In 1995 the WWF wasnt nearly as cemented in America as it is today. It wasnt a strong brand, it was known then as the place Hogan used to be at. Now it is known as the WWE, the place that has had Hogan, Austin, Rock, & Cena. It has been branded over the years.
Point being, in 1995 ECW might have actually thought that it had a shot at catching a WCW or WWF. Now? It would take 10-15 years for TNA to come close to creating the same brand power as WWE.
It will take a visionary to get TNA into that limelight. I think TNA is much more enjoyable to watch than WWE, no question. But to the casual male or female, the brand "WWE" is all that matters in wrestling. When people hear "NBA" they think of the Lakers. When they hear "NFL" they think of the Cowboys. When they hear "MLB" they think of the Yankees. The WWE has created that strong of a brand. When people hear "pro wrestling" they think WWE. Wasnt always like that, especially when WCW was still around. People would have legitimate conversations about how WCW was going to catch the WWF again. People dont give TNA that respect because TNA hasnt earned it.
And since it isnt 1995 anymore, and WWE is such a mainstay in corporate mainstream America, it will take more than a ECW sized promotion to make waves in a genre completely known for Vince McMahons vision.
