When i think of the greatest mic workers of all time, the same names always come to mind, Jack Roberts, Vince Mcmahon and Mick Foley, those three names are three of the greatest of all time when it comes to cutting a promo .now in this thread i'm going to make my case for Mick Foley to be the greatest of all time.

To really see the best of Mick Foleys promos you have to go back to ECW when he was playing the Cactus Jack gimmick, back in ECW Mick's promos where so intense and could make you believe everything he was saying in his promos was true, he could pull you into his story and his gimmick like it was real life and for a split second makes you forget that wrestling isn't real, and this is all a gimmick that Mick Foley is playing, no one else has ever made me believe that its real like Mick did.

Mick's promos wasn't just about what he said, but how he said it and the body language that he used. the best way to see this is to watch the Cane Dewey promo from ecw, you can see the lack of eye contact that Mick uses here and the tone off his voice changing word to word, its psychology that you just don't see from anyone else.

I believe that no man in the wrestling business has the ability to make you believe every word he says is true like Mick Foley did and thats what makes a great mic worker, its not about getting pops from what you say, a good promo should make you believe every word being said is true like Mick Foley did back in ECW, and that is what makes him the greatest of all time.

It is really difficult to play a gimmick, but it's more difficult to play more gimmicks, that's why I think he was one of the best
Exactly right. He did three different characters with three different styles regarding mike work. He had substance in his promo work & told a story in his promos getting across his message. He wasn't all catch phrases & insults.

Ain't nobody better at promos than Foley. Legit GOAT in that department with only a small, SMALL amount of people coming even close (Jake Roberts, Arn Anderson). His Anti-Hardcore/Cane Dewey promos are without a doubt in my opinion THE greatest promos of all time as well. Love the promo he did on Funk and Dreamer at the WWE Vs ECW special back in 06 too, the barbie promo during the Orton feud, and the one a couple of weeks after WM 14 when he stopped being Cactus Jack after the fans chanted Austin's name while he and Funk were stretchered out from beating destroyed inside a cage by DX.

He just knew exactly how to put his emotions across. Every promo felt real. I loved the building from quiet to shouting promos he pulled off, like the one he cut on Terry Funk before One Night Stand in '06. Jake Roberts promos would never come across the way they did back then, today. His promos relied on the gentle, quiet speeches which hushed the audience. He would have been ruined by "What?" chants and all that crap today. Foley didn't have that same kind of commanding presence, but he poured his heart out everytime he had the mic and the audience felt that. That's why he's the GOAT on the mic.

Mick Foley is one of the best ever on the mic. He does some great work. His mic skills have always helped him in such a long way if you ask me. Together with his mic skills and connection with the fans and basic in ring style and heart he became one of the biggest stars ever

This thread is so full of righteousness. Nobody made me look forward to a promo/interview more than Foley. He could do psychotic, angry, funny, sad...such a myriad of emotions that he could fit when the situation demanded it. It has to be stated that it wasn't just the words that he said that gripped you, but the way he said them. Speaking in a calm, eerie tone one second, then just exploding into a fit of rage the next, sometimes with the odd high-pitched squeak emitting from his throat. A true fucking master of his craft and one that many of the talents of today should study from.

He's certainly up there for me. This is part of the reason why I'm excited for Dean Ambrose debut, as I see a bit of Mick Foley in him.
Mick Foley was always so special on the mic. Really such a legend and very special star

Funny you mention this promo, as I just watched it today (going from mid-96 on). It's April 6th, 1998. Great promo, he really was able to show the fans their disrespectful nature in amazing ways.

I was going to upload it, but it's already on youtube:

Foley also had such a connection with the fans and it's that connection that turned him into a mega star

Nobody is a better mic worker than The Rock and Mick Foley himself said it and will tell you it. With that said, Foley is one of the greatest of all time and was unbelievable in delivering emotion in his promos. Give 99% of the wrestlers his material and promo style and it becomes almost goofy/comedy, but Mick was able to captivate you like no other in that aspect, from his sitting to his facial expressions, to the tone voice changing on the spot, you knew you're watching a guy who knows exactly what he's doing. And you gotta give big credit for his comedy side because he was tremendous in it, his work as the goofy Mankind late 98-99 is one of the best you will ever see. Truly one of the most talented guys ever in this business.

Lol at the claim that Foley is the greatest ever....he was pretty damn good, but not best ever. That title will belong to Rocky for a LOOOOOOOOONG time

Also why the fuck do people keep putting Jake Roberts on their lists of best on the Mic? Mother fucker was mediocre at very best
