Money in the Bank Review
* Women's MITB match I thought was good work wise but not one of the best they've done and a step down from last year's. Unfortunately some of the spots they attempted fell flat like the one trapping Rhea with the ladder which just didn't want to co-operate. Best spot easily was the devil's kiss on to the ladder from Stephanie to Rhea. Honestly that move is easily one of the most over in the entire wrestling industry let alone WWE. Best performers in the match I thought were Rhea, Roxy and Stephanie. They had both Stephanie and Guilia come close to winning at times which is a good sign for their futures. Especially Guilia who I think needed the stronger booking out of the two coming into this match.
Let's talk about the finish....the finish itself regardless of the winner felt very flat, there was no real excitement or build to the finish and the knock off spot to Alexa and Rhea felt telegraphed. The winner....my god, this has to be up there as one of the top three worst MITB women's winners along with Nikki ASH. It's that level of bad and it's even worse because of who is in this match. You have the top three prospects who have come from NXT in Guilia, Roxy and Stephanie. You have a beloved veteran whose come back in Alexa who is still one of the best promo girls in the business as well as without a doubt the biggest women's star in the wrestling industry and arguably the best worker in Rhea. So who do you choose? This cunt:
The amount this nepo bitch gets because of who she is fucking and which family she married into is unreal. 0 talent who years ago took a giant shit on the company with Mercedes Mone. Yet SHE of ALL PEOPLE gets the briefcase? WHY?! Scratch top 3, this is the WOAT Women's MITB winner. At least Nikki was saddled with a crap gimmick. This is inexcusable.
And the worst part? Not even the worst booking decision of the night when you consider all the context of storylines. Fuck me sideways.
* Dom vs Octagon Jr. was okay for what it was. Just a showcase for a AAA guy and for Dom to get a title defence. It was a TV ass match, not much more to say.
* Becky vs Lyra was exactly what it needed to be work wise and as I predicted was the match of the night. This was a really great physical fight of a match, a lot more aggressive and urgent. Both women really wanted to kill the other, particularly Lyra was a lot more aggressive. A lot fantastic sequences, counters, holds and near falls. The best near finish however was the fake out double count out spot. I really bought into the fact they might end this with a double count out to get round the wager. It would have been a lame ending but for a false finish they executed this perfectly. I loved Becky's facial expressions throughout the match which told a great story in of itself. Surprised that Becky got the win here considering the stipulation with her taking the shortcut. I wasn't sure whether it was the right decision until the post match angle. I think they just about did enough of a balancing act between Becky being a bitch and milking in the stipulation and Lyra begrudgingly going along with it and until she had enough and attacked Becky afterwards. One small gripe I have is I feel as though Lyra could have gone further with the beatdown and really drove that anger and frustration home. But overall I loved this. We need the blow off at Evolution or Summerslam, I want Lyra/Becky III (IV if you count NXT).
* The Men's MITB work wise was easily the better of the two MITB matches yet somehow was also the worst booked out of the two with a Naomi win. How did they achieve this? All around the story of the Seth faction, how key wrestlers who should have been there did not show up to even the odds and how one wrestler got not only screwed over for the third MITB in a row but got buried in the process. Yes, I said buried. And I don't say this lightly.
I could go on about the match and certain spots like the El Grande Americano stuff with PENTA and Knight but I want to talk specifically about the finish starting with the inevitable interence from Bron and Bronson. Fine, they come in and look like monsters and take all the babyfaces out and are encouraging Rollins to go for the briefcase. They don't even wait for Rollins to be in a position to look like he's about win the match before they hit Jacob Fatu's music and out comes him and JC Mateo. Okay, small detail that I thought was a mistake but it makes sense for them to come out considering the teasing tension between both groups on SD. They attack Bron and Bronson and take them out and it looks like Fatu is going to help Solo win the briefcase. We all know he's not going to and eventually he turns on him and powerbombs him through the ladder. Up to this point I thought this was cool. Jacob gets a great moment turning babyface, Solo is protected in losing and it moves the story forward. Maybe it was a little soon but I think personally that's a nitpick, all good.
But then this is where it gets all time bad. Rollins comes back in the ring and is looking like he's going to win until LA Knight intercepts. Surely Knight gets the upper hand right? Nope. Bron and Bronson are going to interfere again and overwhelm Knight right? Nope. Then surely Punk and Sami come out to even the odds to allow a babyface to win the match after weeks of Rollins group dominating the babyfaces who were in or could have been in this match right? NO. What do they do? They have Rollins legitimately get the better of Knight, stomp his ass and then climb up to grab the briefcase himself. So just to recap:
1) Rollins wins the briefcase himself, Bron and Bronson aren't even involved in the finish rendering their involvement pointless. This buries all the babyfaces in this match, most of whom who were down FOREVER when they should have gotten back up by then.
2) Punk and Sami don't even come out to get a piece of Bron and Bronson when they are the key opponents to Rollins faction so you just buried the storyline around opposing this new big bad group who is supposedly taking over Raw.
3) Worst of all, you have LA Knight in a hope spot that is designed to bury him completely by making Seth, the supposed dastardly heel look legitimately better than him and he didn't need his big hosses to take out Knight despite the whole point of the fucking story being that Seth should win due to overwhelming odds. Instead he wins by himself, subsequently burying Knight and burying the entire point of the story.
Worst booking decision of the year BY A COUNTRY FUCKING MILE. FUCKING TRASH GOD AWFUL.
* The Main Event between Cody, Jey, Cena and Logan was fun for what it was. It was never going to be a 5 star classic as far as work is concerned but it didn't need to be. The crowd were into it, they picked up the pace when they needed to and did just enough to keep the crowd engaged to the finish. Logan was the standout in this match and his springboard moonsault to the announcer's table was an absolutely insane spot. I have to admit, i really enjoyed the finish with Truth's return setting up Cody to pin Cena for the win. I did notice a little nod to R-Truth with LA Knight's entrance and what Truth has called Knight before so I thought something was up for them to acknowledge it but I didn't see that coming. Very happy for him as he got the biggest pop of his life and it's a great way to reinsert him back into the mix continuing on from SNME. Didn't expect Cena to take the pin here but pleasantly surprised he did instead of Logan. Good ending to the show.
Overall work wise, this wasn't a bad show and in fact both the women's IC title match and Men's MITB delivered in ring wise but this had some of the worst booking of the year with both MITB matches. This has to be up there as one of if not the worst PLE of the year so far because of that.
