At WWE Tables, Ladders & Chairs, the WWE Universe will bear witness to a match 11 years in the making.

With not one, but both World Titles hanging in the balance, World Heavyweight Champion John Cena will face WWE Champion Randy Orton in an historic Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match. The watershed contest will leave one Superstar in possession of both World Titles, a feat that has never been accomplished since the World Heavyweight Title was introduced in September 2002.

Simply put, the bout has true game-changing implications.

Per match rules, tables, ladders and chairs will all be legal objects, and to claim victory, one Superstar must climb a ladder and retrieve the titles, which will hang high over the ring. Metaphorically, The Champ and The Viper have spent much of the past decade climbing up opposite sides of the same ladder.

The parallels between the two Superstars — arguably the most dominant competitors to have entered WWE this millennium — run deep. They battled in former WWE developmental league Ohio Valley Wrestling before making their WWE debuts within months of each other in 2002. Both Cena and Orton enjoyed meteoric rises to the top of WWE —journeys that repeatedly brought them into conflict against each other — and now, some 11 years later, they stand as immensely decorated Superstars, boasting a combined 25 World Championship reigns between them.

That’s to say nothing of the underlying debate over which Superstar is the true “face of WWE.” The ambassadorial Cena had been unofficially tagged with that label years prior to The Authority’s public assertion that Orton is, in fact, the chosen representative of WWE.

Such labels will likely fall by the wayside on Sunday, Dec. 15, however, when the most important distinction of all — WWE and World Champion — is determined in what will assuredly be a physical Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match. The Cenation leader has greater experience in the match type, having defeated Edge for the WWE Title in a Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match in September 2006. WWE’s Apex Predator, in contrast, has never competed in such a contest. Nonetheless, his capacity for malice is well documented and never in doubt.

The final pay-per-view of 2013 also happens to be headlined by the biggest match of the year, if not many years. What will happen when longtime enemies John Cena and Randy Orton set out to one-up each other? Just what type of physical punishment can the WWE Universe expect to see when the unforgiving tables, ladders and chairs are brought into action? And, most important of all, who will be left standing with both the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships when the dust settles?

There will be only one way to find out, and that’s by watching WWE Tables, Ladders & Chairs live on pay-per-view Sunday, Dec. 15, at 8 ET/5 PT.
This match is happening sooner than I expected but I am all for there being only one WWE Heavyweight Champion. For years now especially with star power not being as high as it was a decade ago when they introduced the World Heavyweight Championship, I thought there should only be one world champion in the company. One World Champion for the sake of prestige in the top prize these superstars are competing for every month, and for the added importance in the eyes of the fan buying into a fight over the title. Now that is if all of this doesn't end in some type of fuckery in the finish that leaves no holder of both championships which very well could happen knowing this company. Or each man grabs the other man's title belt thus switching championships.

Two things.

1. I hope this isn't WWE doing some bullshit finish, I want a conclusion, someone wins and becomes Undisputed Champion.

2. If this leads to HHH screwing Cena and setting up 'Cena vs HHH' at WrestleMania they can fuck off.

Otherwise im actually really excited about this.

I'm sad that it's these two. Orton and Cena have been running the show since 2004-2005; almost a decade.

We've been waiting for the title unification for so long --- it should have been some other two wrestlers.

Personally I'm not too hyped for this. With only one World Title it means that fewer guys can get to that top tier.

Maybe that's better in the long run. You'll get a stronger overall Title scene but long term, probably a lot of the same 6 guys in the main event which kinda' sucks. Sure, there'll be fewer guys like Sandow or Ziggler in there but balanced out by Cena vs Del Rio, Orton vs Big Show, Cena vs Orton, Cena vs Big Show repetitions every fucking pay per view.

I hope I'm wrong though and by proxy, maybe it'll make the IC and US Titles mean a lot more since there'll be fiercer competition for them. I don't know, just right now I'm not hugely happy for it and am kinda' hoping for a screwey finish like Sandow grabbing the second Title or something and fucking it all up.

Orton wins, defends it at WrestleMania XXX against the winner of the Royal Rumble match, mostly likely to be Daniel Bryan (I hope).

I want Vacant to win. He pushes both superstars off of the ladder causing injury.

That's kind of reason that it should be these 2

I'm definitely excited for this. :mark:

Never seen Orton in any match involving ladders that aren't MITB so it's something new.

It should be a good match, like their Ironman Match back in 2009.

HHH didn't say the titles would be unified. Just that both titles are on the line

Odd PPV and match to decide it. If they had to pick a filler PPV to do it, Night Of Champions seems like a more fitting place.

I was just about to post this. Although i think they will be. If they are, i wonder if they do the Undisputed Championship, or call it WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Either way, we should get rid of the current fuglyness that is the WWE championship

Each grabs a title and it's all settled at the royal rumble in a unification match.

I wouldn't rule out an Orton/Punk match either. Although I think Daniel Bryan is the most likely scenario.

I doubt Bryan/HBK happens as Shawn is already stated numerous times that his last match will be against Taker at WrestleMania 27 but who knows tbh.

1. Why waste the TLC stipulation on this match ?
I don't expect these guys to go balls to the wall so why even tease it.

2. Thank god this isn't headlining WM.

3. Anyone expecting the main event and mid card divisions to get better with only one title is fooling themselves.
We've seen this already with the Womans/Divas titles and WWE/World tag titles.

Agreed. The booking is going to have to coincide with creating a better landscape in the WWE | World Heavyweight Championship scene. They can unify the championships but they should not just leave it there with the same old faces fighting each other over and over again. The stories need to be well-built, engaging, and have an entertaining pay off whether the babyface or heel goes over. After this Orton vs. Cena match/feud we want to see other superstars competing for the true and only TOP prize in the company. WWE actually doing that is another issue that needs to be handled.
