A decision has been made on John Cena’s opponent for WWE WrestleMania 36 and fans may be underwhelmed about plans for Cena’s match.

Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that the current plan is for Cena to take on Elias. This would be a follow-up to Cena’s interaction with Elias at last years’ WrestleMania. As seen in the video below, Cena appeared on the show as the “Dr. of Thuganomics” version of himself when he interrupted Elias’ attempt to play a song.

Meltzer pointed out that Cena vs. Elias is an underwhelming match-up and Elias is currently a babyface. Unless WWE changes their mind on this match, it looks like Elias will be turning heel soon.

Cena is scheduled to appear on the February 28th edition of Friday Night SmackDown so the match will likely be set up on that show. Cena recently said in an interview that he was open to doing something on the show since he had plans to be backstage since he lives in Tampa. Not long after that interview is when the decision was made to get Cena on the 2/28 episode of SmackDown.

Meltzer noted that Goldberg is not scheduled for WrestleMania. The other “special guest” scheduled for WrestleMania is The Undertaker.

I'd rather Cena just stay home then. Nothing against Elias, but he's plateaued and this would be a waste of Cena.

Cena vs Strowman for the IC title, the only championship Cena has never won would make way more sense here.

Or have someone from NXT show up on Smackdown and challenge Cena to a match, like Rhea did with Charlotte.

Balor, Dream, Riddle would be names I would like to see face Cena at WM36.

If you're looking a Raw competitor to challenge him, Aleister Black would make a lot of sense based on his character looking for a fight.

Fuck off with that, I'd rather he just not show up so WM can be a shorter show. WM was shaping up nicely and now WWE wants to add shit stains to the card.

Why not do Cena vs Velveteen Dream? That would be fuckin huge.

Elias isn’t good in the ring and Cena hasn’t wrestled In years therefore the match will be booked as a squash. Which really sucks becuase Elias is a great talent that needs a big win.

With that being said this is actually a great chance to build Elias back up as a top talent if he wins. It will put him over the same way Drew did when he eliminated Lesnar and the same way Wyatt will if he beats Goldberg.

So hopefully if this is true Cena does the right thing for once and puts over Elias clean .

But let’s be real it’s Cena so he will just squash Elias and no show for another year...
