Thinking back to Vengeance 2001. Chris Jericho beats The Rock with his own finisher, the Rock Bottom. Fifteen minutes later, Jericho defeats Austin to gain the WWF title and unify with the at time World Championship.

Albeit those wins were not clear, to me it seemed like having Jericho win those two titles was perhaps one of the most prestigious honors in WWE history. Think of how major it would be for somebody to hold both of those belts now, but back then the WWE felt Jericho was the man who deserved to be the first.

It would seem that the WWE wanted Jericho to become the next mega star, but after his title reign he kinda fell into a mid-carder/upper-card heel.

From what I can see, there was a 6 year gap I believe between his reign as Undisputed Champ and when he won the WHC in 08. He hasn't won the WWE title since 01.

Kinda makes ya wonder what happened... Like I said, and this may just be my opinion, but putting Jericho over the Rock and Austin in the same night has AND winning the two major titles seems like the most prestigious right ever given to a superstar. It would seem to me like the WWE wanted Jericho as their guy because at this point I think it was known that the Rock and Austin would be leaving soon.

But for some reason it never happened, for one reason or another. I mean I guess HHH kinda blew up but I still don't get why they gave Jericho such a huge honor and then took 6 years to put the strap around him again and have yet to put the WWE title around his waist.

Anyways, what do you guys think? As far as Jericho being the first Undisputed Champion and then being left in the cold for so long after. Did Jericho winning the Undisputed Title seem like a huge deal at the time to you guys?

Yeah it was a big deal, but i think he got it just to drop it to Triple H at Wrestlemania.

Well I think Jerchio was the most unlikely out of all to win it that was his first real title reign (besides his first win being reversed against HHH.) Those whole situation of two major titles being combined and going to somebody nobody would expect. It just seems like an epic event to me.

I don't think WWE really wanted to push Chris Jericho as a proper star and he was always just holding the WWE title until Triple H returned from his injury. I've always believed that had Triple H not been injured he would have been the first ever Undisputed champion and gone into WrestleMania 18 as WWE champion rather than Chris Jericho who even after Triple H was a non starter was still second choice as Kurt Angle was going to win originally and Triple H/Kurt Angle was going to be the title match at WrestleMania 18.

Apparently just prior to Vengeance Vince McMahon really believed he was going to sign Sting and was going to do Sting/Kurt Angle at WrestleMania 18 so changed his mind on Kurt Angle winning the title in favour of Chris Jericho but then Sting didn't sign so they did Triple H/Kurt Angle for No Way Out. I think at that time Chris Jericho was probably the weakest booked WWE champion in history and didn't look believable going into The Royal Rumble or No Way Out against The Rock or Stone Cold Steve Austin respectively which was a shame because from mid to late 2001 they had done a great job of building Chris Jericho up.

It was pretty much the same in 2008 when Chris Jericho turned heel as he was built up well and won the World title but as soon as he lost to John Cena at Survivor Series he became an upper mid carder at best again until his brief World title run in 2010. I see Chris Jericho as very much someone in the mould of Tully Blanchard, Scott Hall, Curt Hennig, Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero and Christian in that they are believable in the main event scene when needed but are in reality upper mid carders who make the mid card scene look great and bring prestige to mid card titles.
