestling though. Especially if AEW tries to get him to commit to 3-5 more years. Since Khan has largely rejected releasing people [Outside of Punk[, contract negotiations are just about the only time the wrestler will have leverage on pursuing their ambitions. Unless MJF wants to eventually make Tony Khan fear for his life by taking several aggressive steps in his general direction.

Bro he walks in a top 4 guy in that company, don't be delusional.
Based on what? Dudes not a draw (at least not atm) and won't be known to many WWE fans. AJ Styles didn't walk into WWE as a top 4 guy and far more WWE fans watched TNA than AEW.

AEW fans are brand loyal. You could replace MJF with Marko Stunt as champion and same 800k would tune in each week

The face of AEW is Tony Khan anyway not MJF. The company is built in Khans image.

Yup, been saying this for a while too. Outside of CM Punk off and on, no one gets more media notoriety than Khan in AEW. I remember early on when he said he wanted to largely remain off-screen too.

You said the same thing about CM Punk and the backstage drama with the Elite being a work. Kinda hard to claim anything is obvious in AEW anymore when Khan has demonstrated incompetency. This wouldn't even be the first time he has had his top guy [At the time] on the program without a contract if MJF continues to be champion in 2024 with no extension.

I'm assuming he's already signed an extension with AEW, but even if he hasn't, this would be a terrible time for MJF to switch teams. WWE just got Randy Orton and CM Punk back into the mix, and the picture is looking very crowded for WrestleMania. MJF would be, if not an afterthought, not nearly as big a deal as he probably should be if he jumped now. If I were him, I would bilk Tony Khan for a massive one-year contract and jump over after that.

Because he wants to actually be relevant and successful?

I guess that's too much to hope for.
