Former Connecticut Rep. Chris Shays took aim at U.S. Senate frontrunner Linda McMahon and the content of WWE programming several times during an hour-long Republican debate at the University of Connecticut Thursday, saying that the wrestling organization's stories are the real "war on women." At two points, he referred to McMahon's husband, Vince McMahon, making a woman—Trish Stratus—remove her clothing and bark like a dog during a skit.

"I think when you force a woman to take off all her clothes in an arena, and get down on the ground and bark like a dog, I think that's assault on women," said Shays.

"You can't talk about you're a job creator without talking about the jobs you created," he told reporters after the debate, adding how McMahon has no answers to his criticism. Shays also referenced stories of WWE wrestlers who have died young, which have been widely attributed to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. McMahon, however, steered away from his WWE-related criticism to focus on her job plans.

"I'm very proud of the company that I have helped grow, from the point of time when my husband and I shared a desk," said McMahon. "I'm proud of the jobs that I have created here in Connecticut, and I'm proud of the millions of dollars that we have put into the economy here in our state."

"A job creator?" Shays responded. "Hugh Hefner is a job creator. I don't want Hugh Hefner being there, and I don't want Linda McMahon being there."

holy shit it's still real to this guy
Exactly. All Linda needs to do is state the obvious: a depiction of the degradation of a woman is not the same as degrading a woman.

If it were otherwise, the people behind Mad Men would be raked over hot coals.

While what you say is correct, I can't help thinking one of her opponents might bring up the Trish-Mickie feud which descended into borderline porn at times. What would her defence be: "Mickie was only pretending to touch Trish's pussy and then lick her fingers?"

Regardless its not the sort of thing you want on your job-creation resume if you are running for office.

Fair point. Well, she could theroetically easily state the truth, which is that her company's product has changed dramatically since that period of time (and it has, obviously). Having said that, though, she could insist that it was a particularly adult-oriented and boundary-pushing storyline and that while certain aspects of it were probably outré for the sake of being outré, there was also a lot of worthwhile complex themes and ideas embedded throughout that storyline.

All of which would be accurate... But I've noticed that she struggles quite a bit in defending her company, so I'm not expecting anything like that from her.

Most politicians seem to be pathologically inclined to lie and distort rather than tell the whole, unvarnished truth, even when it would help them. Peculiar.

i really hoped someone brought up last week when Vince mocked Jr's bell's palsy
Agreed, Its about time that, the hypocrisy of the "Be A Star" campaign was exposed, how they can Mock a man with a medical condition thats blighted his life, while having a "Be A Star" logo behind them is disgusting. They preach to kids not to bully others and not to name call, but they've been bullying JR on screen to millions for years..they don't practice what they preach.

I think American politics are very mean, gross and ruthless. Here in Europe it would be inconceivable-not talking about Greek neo-nazis- seeing things like Republican accusing Obama of being Muslim and insulting him for that, or bringing another personal issues in campaign like bashing a candidate because the business of her mate.

As long as she loses the election and WWE stops being so "ultra sensitive" to please her campaign, I don't mind any low blows coming from her opponents.
